Gianluca Lombardi è nato a Taranto il 12 Gennaio 1979. La passione per la fotografia è arrivata seguendo le orme del papà, quando le pellicole venivano ancora sviluppate nella piccola camera oscura arrangiata nell'angolino al piano di sotto. Nonostante sia un fotografo amatoriale, le sue foto sono usate in riviste scientifiche, magazine e libri, e sono presentate a mostre ed esibizioni in Europa e America Latina. Nel 2010 ha ricevuto il titolo di ESO Photo Ambassador dall'ente intergovernamentale per cui ha lavorato sino alla metà del 2014.
Dal 2007 al 2014 Gianluca ha lavorato sulle Ande cilene di Atacama per conto dell'ESO (European Southern Observatory), l'osservatorio dell'Organizzazione Europea per la Ricerca Astronomica nell'Emisfero Australe. Dal 2007 al 2010 è stato responsabile delle esplorazioni nel Deserto di Atacama e del processo di selezione del sito per l'European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), il più grande telescopio del Mondo (40 m di diametro), previsto per il 2022 con un costo di un miliardo di euro.
Dal 2010 al 2014 è stato a carico delle osservazioni con uno dei Very Large Telescopes dell'osservatorio Paranal dell'ESO.
Da Ottobre 2014 a Gennaio 2018 è stato astronomo del Gran Telescopio CANARIAS presso l'Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos a La Palma (Isole Canarie).
Nel 2018 e nel 2019 è stato Adaptive Optics Scientist presso il Gemini Observatory in Cile, facente parte del consorzio AURA (Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy) con sede a Washington DC negli USA.
Dalla fine del 2019 è tornato a lavorare come Adaptive Optics Specialist al Gran Telescopio CANARIAS presso l'Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos a La Palma (Isole Canarie).
