Pros: Handling, sharpness, construction.

Cons: Sometimes autofocus sees us badly.

Opinion: I purchased this used lens and in excellent condition. The use I make of it is exclusively related to bird life and I must say that in general it meets my expectations; The sharpness is very good, although I expected a little more. It is likely that the feeling of non-superb sharpness derives from the fact that I use this lens combined with an APS-C sensor, having a 70d. I wonder if actually on Full Frame the sharpness of this lens can make a real leap forward or if it is sea bass. With regard to autofocus, I found some indecision in poor light conditions (absolutely physiological indecisions for an f/5.6) and also in fine adjustments, for example among the fronds of trees, in which it sometimes shows difficulties in "centering". The slightest focus distance, 8.5 meters, is not a big problem for me. The aforementioned minimum focus distance is "switchable" to 3.5 meters thanks to a selector. Overall positive assessment. Waiting to try the lens on Full Frame. Darius

Pros: Compact and lightweight, affordable cost, sharpness in non-megapixellate FF, construction and robustness.

Cons: AF not very performing in action photo, lack of stabilizer, minimum distance of mf that limits its use

Opinion: I had it for many years and often used it in alternation with more performing optics. Its main skills are handling and the very affordable price. The image is good /excellent especially in FF, it works well also at TA, men suitable for the APSC. The AF is dated, especially in pursuit, even on recent machine bodies. On the other hand, it is a '993 objective' and I do not know that it has ever been updated. For what it costs, I think it's a bargain.

Pros: Not heavy, fast, crisp, cheap, solid colors, easy to use freehand

Cons: A little unbalanced, minimum distance of focus, no stabilizer

Opinion: Rented extraordinarily by rce (from my experience they will probably start the rental and thank them for the trust) I must say that it is a good goal. But you have to understand how where it is with what you use it. Let me explain : arrived yesterday out of curiosity to try it I went immediately to the motorcycle circuit near home... 15 minutes, gloomy sky, on 5dmk3 made me get butterflies in my stomach. Out of 100 freehand shots 14 "wrong" photos (out of focus) but because it was my fault because it went to god at some point I thought I would use it on the fly as if I had my usual 70-200 f4 is. All the other perfect shots! Today, however, I took the field mounting it on 7dmk1... immediately I realized it wasn't the same song as yesterday. At the end of the day on 700 shots on monopod in full only 250 thrown because of me and for, in my word, : on apsc the focal is not 400mm and therefore it is more difficult to be stationary under 1/500 s, the 7dmk1 is a hair slower than the 5dmk3 in continuous fire. Tomorrow and Sunday changing some settings I will try to see if on 7dmk1 I can turn it as on 5dmk3 otherwise I will still buy it but I will use it on 5dmk3 if I have to "run". Anyway I will update the review and my experience to help if it should serve someone. After 3 days of intense use I can confirm that its performance is optimal on FF ... meso on apsc. In fact used on the 7dmk1 stumbles in a "slowness" when the focus lags are little contrasted (I refer only in tracking and not static photos), I improved a little reducing the speed of the chase af from the car but still remains a hair less performing than on FF. In the end I decided to take it, I'm happy and I think it will give me so much satisfaction!

Pros: Light, compact, crisp, af lightning, price, built-in lampshade

Cons: But what con? The lack of tropicalization, perhaps.

Opinion: Purchased not even a month ago by a forum user at a more than reasonable price and in excellent condition. Attached immediately to the 5d Mk III for a few test shots on the sidewalk in front of the house, he immediately exalted me for the handling and balance with respect to the machine (with bg). Back in the house, I saw distinctly the neighbors on the terrace two hundred meters away... I wonder what he can get out of birdlife, if I'm capable of it. Convinced by the positive reviews I found at a hundred euros a kenko multiplier 1.4. Walk to Castiglione della Pescaia, a few photos at the Diaccia Botrona and you go home. In front of the PC the jaw fell on the keyboard : there was Grosseto in the background and stood out very well with an unexpected sharpness. This is the link to the photo: https://www.juzaphoto.com/galleria.php?t=3475083&l=it Conclusion: I paid 600 euros with all the factory kit and a camouflage cover and in conditions close to the new, has an excellent handling, beautiful colors, sharp abbestia, multipliable with little expense. I consider it a valid tool for naturalistic photos and in genres where mm are never enough but without compromise on the level of quality.

Pros: Lightweight, robust, fantastic integrated lampshade, gorgeous optical quality

Cons: For what it costs, nothing

Opinion: It's my favorite lens, the one that's glued to my 5d3 90 percent of the time (and it was also on the previous 30 and 40d). I have to say that I'm "born" with fixed. I started my photographic adventure with an Olympus om1 and an oly 300 4.5, so finding myself in my hands this lens was for me like going back to the origins. Those who are not used to using fixed canvases may find it difficult to find the subject right away. Everyone else can only love this lens. I read criticism scants on the lack of stabilizer, on the diaphragm 5.6 etc... but you forget about its quality relative to the price. I can't afford anything else and I use the 400 5.6 mainly to try to photograph the pack of wolves that I've been following for 15 years. I've always used it with the 1.4 x Canon and on 5d3 the pairing is fantastic, with minimal loss of quality. This year to try to get closer I also bought a 2x, always version II (it's a dated lens, why match a modern TC?) ... I'd done it before! Surprised by the results I also tried the "combo" by joining 1.4/2 and I have to say that the results are not bad at all. But always on 5d3! On apsc the files instead lose heavily in quality! With the 5d3 in live view then you keep the autofocus even with the "combo"... it looks amazing but it is so! Combining even a wireless shot I managed to take beautiful photos of one of the most elusive animals ever, with a final quality of the file that left me stunned! What would I change it with if I had the money? Since the mm is never enough I would change it only for a 500 5.6 IS or for a 400DO... Vote 10 Louis
