Reviews of cameras, lenses, tripods, heads and other accessories written by Andreascaffidi

fujifilm_50-140wrFujifilm XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR

Pros: Professional Lens, Excursion, Sharpness, Construction, Autofocus.

Cons: price of the new

Opinion: There is little to say about this lens, really well built and reliable in all respects. Bought used at a great price, it is giving me a lot of satisfaction both in photographic outings of pure pleasure and especially in the workplace. During the use I did not find any particular defects except for the more obvious and inevitable ones of the "bulky and heavy". The autofocus is always precise and reliable, I honestly don't remember hesitation in hooking to the subject. The sharpness is very good already at full aperture and I find the bokeh pleasing. Great construction, nothing to say. Of course, it is an optic that is now in its years (2014) and an update can only improve this already good product. In fact, I preferred to fall back on a used (guaranteed) instead of spending almost twice as much to get a new one and avoid the risk of a hypothetical release of an updated version, finding myself with an "obsolete" goal. But we are talking about a professional lens and it remains in any case a highly recommended choice.

fujifilm_x-h1Fujifilm X-H1

Pros: Stabilized, ergonomic, really advantageous second-hand price

Cons: battery life, single AF sometimes iffy

Opinion: It has been part of my kit for about 1 year and a half and until recently it has accompanied my X-Pro3 for various ceremonies. Working with 2 completely different machines, it is easier to express an opinion through a comparison. The x-h1 itself has excellent ergonomics, it grips well in the hand despite not being a reflex, and the weight is not excessive either. I find the stabilization excellent, it has been helpful in many cases where I didn't want to go up much with the iso and therefore use longer times. Very good overall file quality. The sore points, if compared in this case to my x-Pro3, are certainly the battery life and the responsiveness of the autofocus: on the latter, I must be honest, I often found myself in difficulty in conditions that are not entirely optimal for hooking, something that almost never happens with the x-pro3 which is of a very different conception and which I consider a much more ready and responsive camera. In principle, I recommend it mainly because it is a professional machine, and if you choose to buy used in 2023 the prices are really advantageous.

viltrox_af23_f1-4Viltrox AF 23mm f/1.4

Pros: Price, sharpness, construction

Cons: rendering of images on cold shades

Opinion: For the use I make of it we say that I have little to say, the lens is very valid, built well, excellent sharpness and great price. The only cons I can find is the annoying cold dominant that can be seen in the photos. Obviously you can correct it in post-production, or, as I do, adjust a white balance and select it when using this lens. In any case, recommended.

viltrox_af85_f1-8fe_iiViltrox AF 85mm f/1.8 II

Pros: Sharpness, construction, price

Cons: Lens hood

Opinion: My impressions are in line with those that preceded me in the review. Recently purchased, at the first use I was satisfied with this lens, which already behaves very well at full aperture. Unbeatable price quality in my opinion (since for Fuji the alternatives are not many). The only sore point is the hood that, in addition to being made of plastic unlike the younger brothers Viltrox, is really difficult to mount both in mode of use and at rest, it is really difficult to insert it at first glance without running the risk of ruining the thread. Too bad. All in all, however, apart from the hood, it is a lens that deserves. Advised

viltrox_af56_f1-4Viltrox AF 56mm f/1.4

Pros: Autofocus, overall quality, sharpness

Cons: cold shades

Opinion: I have been using it for about 2 months, mounted on the X-Pro3 and practically never unhooked, so I can get an idea. Surely for what it costs, especially used, it is very valid, I have little to say about it. The autofocus, combined with that of the camera, did not give me any particular problems in hooking the subjects, even in dim light. I noticed in the dominant photos cooler than other lenses, you can clearly see that they give more on the blue, but in post production we say that it corrects quite easily. Bokeh nice soft and great contrast. Very undecided initially whether to take the 56 of the parent company, but given the price I preferred to take the Viltrox and I did not regret it.

nikon_85_f1-4gNikon AF-S 85mm f/1.4 G

Pros: sharp, blur

Cons: hood, price, flare

Opinion: Professional portrait lens, there is little to say, gives great satisfaction. Used for about 2 years to do a bit of everything, not just portrait, also because it is a lens light enough to carry with you, compared to others I have had. The photos are already sharp at 1.4 (as long as I can focus on the desired point), absurd blurry and the contrast is good for my taste. I happened to photograph scenes where there were spotlights or light bulbs on and I noticed in the photos of the strange flare, so you have to be a little careful on these occasions. Lens that I recommend to portraitists! Of course, the price of the new in my opinion is absurd, obviously it is better to move to the used where it is between 800/900 euros.

fujifilm_x100fFujifilm X100F

Pros: Small, build quality, overall image quality

Cons: ergonomics, battery

Opinion: I state that I use it only for street shots, without controlled lights or anything else and above all without fiddling in the menu: naked and raw. Excellent car, I always carry it with me when possible, given the bulk. I was impressed by the image quality, churns out (from good fuji) excellent jpegs. Maybe I find it a bit uncomfortable sometimes in pressing the various keys, especially the ignition one that almost seems to have no grip for my taste. Initially I happened to press with my thumb the menu button and the directional cursors, a matter of habit and it will not happen again. The battery on these machines you know, they do not last long, but just buy some spare and the problem is solved. Ultimately it is an excellent compact to always carry with you, pleasant to use, more suitable for street and reportage.

samyang_14Samyang 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC Aspherical

Pros: Sharpness, price

Cons: distortion

Opinion: For my taste it is an excellent lens, used for a few years has given me great satisfaction. If you want a wide angle pushed at an affordable price it seems difficult to opt for anything else. Really good sharpness and image quality. Vignetting and distortion are easily corrected through the slow profiles present in the software. Advised

samyang_85Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical IF

Pros: Overall image quality, blurry.

Cons: Manual focus, not very sharp at 1.4, some chromatic aberration.

Opinion: Taken used for just under 300 euros, it is a lens that has given me satisfaction, not being able to spend on other more performing ones. At 1.4 as many say it does not split the hair, but it is still usable for my taste, nothing tragic. Some aberration is noticeable, especially in some light conditions and at full aperture, but even there it can be and in most cases I have solved in post. The blurred is really nice, I got to appreciate it in some portraits and the detachment of the planes is pleasant. If you do not need autofocus, then a more still life use or in any case in "controlled" situations, it is an excellent compromise. I happened to make use of it in more dynamic areas and I must say that the lack of autofocus is felt, but it could also be a limit of mine due to the comfortable habit of using the AF :). I recommend it especially to those who have a limited badget.

tamron_70-300vcTamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD

Pros: sharpness, price, stabilization

Cons: for what it costs no one

Opinion: Here, too, the number of reviews of this lens speaks for itself. It is great for value for money. I do not repeat myself on the Pros, they are those, I just wanted to add that I had the opportunity to "compare" it with my ex 70 200 2.8 vr2 (finally sold in exchange for this Tamron for a matter exclusively of weight and bulk on the occasion of a trip): The Nikon is Nikon, on the aperture, on the general build quality and on the contrast of the image (prices necessarily very different also), but I must say that the Tamron in terms of sharpness behaves really well in the focal lengths in common. After 200mm it begins to lose slightly in quality, but it can stay there and it's fine like that. Take a used one because it's worth it, I recommend it.

sigma_35_f1-4Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

Pros: Sharpness at 1.4, construction.

Cons: perhaps weight and bulk

Opinion: The number of reviews of this lens on juza speaks for itself. There is little to say, it is the best lens I have had as a yield, sometimes I have the impression of seeing a photo almost in 3D. Many complain about these Sigma models back and front focus problems, I have never had them but maybe it will have been luck. Honestly I can't think of any cons, I only had satisfaction using it. If I really have to find one I would say weight and bulk, but it is relative. The price of the new is worth them all, of course I recommend always looking on the used, maybe on RCE which is guaranteed. EXTRA-NOT-WON

nikon_d4Nikon D4

Pros: read the opinion below

Cons: read the opinion below

Opinion: We are talking about a tank ready for anything and reliable, those who are a minimum interested in buying know very well what these types of machines offer and what they must be used for. First of all, reliability: it is a robust, ready machine, responsive in autofocus and above all in shooting. A real pleasure to use it, and (despite the weight) keep it in your hand does not tire thanks to the ergonomic research that was done during the design. The keys are put in the right place, some as always customizable and light up with the appropriate switch, which I had the opportunity to appreciate a lot since in the time I had it I always shot at night. The battery lasts a lot, I never needed to buy a second one, you almost forget to recharge (obviously never taken in live-view and video almost never). The image quality very good, the sensor returns sharp files with a fairly faithful color, also thanks to the white balance that in most cases is reliable (greatly improved with D4S). Burst we do not talk about it, excellent and always ready. She's called the queen of high ISOs, so I avoid talking about it. In short, for the use I made of it (sport, still life, ceremonies) I was satisfied. On the other hand there are 2.3 things to report (due to the nature of the camera model): The shooting noise is heard, and as if it is heard, especially when you are in fairly quiet places like the church during a ceremony, or at the theater, the CLACK everyone notices it. Taking many long exposures at night I noticed that in the photo there is a huge amount of hot pixels (only after 25/30 seconds) somewhat annoying, take this into account. The autofocus, although excellent, I can not say that it was infallible, some shots I reed it but there may be several factors, such as the poorly performing lens, a not perfect calibration of my model, particular light conditions or more simply it is me who expects a lot ?. I open a small parenthesis on the autofocus: After the D4 I had the D810, a great machine, designed to do something else. With the autofocus of the D810 in some situations I had the frustration of losing a few moments, but I understand that it could have been there given the non-sporty nature of the car (although it has the same AF module as the D4S, but that's fine). Moral of the parenthesis, I abandoned nikon after 12 years for a matter of bulk and certainly not for the quality, now I have a fuji X-pro3 that paradoxically focuses me even in the dark, closed brackets ?. Ultimately, using the D4 is a real pleasure, for the areas for which it was designed then it is the best, you will hardly be disappointed. Take it used now, in the year 2021, you will make a deal because there are used models with a few shots at a price that is necessarily affordable (remember that after the D4S, D5 and D6 came out). Personally I abandoned that type of photography and of course I had to change camera but I can assure you that it was a real pleasure.

fujifilm_x_pro3Fujifilm X-PRO3

Pros: file quality, size, weight, design, build quality, ergonomics, film simulation, autofocus, burst with electronic shutter.

Cons: price, menu, high ISO?

Opinion: After 12 years of Nikon SLR system (d60, d7000, d700, d4 and d810) I felt the need to change especially for a speech of dimensions, not of feeling and quality, also because perhaps to change was my way of photographing, and now I need to be able to always carry the camera with me. I have the x-pro3 for 2 months and I had the opportunity to try it and get used to the abyss that there is on the size but also on the approach to shooting compared to the SLR (electronic viewfinder in the first place), and I must say that it was not a trauma, also because I felt for some time I had to undertake a change. The electronic viewfinder is something phenomenal, you already know how the photo will come out and it is a huge convenience, especially in situations where you can not start adjusting parameters and always check the settings, you have everything under control with the preview of the viewfinder. The hidden display for me is a genius, always protected, it does not distract you and is very comfortable when you do street, you open it 90 ° down holding the machine at the height of the belly and look from top to bottom, as if you had a cockpit camera (not even giving too much to the eye). The image quality is really good, I can not compare it to the 36 megapixel D810 (and there are the compromises) but it is excellent, perhaps I noticed a slight suffering at high iso but I have to check better because I did not happen to go beyond 1600, I reserve for the future and in case I update the review. The menu can be improved, sometimes I get lost looking for some things that I expect to find in one place and are actually put elsewhere, but it must be said that those who choose this machine will not waste much time scrolling through the menu, they will set it once and that's it. Autofocus side nothing to say, very fast, rarely went away in difficulty and I noticed that it focuses in really dark areas, something unthinkable to do with the D810 (just to make a comparison with models I had). To conclude, it is an excellent machine, stimulating and fun, suitable for the street but certainly no one will fine you if you use it to do anything else :). The price is definitely high, new costs almost 2000, does not have the charger supplied and therefore you have to buy it separately. It is not for everyone, those who buy it know what they want and are hardly disappointed.

nikon_d810Nikon D810

Pros: 36 megapixel sensor, colors, general ergonomics, high iso

Cons: microvy, heavy files, autofocus

Opinion: Removed after 4 years of use for system change, I can say that it was a really nice car. The first time I shot with the D810 (coming from d700, another great car) I realized that it churned out rows with almost non-existent colors, it could capture nuances that the eye did not perceive and therefore I was surprised. Good ergonomics (she is not too heavy either), keys in the right place and obviously customizable as always; image quality we don't even talk about it, for me excellent. The sore point, perhaps for my model, was the difficulty in hooking the subject by the autofocus, sometimes frustrating and really annoying, apparently even when the lighting and contrast were not bad. Another flaw was the micromosso, almost always present with not too long times, but on a 36 megapixel I think it is normal (or maybe it is me who expects a lot ?), on the other hand this is a machine that prefers a certain type of controlled, meditated photography, maybe placed on the tripod, and there it really shows the best of itself. Photographing a lot "on the street" I realized that it was too bulky to be able to carry it almost daily with me, so I decided to remove it not because disappointed by the performance but for different portability needs that could not satisfy. However, I would recommend it, especially now where on the used you can find them in excellent condition at affordable prices.

nikon_d700Nikon D700

Pros: Fastness, processability of files, high iso, reliable.

Cons: if pargaonata to other more recent bodies we notice the difference in image quality, but now antiquated sensor legendary.

Opinion: Taken 2 years ago secondhand in place of d7000: although two years older than the d700 made me do a good jump, I think there is no comparison, since the colors and shades that I could grasp the full frame , never managed with d7000 or almost always dissatisfied (end fact I sold it). I am very well, it is reliable and the AF does not miss me a shot, the 12 Mpxl are good but sometimes feel the need to have more pixels to make more driven clippings, but I survive the same;) is in used are many opportunities, yet kept up with few scatti..consigliata.
