Reviews of cameras, lenses, tripods, heads and other accessories written by Nico Lunes

sigma_105_f1-4artSigma 105mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

Pros: This lens gives very unique images. The model comes out extremely sharp and the background is blurred in the most spectacular butter-smooth manner. I absolutely love the distance it gives me to the model outdoor (I shoot many full body length images). Much easier and nicer to communicate with the model than when I use 135mm lens. It is just a PERFECT lens. It is.

Cons: The finish is a bit too glossy / slippery. I would prefer a bit more texture to hold it comfortably in hand.

Opinion: As a portrait lens, I think this is lens is spectacular. I used this lens on a recent Sony (2023) body and it was absolutely the best ever handling experience. I am now using Fuji apsc bodies - but I will move over to Sony / Sigma as soon as I can afford it. I just hope Sigma will make an updated version of this lens - hopefully with an aperture ring (I prefer using a ring on the lens to the camera's command dial for aperture). I did not find the lens too heavy - many photographers say it is. But I actually like the weight as it was - especially that Sony bodies are quite light.

fujifilm_xf56_f1-2wrFujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 R WR

Pros: Everything, except the price.

Cons: The price.

Opinion: I have tried this lens last weekend at a local Fuji event. . The lens performs just great - fast and decisive AF, superbly comfortable to hold (with XT4 body). As for optical tests you can see test online - it is a s good as the earlier 56mm lens = very good. I actually prefer images from this new lens - the bokeh at wide open seems to look nicer and smoother. . BUT the price ... (asking EUR 1100, here) ... is one of the reasons I am selling off all my Fuji gear in 2023 and moving on to another brand, with FF sensor, brighter lenses, at 60-75% of Fuji prices. I already got a new Sigma 85 1.4 for my new kit ... at EUR 850 (sic !!!) . And so good-bye Fuji - no need for a lens that is effectively a f 1.8 lens - and costs 50% more than the other, excellent too, glass !!!

fujifilm_xf30macroFujifilm XF 30mm f/2.8 R LM WR Macro

Pros: It is small and it is light. .

Cons: 1) Very difficult, if possible, to shoot 1:1 with this one - you cannot get that close to an object without the lens and camera making a shade over the object. 2) No OIS of any kind - useless with XT1, XT2, XT3, XT10 / XT100 - XT30 / XT200 3) Priced EUR 600, with identical Panasonic and Olympus lenses priced EUR 300 - and these have OIS !!! .

Opinion: As I am a true pain in the ass I get invited to local Fuji events by the main local camera shop. Last weekend I was given the opportunity to try the 30mm macro lens and the new version of the older 56mm lens. I found the 30mm macro lens a joke - uncomfortably small, and narrowing towards the front with not enough circumference to comfortably hold it (I hold my kit by the lens, not by the camera body). It is great that the lens is small and light - but why is it such an odd, un-ergonomical shape ??? I have no idea. But it just does not work for me (I have mid-size palms). . And the asking is EUR 600 - twice what we would pay here for a stabilized Panasonic lens of the same quality. So again Fuji gives us a so-so lens at a ridiculous price. . As for image quality - you can see tests online, it is OK.

fujifilm_xf33_f1-4wrFujifilm XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR

Pros: Very nice new design of the aperture ring. Very nice and precise MF mechanism. Excellent fast and precise AF.

Cons: Zero character in the images it gives. They all look like images from a compact camera. From my point of view, useless in portrait photography. And I do not like how this lens vignettes either - at wide open the vignette is hard and distinct with very corners rapidly dark. Very unpleasant to look at (images under open sky, e.g.).

Opinion: I borrowed it from a friend for the whole weekend. I do not like the images from this lens at all. They look very homogenous, correct, but completely without a character. As if I were shooting a compact camera. The mechanics are very good, the AF is so much better than on my older 35 1.4. BUT. And it is a great great BUT - the images this lens gives are pretty useless. I will stick to the older lens (35) and wait if maybe Sigma delivers something good in XF mount later this year.

viltrox_af85_f1-8fe_iiViltrox AF 85mm f/1.8 II

Pros: Outstanding clean and elegant finish. Tight assembly. Light (!!!) - it balances very fine on a small Fuji body (XT-2 and XT-1 in my case). Very comfortable to hold. Extremely fast AF. Fantastic ability to find and hold on to eye and face in eye-focus mode. Good close focus on aps-c sensor. Silent. Good price (320 EUR here).

Cons: Small amount of blue fringing in ***extremely*** backlit images - corrected 100% in my software. No problem.

Opinion: After getting my fingers burnt on many Fuji lenses (super expensive but only average image quality) and having browsed sample images of fellow photographers I decided to give Viltrox a chance. So far so good - the lens is super elegant and seems very well made. AF is extremely fast, silent and sure. Eye and face focus work like a dream too. It is very comfortable to hold. Manual focus ring is smooth and precise. This lens is in my opinion 10/10 in aesthetics and mechanical properties. I will report on its optical properties when I have shot first 1000 images with it. By now I only shot a few test shots so I can only say the bokeh on aps-c Fuji body is spectacular - by far the best I have seen from any Fuji lens so far - it is smooth, it is soft and creamy - exactly what I want it to be.

fujifilm_x-s10Fujifilm X-S10

Pros: It does what it is asked to do. It has a deep grip. It has some form of IBIS.

Cons: It feels plasticky in the hand. The IBIS is only so-so effective. It is expesivish (900 Eur locally in Spain, body only, Spring 2021).

Opinion: Tested extensively over a long weekend. It is a good camera. Much nicer to use than the X-A, X-E, and the X-T10/20/30. But it is not as smooth as X-T1/2/3/4. Image quality is OK but not spectacular. Video is OK but not spectacular. I may buy this camera as my 2nd body (I use 2 bodies at once to save time swapping lenses) when my X-T1 dies one day (touch wood). But I do hope some form of X-H2 will appear before then.

fujifilm_56_f1-2Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 R

Pros: Very comfortable to work and hold on X-T body!

Cons: The only way to get impressive soft background is to use the lens at f1.2 ... BUT at f1.2 the lens is not sharp anywhere close to alternative lenses. It is also, just like any other half decent Fuji lenses 2x to 3x times more expensive than equivalent (or better) Canon, Nikon, Sony or Sigma lens !!!

Opinion: Finally I got to try out the lens. We were shooting : me with my X-T2 and 56 1.2 and my friend with Canon 6DII and Canon 85 f1,8. I discovered two things: 1) Fuji lens cannot get truly soft lovely background, unless you work very close to the model. And I was not comfortable being so close to our model, and 2) The lens is comfortable to use - not very big, not very heavy and has a comfortable shape to hold. Then I swapped to Canon (6D) and my friend took my Fuji, and we agree : Fuji is much more comfortable to work with. BUT And it is a huge BUT - Canon 85 f1.8 came out so much better - better color, better sharpness, better background separation. Everything, just everything related to image came so much better with Canon 85 1.8 lens !!! And let alone the Canon lens here costs EUR 300, the Fuji lens costs EUR 900 ... Summary : an OK lens, but way to expensive, way way way too expensive - vs. comparable and better lenses from other brands. So I am not buying this lens, waiting fro maybe Sigma will start making Fuji lenses this year. PS After trying out 7 lenses from Fuji, I only liked 2 of them : The 2.8 16-50mm zoom, and the 23mm f1.4 lens. They are very expensive, but at least they are very good. My next camera, I go back to FF, and I am not looking back at Fuji ever. I do not care their camera bodies are fine, without good and reasonably priced lenses I cannot work.

fujifilm_xf90_f2wrFujifilm XF 90mm f/2 R LM WR

Pros: Gives good image quality. Works VERY WELL in eye priority mode.

Cons: Very heavy lens. No OIS lens. HELLO FUJI !!!!! WAKE UP FUJI ;-))))) Very expensive lens. Very uncomfortable to hold on T1 and T2 bodies.

Opinion: This lens is so bloody HEAVY that it virtually cancels out any APS-C advantages. It has no OIS (again, I work handholding! 90% of the time). To kill it off, it costs nearly EUR 1000 where I live ;-((( Another decent, but not stellar, Fuji lens. I am very disappointed and next will test the 56 1.2 lens that is a bit lighter and a bit less expensive here. But I seriously think of selling all that Fuji garbage and going back to FF bodies. And not for quality but just for so much better choice of lenses and WAY lower prices!

fujifilm_xf16_f2-8Fujifilm XF 16mm f/2.8 R WR

Pros: WR, small size, good build, good AF speed

Cons: distortion, distortion, DISTORTION, dark, dark, dark

Opinion: Have tested the lens and may eventually buy it when Fuji offers a good discount (regular price here is a RIDICULOUS EUR 400 !!!). I can say I like almost everything on this lens. BUT. This lens distortion of RAW files is HUGE - feels like a prehistoric compared to modern Canon, Nikon or Sony lenses! And compared to Fuji 1.4 own lens (which is stellar) this one is absolutely horrible. And when you let the camera correct this HUGE curvature, the corners become useless ... ;-( So, in summary, this lens is useless for landscapes but good for street and general use. I think I will buy it when I get a s/h one or when Fuji discounts it to a more realistic 250-300 EUR.

fujifilm_10-24oisFujifilm XF 10-24mm f/4 R OIS

Pros: - extremely useful range 10-24mm, - small, light, comfortable to hold, - fast and silent AF action, - excellent color, contrast and counter-light quality.

Cons: - VERY VERY expensive compared to same quality Canons and Nikons (EUR 950, in Spain), - NOT weather resistant (!!!!!!!), - no proper aperture ring with marked f-stops, - VERY VERY expensive compared to same quality lenses from competition.

Opinion: I think this is one of the best wide zooms for hobby and amateur aps-c sensor available today. But why is it priced like a pro glass ????? And if it is intended for pro, then why is it not weather resistant. ??????? I am, once more, puzzled by Fuji politiks with lenses. Their bodies are meant for (rich) amateurs and I think they are very good in their niche (I have two Fuji bodies now: T2 and T1, and I am considering selling the T1 and buying H1 to replace it (to get ibis)). But Fuji lenses? Fuji lenses are a joke! When they are good, they are not WR, when they are WR, they are dark, when they are not dark, they are extremely heavy ... And whichever lens you chose, they are two times or more expensive than Nikon and Canon glass. I hate this situation. And Tamron and Sigma do not even bother with Fuji lens mounts .... But, 10-24 is, a bloody expensive - and definitely good quality - lens. It gives, sharp, crisp, dynamic and lively images. YES. If I find a s/h one at a reasonable price, I will buy it.

fujifilm_16-80_f4wrFujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR

Pros: - WR, - 24-120mm range, - aperture ring.

Cons: - never sharp at 16mm (!!!), - heavy, - big, - bloody EXPENSIVE.

Opinion: Tested the lens in a 'try and buy' from a local photo shop. I did not buy it. It was IMPOSSIBLE to get a sharp corner to corner image at 16mm at any aperture. !!! All shots at 16mm had soft corners. ALL. I opened the RAW files and had a look and the answer is obvious - the lens takes barrel shaped images at 16mm - the distortion is so huge that I could not believe it and started reading online for confirmation. The camera corrects this huge barrel distortion but the result is soft and useless corners! I have a 18-55 lens that has horrible OIS and has no WR and so I hoped to get this one to get weather resistance (I often shoot at the sea and at times I do get completely wet with the camera). However, the 18-55 is sharp at 18mm when closed to about f5.6 or f8. In fact I am almost sure 18-55 beats 16-80 at most focal points. And it costs only about EUR 200 (s/h). Another problem is the size and weight - on a XT-2 body this lens feels as heavy as a dslr camera ... And it makes the camera front-heavy. So I returned the lens to the dealer. I can see that somebody else here returned their copy to Amazon too! I will not mention the price (here, in Spain, EUR 900 !). C'mon Fuji - you give us another average lens at ridiculous price! I am considering going back to another brand now that both Nikon and Canon started making mirrorless bodies. Edit 2020 February: Now I have had another, different, sample of this lens for a test. It was, very unfortunately, as bad as the first lens. Mediocre corners, huge distortion at 16mm and pretty useless sharpness at 80mm and full open ;-((((( Price 890 EUR in Spain. Ha ha ha. Fuji is joking maybe. This lens is permanently OFF my shopping list. I am buying a 16-50 2.8 lens now which is stellar in comparison and costs about the same!

nikon_50_f1-8afNikon 50mm f/1.8 AF

Pros: sharp, sharp, sharp, sharp, inexpensive, small, light, relatively well built,

Cons: boring, boring, boring, boring. A 50mm lens, the worst choice for any creative mind maybe.

Opinion: I think it was also one of best ever lenses I owned. It was so much better than that time Olympus Canon and Minolta lenses. Like another planet. The quality / price value was truly outstanding and the images were sharp. Bokeh was only so - so - not smooth and creamy at all (like say a Fuji 35 1.4 bokeh is). But aside from nervous bokeh (which some care and others never need) the lens was a fantastic tool. I would buy it again, maybe.

nikon_300f4_if-edNikon 300mm f/4 AF-IF ED

Pros: ??? Looks cool and can be used as a self defense tool.

Cons: Practically everything: too heavy, too dark, too soft. And too expensive (back then).

Opinion: I had this lense and hardly ever used it. It was too big and heavy to carry around. It was too cumbersome to handle. It was front heavy even with my big bodies and on a heavy Manfrotto tripod with heavy frotto head. I would never buy something like this again. It was ridculously expensive (if we compare to 300mm options available today, also from nikon). We grow making mistakes, mine were many and some were expensive.

olympus_zuiko135autotOlympus E-Zuiko Auto-T 135mm f/3.5

Pros: Small, light, compact, beautiful blur. Extremely finely made in metal and glass.

Cons: I did not have the 2.8 version but I think it is always nice to have this extra 2/2 of a stop of light available (especially on film cameras).

Opinion: I think this was one of the best lenses I ever used. It gave amazing half person portrait images that I still remember today. I think it cost back then (around maybe 1990 or 2000) about 100USD - an amazingly inexpensive lens compared to the prices we pay today for ridiculous lenses from some big brands. In fact I may buy an adapter soon and try the lens with our digital cameras.

nikon_180_f2-8dNikon AF 180mm f/2.8 D ED IF

Pros: Looks cool to impress people who are around you, especially with a big Nikon body like F5 etc.

Cons: Too long too slow and too heavy to be used effectively, unless you have a stabilized body, which I think Nikon does not make!

Opinion: I had this lens in my earlier life of film era photographer. In that era it was already only decent in sharpness. It was actually quite soft close and wide open. Too soft by today's standards. Today it is a nice retro gadget but I would always use a modern sharper lens with OIS (or a body with IBIS, but Nikon has no body stabilisation even today, I think). I would not buy this lens again.

fujifilm_x-t2Fujifilm X-T2

Pros: Very much like X-T1, almost identical. Where it has been changed, the changes are almost all good. It can give good, clean, big image and you can crop this image quite a bit if you need to. (24 mp)

Cons: Ridiculous interface with too many toggles and switches. Too long menu (too many settings). Expensive even now that it is retired (X-T3 is the present model). Fuji lenses are ridiculously expensive and neither Sigma nor Tamron make alternative lenses for X-T2. So if you buy one, you are in for VERY VERY expensive adventures in the lenses shop.

Opinion: Compared to the earlier X-T1 this camera is a move in the right direction. The problem is it is only a small move. If X-T3 is a similar small move, I will not buy X-T3 and go for another brand. The good things are actually good: the image is much better than from X-T1 (which was good but not brilliant) and easily competes with any other top shelf aps-c (small) sensor. In my opinion it also competes with many FF sensors. The camera seems to underexpose by at least 0.5 point, possibly about 1 point. Jpeg files are huge and not easy to downsize for the screen - so the camera is very good choice for those who need big files (e.g. to print big images) but not a good choice for those who always shoot for the web/blog/etc. My impression is that this camera could be used for some kinds of professional work because the image it creates is big, detailed, sharp and very kind to the eye. The big downside of the camera is the stupid Fuji 'retro' interface. But Fuji engineers have never held a real retro camera in hand (e.g. an FM2). So I will keep this camera for a time and see if I can get used to it. I got it with a super duper discount and with a full 2 year warranty. The discount is because new X-T3 is on the market now and there is virtually zero local demand for Fuji cameras.

fujifilm_35mmFujifilm XF 35mm f/1.4 R

Pros: Compact design. Decent materials. Good balance on some bodies (e.g. X-T series). Good looks. APERTURE STOPS ARE LABELLED (unlike some stupid Fuji lenses like 18-55 which have aperture rings ... without stops labelled ... ???)

Cons: Aperture ring too easy to move and lacks a clean sharp 'A' click. Very slow, next to useless "manual" focus. Extremely ugly hood that looks like a Messerschmitt design. It is made of metal so if you hit anything, you can damage the lens, the mount or the body. The hood should be light plastic or hard rubber.

Opinion: The lens is shamelessly expensive. Comparative Canon lens (50 1.8 STM) costs EUR 100 - only 20%, or less, of Fuji lens. It is only a bit justified by Fuji better materials. Sharpness is OK but nothing outstanding (compared to other makes). Colour is +good and distortion seems low (I say seems because Fuji bodies correct distortion on the fly. Blur is OK but not spectacular as the lens is equivalent of FF f 2.1 only. If you want good strong blur, you buy a Sigma 50 ART and a FF body. To sum up - a decent lens, just ridiculously expensive. The 'noises' on my bodies with updated firmwares are still there but they are of no importance - they will not wake up a sleeping child nor disturb a stupid cat. I do not know what the noises are like on old bodies with old firmware but with my bodies they are zero problem. I bought it at EUR 550 only because I could not get it s/h. I think if you can get it s/h at about 200-300 EUR, then it is a good buy. Six months later: my sample is extremely soft - VERY VERY soft - at f 1.4. I am not sure why Fuji made this softness. It may be creative ??? for maybe ??? portraits but otherwise it limits the usable apertures to 2.0 and smaller. Really shame. Still, a recommended lens - if you get it second hand at a good price, maybe EUR 200 or so.

zenit_helios103_53_f1-8Zenit Helios-103 53mm f/1.8

Pros: Good image quality. Low price.

Cons: I think there are no bad sides in this lens. Maybe, maybe, lack of EBC - but if you add coats, you will change the 'taste' of the resulting image.

Opinion: I too had this lens before. On an original Zenith camera (film). Took some thousands of black and white images, all developed and printed by hand. Back then, I would have rated that lens 10/10. Today I think it is 9/10 - because some modern lenses are truly so well corrected for chroma, distortion, vigneting, etc. I do not have one now but a friend is bringing me one to work with my mirrorless camera. I am very glad Nesti mentioned this lens as it is a good choice for creative work with mirrorless cameras.

manfrotto_off_road20l_or_bp_20gyManfrotto zaino Off road 20L (MB OR-BP-20GY)

Pros: Good mesh/back system. Light. Has a raincoat. Has both bottom side load option and top load option.

Cons: Small fittings and flimsy zippers / clips. May not last very long. Not stable, if loaded heavy at the top. No external small pocket (phone, car keys etc). Straps too wide apart tend to slide of my arms (I have relatively broad, muscular arms). Probably nylon only straps (will die in the sun very soon due to UV).

Opinion: I think it is a nice rucksack, mostly well designed. Small and light and cool on the back (+++). The bad thing is its material seems mostly nylon outside (my guess, by touch) and if this is so, it will die very quick in the sun due to UV degradation. This is common for poor quality straps and clips and zippers too. The price, given its apparent Nylon construction, is ridiculous: I think the worth is of max EUR 40 and the remaining EUR 100 you pay for the little red Manfrotto logo. It sure will catch the eye of your clients and stimulate better sales of your images. Unless you are an off road, landscape guy ... I would buy one like this again but I think the price is a rip-off. And if you want a comfortable 20 litre rucksack for your camera then this is the best one I found. Beware - it is NOT big enough for a bigger FF kit. If you have a bigger camera or even two smaller ones and a spare lens and ..., then look towards the bigger 30 litre variety of the same rucksack.

Pros: It can take great images. It comes 'free' if you buy a kit.

Cons: It gets 7.1 rating, which is silly low ... but read on.

Opinion: This is probably the oddest thing I have found on Juzaphoto this far: looking at the images taken with this lens, you will see countless great pictures. Just look thru 'Sample Photos' below! But the lens has only 7.1 rating (sic!), which is as low as you can get. Or there is a mistake in the rating system or the users do not know how good this lens actually is!

canon_powershot_g3Canon PowerShot G3

Pros: Excellent image quality. Excellent build quality. Simple and reliable.

Cons: None.

Opinion: This was our second digital camera. We bought it in 2003 and now in 2018 it still works and gives superb images. Some newer cameras will have better tonal range and I think all cameras now give you more pixels. But how many pixels can you fit on your screen? Mechanically, I dropped this camera at least 3 times - one time from about 1.5 meter onto a concrete floor. Who cares, it still works. I think Canon should give me a new equivalent for client loyalty. The problem is I tested new G1X III and it is nowhere as well made as that old G3. We also have a much newer Nikon P7800 which sometimes gives better images but which is mechanically inferior to Canon G3. We also test now a Fuji mirrorless X-T1 which is a joke compared to Canon when it comes to interface and operability. Bravo Canon.

Pros: Light. Sturdy. Very good image quality. Great LCD screen. Very easy to use. Outstanding macro quality.

Cons: A bit slow. Only 28mm at wide angle. Poor control/button response.

Opinion: This camera is an upgrade to our earlier Canon G3. It is not quite as good as Canon G3 mechanically and the buttons on the back of the camera tend to not record our menu choices when pressed. Image quality is outstanding from such a small sensor. Only in contrasty lights you can see any artefacts, or 'halos'. It is super easy to use, very small and light and very well built. Images from the camera match images from much newer Fuji X-T1 that we also use now (we are testing cameras now, before making a decision for our future needs). I actually think the jpegs are better that those from the Fuji. I hope Nikon will make a new version of this camera soon, just this time I want 24 mm at the wide end and better quality buttons.

fujifilm_18-55oisFujifilm XF 18-55 f/2.8-4R LM OIS

Pros: Decent image quality. Well built. Precise mechanics.

Cons: Aperture stops are not marked. Image Stabilising is mediocre. Not wide enough on the wide end and not long enough on the long end. And too dark at the long end.

Opinion: I have this lens for a test (second hand, about EUR 250, mint condition) and I may keep it until Fuji delivers the 16-80 lens promised for next year. I would not buy this lens new though - as local shops want over EUR 600 for a new one! Way too expensive compared to equal lenses from Canon, Nikon, Sigma, Tamron, etc. Basically lack of aperture marks and price are the disappointments but the quality of the images is good. So if you can get this lens cheap and you do not need aperture stops, then this is good optics. Warning: newer samples are said to be built outside Japan. The one I have is made in Japan.

fujifilm_xt1Fujifilm X-T1

Pros: Inexpensive - second hand, with 18-55 lens, only EUR 500 (2018).

Cons: Battery life only 150-200 shots. Very time consuming to set up and shoot. Kit lens 18-55 useless for any 'close up' work. Impossible to set the camera from full manual to full auto in less than one minute.

Opinion: I bought this camera to step up from our older Nikon P7800 (a compact camera). I could afford an X-T2 but wanted to test something similar from Fuji before spending big money on the camera to use for my future work. After one month shooting these two cameras side by side I still get better images from our Nikon compact. I have seen some great images taken with X-T1 on many websites but now I am sure these images have been very seriously processed. So if you want to spend your life playing with Photoshop, this is the camera to get. I will still keep it and learn more and maybe I will be happier with it in the long run. But I may as well say good bye to Fuji and to any other mirrorless camera. Today top shelf compacts with large sensors are far easier to shoot and give equally good images. Edit late September 2018: After a lot and lot of trial and error - now I can get the camera to outperform much older much cheaper Nikon compact. Image quality is clearly MUCH BETTER than I assumed earlier. It just takes so much time to get used to all the too many dials, switches and buttons. This camera is completely NOT like any real retro camera I used to own (e.g. an Olympus OM-1, among many others.) I also found that the AF system is only good with some newer lenses (like the kit zoom) but it is absolutely abysmal with some R lenses (e.g. 35 1.4R). I am yet to find if this is because of the lens or because of the camera. I will report as I test more. Corresponding lenses are easily 100% more expensive than comparable Canon or Nikon lenses. They are very difficult to re-sell when you upgrade your kit.
