sony_a7r_iiiSony A7r III

Pros: Great files, well built, weight

Cons: All machines have cons, I didn't find any worth mentioning on this one.

Opinion: I have owned it for 2 years in version A, the one with viewfinder, visor and updated USB. Decent travel companion: With the 24-105 G, the 50 2.5G and the voigtlander Heliar 15 I meet 90% of my photographic needs, The battery lasts long enough and the operating speed is sufficient. The menu is not as bad as many describe it, of course, abbreviations are sometimes very imaginative but not impossible. The quality of the files is really excellent, with a very interesting recovery in the shadows for an MPx. The 42MPx are a good compromise between detail, dynamic range and noise. Probably in a few years they will be able to do better, indeed, already today post software allows (almost) miracles, but this device manages very well to have its say and keep up with the times. For the video I don't know, I don't use it. Would I buy it again? Well, if I find a body at an interesting price I would take it immediately, I mount the voigtlander permanently and I'm good to go.

canon_g1xCanon PowerShot G1 X

Pros: File quality, functions, ergonomics, fully articulated LCD.

Cons: Weak battery, sometimes shaky AF, minimum focusing distance.

Opinion: Found as a good opportunity and bought again to be used, given its size, mainly as a motorcycle travel companion. After using its two sisters, the Mk2 and the Mk3 and after switching to the sony100 for compactness, I went back to it: not too small, not too performing and with some defects mainly due to age, but with a reference file quality for the category and that, even today, if used at the right ISO (no more than 1600) gives a lot of satisfaction, more than some current models. The solid construction makes it an excellent travel companion and the 14mpx are not so few, since you get good A3 prints and even decent A2 prints. The limit given by the battery is easily remedied, that of the minimum focusing distance is a little more boring, but I don't pretend to make real macros so I tolerate it. I almost never use burst and video so I don't express myself, while the optical viewfinder, although partially obstructed at the shorter focal lengths, makes life easy in situations of high brightness and the articulated screen allows you to avoid acrobatics in "special" shots. AF is sometimes iffy, like many cameras of its generation, but personally it has never caused me any problems. There are so many functions available and the menus are quite simple to understand. Do I recommend it? Yes, if you find it at the right price and if you understand what you are buying.

sony_fe24-105_f4ossSony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS

Pros: Build quality, sharpness, AF

Cons: Weight

Opinion: Left mounted on the A7rIII(A) it performs very well on almost all occasions, difficult to want more from an f:4 all-rounder. The only limit, for me, is the bulk, which on a body like the aforementioned A7rIII leads to an interference between the fingers of the right hand and the end of the lens, and I have small hands ... This has as a secondary effect a decrease in operating speed, nothing exceptional, but in my opinion it is better to report it. The yield is very good at almost all focal lengths (yields a little to 105) in some cases higher than fixed lenses of the same level. the AF is fast, the F:4 aperture is not so limiting and benefits weight and bulk. For me it is worth all the money it costs.

panasonic_100-300ois_iiPanasonic Lumix G 100-300mm f/4-5.6 II OIS

Pros: In the m4/3 it is a 200-600, for transportability and focal range it is unattainable. Excellent sharpness.

Cons: He accelerated AF so-so. Acceptable, but improvable.

Opinion: Good optics. In birdlife or simply when you need a long optic is a must have in the m4/3 system. Of course there are better solutions (on paper) like the oly 100-400, but what you get is not worth the greater outlay. This objective is a good compromise. I recommend it to anyone who wants to get good results without weighing down the backpack and lightening the wallet too much.

7artisans_7-5fisheye_ii7artisans 7.5mm f/2.8 Fisheye II

Pros: Small and well built, price.

Cons: Snap-free aperture ring, convenient for videos less convenient in photography.

Opinion: For what it costs (it's also found under 100E) it's a great deal. Well built and with good performance (just see the photos in the gallery below) allows you to play with a focal length not too usual without fainting. mine is a fuji-X mount and mounted on the PRO-1 it does very well. Given the focal length there are no difficulties in focusing and even the shake should not be a problem but not having stabilization a minimum of attention is always better to place it.

fujifilm_x_pro2Fujifilm X-Pro2

Pros: Aesthetics, tropicalization, AF, dual slot file quality

Cons: Viewfinder can be improved, battery life, fixed display

Opinion: Also this year touring the photography markets has reserved me some surprises, the best was a PRO-2 300E, with box and accessories. I state that I had been looking for it for a while, but I had always found "opportunities" more for the seller than for me. My purchase is not free from defects (venial) but for the price ... Beautiful to hold and comfortable to use, it differs from the PRO-1 for the greater number of pixels, the times up to 1/8000, the physical ISO ring (although uncomfortable), the AF-L and AE-L split button, the double slot with dedicated door and more. As I already knew, the files produced are excellent and the high ISO (at least up to 8000) really good. For me, who have hands small enough to use, it is libidinous, as well as the PRO-1 and the Pen-F, this shape, combined with the build quality and operating speed, make it an excellent travel companion for any type of photography. The viewfinder is good but not spectacular and the optical one, although beautiful, is often partially "occupied" by the lens so it becomes relatively useless.

olympus_mzuiko12-40proOlympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO

Pros: Sharpness, tropicalization, solidity, hood supplied, rings and keys on the body.

Cons: Light flare in backlight, size and weight on Pen F type bodies

Opinion: Contrary to what I wrote in the cons (allow me the pun) this is the lens that I keep mounted for longer on the Pen F. It is slightly bulky but pays off with a quality difficult to reach by other lenses. The construction is perceptible both to the touch and in the fluidity of the rings and the optical yield allows to obtain images comparable to fixed optics of good level. A good lens that can now be purchased at a reasonable price on the second-hand market; If you find it in good condition, don't miss it!

sigma_dn16_f1-4dcSigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN C

Pros: Sharp enough, opening that allows you to keep the ISO reasonably low, hood supplied.

Cons: In the M4/3 it is a 32 equivalent and some zooms, such as the 12-40 pro, do just as well.

Opinion: I have both the 16 sigma and the 12-40 pro and the 12-100 pro Olympus. The greater aperture of the sigma solves some critical situations and in most cases, when apertures between 4 and 8 can be used, the yield is equivalent if not slightly higher than the two zooms, both in terms of colors and sharpness (clearly it is a personal opinion, I am not able to do instrumental tests). The weight is a problem only when I mount it on the Pen F, on the OM-1 the optics are well balanced. Do I recommend it? As much as I paid (used) it is worth all its money, both for the video and for the photos. the fact that in the M4/3 it is an equivalent 32 makes it interesting in the street, where it allows you not to have to think too much about the frame. For me it's a 9.

fujifilm_xf16_f2-8Fujifilm XF 16mm f/2.8 R WR

Pros: WR, value for money, weight and dimensions

Cons: Stuck at FW 1.0, to date it does not appear in the list of XF lenses

Opinion: Good lens, although not too bright. In my case it is coupled with a Pro-1 and it does very well, especially in the street where the weight and size of the whole make the difference. The construction looks solid but the manual focus ring is a little small and uncomfortable. The autofocus is quite fast and, at least in my specimen, precise. The WR is a plus and if you find it used it becomes really interesting. In short, a good fixed lens for use "on the fly".

panasonic_leica45macroPanasonic Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm f/2.8 ASPH OIS

Pros: 90mm equivalent, sharpness, three-dimensionality, blurred, construction

Cons: Non-lightning-fast AF (like many other macros)

Opinion: I state that macros, as well as in their specific field, really like them for generalist use and even in this case this remains a good goal. The three-dimensionality is excellent, nothing to say about sharpness and micro-contrast as well as on the blurred, the impression you get from the photos taken with this lens is really good. I use it mainly on the Pen F and sometimes on the OM-1, in both cases the autofocus is not very fast, although using the selector that limits the excursion (in full it starts from 15cm, in Limit from 50cm) improves. On the Pen F it is just a little bigger than it should, especially with the hood mounted, but the balance remains good. On the OM-1 it is perfect. Too bad that the hood (given the shape) can not be mounted backwards for transport. The construction is of a good standard and the 46 filters allow, if needed, to spend the right.

sony_rx100iiiSony RX100 III

Pros: Compact, wifi, mobile screen, good Raw performance (compared to other 1" devices)

Cons: Feeling fragility viewfinder, to be well used requires the addition of a rubber "cheek" that favors the grip, slow AF in the street

Opinion: Bought second-hand, it replaced the RX100 Mk1 in my motorcycle bag mainly for four reasons: portability, viewfinder (awkward but functional), mobile screen and wifi. Sometimes I regret the greater focal length of the mark1, but in most cases the equivalent 24-70 is enough for me. The AF is a little slow, especially when used in moving street, but it does its job. The results are more than good for a 1" sensor and the Raw are well workable. The aperture of the lens allows you to photograph in low light without having to force the ISO too much (over 1600 the quality of the images drops ... as it is logical). The built-in Nd filter is convenient as well as the small flash. Autonomy is sufficient. The RX100 M3 is a good compromise between cost and results, of course, the latest releases have many more features, but they cost a bang! I found it with charger and rubber cheek under 400E.

olympus_12-100_f4proOlympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-100mm f/4.0 IS Pro

Pros: Equivalent to a 24 to 200 in FF, fixed aperture at f / 4, very sharp at all focal lengths, close focus, feeling of constructive solidity, very efficient stabilization.

Cons: weight

Opinion: The first lens on the E-M1 MKII is now mounted on a stable basis on the OM-1. Excellent on the go both for versatility and image quality, also in relation to the extended focal range. The stabilization is such that you can leave the tripod at home in most situations, also if you need ... Voila, you can shoot with the subject a few cm from the front lens without needing anything else. a good purchase that does not replace the excellent fixed lenses of the PRO series but does not make them regret too much, aperture aside. In short, great flexibility for a must-have optics on the M4/3 system.

olympus_penfOlympus PEN-F

Pros: Quite light, beautiful and well built, fun to use, great for street and B & W.

Cons: AF sometimes dancer.

Opinion: It's not a half-size camera, you either love it or hate it. Beautiful to use, it almost never disappoints and allows you to take home good photos on any occasion. The viewfinder is not huge, but the articulated monitor, which when closed "disappears" into the back of the machine, is quite defined and allows you not to do stunts in shooting. Only the autofocus sometimes disappoints, especially in low light, but otherwise nothing to say. With the right optics it becomes invisible in the street, but I also use it with the Panasonic 100-300 for small episodes in birdlife or sports. It is not very modern, it is not as performing as the OM-1 and limits and the merits of the m4/3 know them all, but with this machine the defects tend to be forgotten and a place in my bag with the older sister always finds it. The line, needless to deny it, is nothing short of fascinating, to mine I added the wooden shutter button, just to make it even more beautiful. I forgot, the small flash is aesthetically questionable, but when it serves its work it does it very well.

fujifilm_60macroFujifilm XF 60mm f/2.4 R Macro

Pros: Lightweight, not bulky (without hood), sharp.

Cons: Metal hood but with rather fragile plastic "clothespins", slow and slightly noisy autofocus

Opinion: I had an X-T2 and then two XT3 with different lenses (18, 23, 35, 10-24, 55-200, 50-140, 16, 18-55 and 60macro), but the lens that remained in my heart is him: the 60mm macro. For me it is an excellent lens valid for all uses, of course, in macro it does not reach 1: 1, it is slow in AF and is a little noisy, but for portraits, the landscape where you need to cut out a detail or in generic photography where a 90 equivalent makes the difference, its yield is perfect. Today I have an X-Pro1 with the 16 2.8, but if I get the opportunity I will certainly buy the 60 macro again.

sony_a6400Sony A6400

Pros: Fast autofocus, file quality, compactness and lightness

Cons: Viewfinder, battery

Opinion: It replaced an A6000 and I must say that constructively it is not bad: although it is light it has a more robust air than the 6000 and until now, after a couple of years of use, it has not given me reason to change my mind. The speed of the AF is very good, as are the files produced. Paired with the 18-135 it is among my two favorite cars (the other is the PenF) for travel and city shots. Like all modern machines you have to "sew" on it, setting the myriad menu items according to your purposes. Speaking of menus, this seemed to me well done and, beyond certain imaginative abbreviations well consultable. I didn't suffer much from the lack of stabilizer, although mounting vintage optics can certainly be convenient. Unfortunately the viewfinder is really small and, for me who use glasses, complicated to manage; good instead the tilting screen, although personally I would have preferred it completely articulated. The battery would have to be reviewed, this allows you to make a good series of shots but nothing more, it is always better to have one in stock.

fujifilm_50-140wrFujifilm XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR

Pros: Sharp, good aperture, relative footprint, AF speed, WR

Cons: Weight , noises during transport.

Opinion: Used on X-T3 gave me excellent results. The autofocus is fast and both the build quality and the rendering in terms of sharpness and blur are great. The noises that come from the lens during transport with the machine off will not be dangerous, but they are certainly not reassuring. The weight is felt and I can safely say that after a day spent with two cars in the bag (I kept an X-T3 with the 50-140 and another X-T3 with the 10-24) I regretted having sold the 55-200, so if you do not need large openings or tropicalization, I recommend taking the 55-200, darker but with good performance and much lower weight, if you want the maximum, well, take the 50-140 with your eyes closed, it will hardly disappoint you.

fujifilm_x-pro1Fujifilm X-PRO1

Pros: Old style, substance, rendering of files, invitation to "calm" in photography

Cons: Battery, hybrid viewfinder more fascinating than useful, autofocus sometimes dancer

Opinion: Can it make sense in 2022 to buy a Pro-1? For me yes! I approached the Fuji X world with an X-T2 then changed / flanked by two X-T3, but the real object of desire has always been you, the Pro-1, which with its style had fascinated me so much when it was presented in 2012. Today I replaced the fuji with other machines, but when I found a pro-1 second-hand at 170 Euros... I couldn't resist. Purchased to work with old Shneider lenses, those of Kodak Retina, and with vintage Voitglander lenses, such as the 50mm Ultron, it ended up in my travel bag with a 16 2.8 fujinpn with low cost and good yield, forming an excellent combination for the street. Apart from the slightly "poor" battery and a certain operational slowness, it still proves to be a valid machine today; just understand its limits and do not look for performance not within its reach. The Hybrid viewfinder was a great novelty, but on the practical side it is rarely useful, for the rest nothing to say: the files are clean and well balanced and the various keys well arranged, although more than old style have an obsolete appearance. Would I recommend it? If you find it cheap and you have some optics to put on it, why not? It is however a piece of history still able to make excellent photographs.

sony_a6000Sony A6000

Pros: General quality of files (just look at the gallery below), great value for money, autofocus.

Cons: Battery life, feeling of fragility in use, viewfinder

Opinion: Taken new at just over 400 euros in kit with the 16-50, I replaced the lens (not even so bad as you read around) with a more comfortable 18-135 and it became my favorite travel car, at least until I replaced it with a 6400. Its strength is in the quality of the file (up to 800-1600 iso), in portability and operating speed, including autofocus.

sony_18-135ossSony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS

Pros: Definition, focal range, autofocus, stabilization.

Cons: None if compared to price and use.

Opinion: Mounted on the A6400 it has become a perfect travel companion. The whole is not very heavy and more than performing for normal shooting conditions; if it is a little bulky for the street, it is forgiven with the wide enough focal range. Last but not least, the fact that you don't have to change lenses often reduces the risk of "finding" dust on the sensor. For those who do not use a 6500/6600 the stabilization compensates (a little) for the low light and the vignetting at 18mm (visible in RAW indeed, ARW) is easily corrected in post. this last "defect" is in common with much more noble optics. On the other hand, when you design a lens with such an excursion and with this size somewhere you also have to compromise. If you find it used it is to buy without thinking, if you find it in kit also, for all the others ... well, you do, it might be worth it.

sony_rx100Sony RX100

Pros: Portability, lens, general image rendering

Cons: Lack of viewfinder, no wi-fi

Opinion: Purchased second-hand a year ago, it replaced the excellent G1X mII in accompanying me on the "rides" on the bike and for a few shots in the city. The autofocus is suitable for general and non-demanding use and the performance of the lens/sensor combination is definitely good. Shooting mainly in RAW I am used to giving a "fix" to the photographs in post, so any inaccuracies in white balance, especially in the shadows, do not worry me too much. The lack of the viewfinder is felt only on certain occasions, against the light for example, for the rest nothing to say. On the advice of a friend I added a rubber grip on the right side that greatly facilitates manageability. As a practicality of use it took the place of the Minox 35 that I used (and sometimes I still use) in the analog world. For me it remains a valid purchase even today.
