sony_fe12-24_f2-8gmSony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 GM

Pros: Definitive!

Cons: Optically and mechanically none, if we want to say the price and the lack of aperture ring, but these are things that you know before taking it.

Opinion: For Sony and also for Fuji I tried almost all UWAs. Nothing compares to the quality I find in this zoom. I've been doing the mail since it came out, but I've been circling around it for years, testing for Sony both the little brother of the G series, all the excellent Voigtlander, and the Sigma 14-24, the only one that in terms of zoom has shown me to have, almost, the same incredible quality as this 12-24 GM. But the Sigma stops at 14 and as a focal length you can see the difference. The GM is basically 6 fixed lenses of the highest quality, enclosed in a body that is all in all compact and not very heavy, (the Sigma has a slightly lower weight and size and to have a 12 you still have to carry a fixed one...), and all 6 of these lenses are perfectly correct, both in terms of aberrations and distortion and with a record-breaking sharpness. Another nice plus is the solar star, at the level of the Voigtlander, despite the high number of diaphragm blades. I understand the criticism for the filters, which can be mounted in the appropriate rear housing, but I don't use them so I'm fine with it as it is. For those like me who love these focal lengths and use Sony I can only say that there is nothing better, if you want to have the highest quality with the great versatility of a zoom this is the non plus ultra. Grade 10 laude.

minolta_rokkor58Minolta MD Rokkor 58mm f/1.4

Pros: Amazing goal! Perhaps the best value for money performance on the market.

Cons: Poor resistance to flare, needs an excellent lens hood.

Opinion: Dr. Jekill and Mr. Hyde, a truly incredible two-sided goal. A TA is soft but is so pictorial that it feels like using a brush, with a structured but at the same time sweet blur that is something unique. From f2.8 onwards it plays as sharpness with the best modern lenses, but this one is almost 60 years old and I don't think there are any moderns with this character. I love vintage lenses, especially the ones full of character, I have and have had several, but if I have to choose one I would say that this Minolta is my favorite. The beauty is that you can buy it for a few tens of euros and surprisingly it also holds up well to the 42 mpx of the A7RIII. I'm not saying that it doesn't have defects, in fact the sun suffers a lot if it enters the frame, and obviously it's only manual and without EXIF. But with a few targeted attentions, the results it gives are magnificent. Vote 10.

sigma_10-18dnSigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN C

Pros: Very small, very light, very sharp. And it's cheap for an f2.8 too.

Cons: Zoom ring that turns backwards, nothing serious, you get used to it.

Opinion: I'm just stunned! The sharpness is impressive and this already at f2.8, and over the entire focal range. Extraordinary. The fact that it doesn't have a bezel I can understand is annoying, especially if you use Fuji from the XT series. But I come from a time when I was using Sony, and there were lenses without a ring there, so I learned how to use wheels. It's true that even on the XE4 not seeing the aperture without putting the camera to the eye is a bit annoying, but I photograph 99% looking through the viewfinder so, at least for me, it's a false problem. On the XH series, on the other hand, the diaphragm can be seen on the upper display, and here the problem just doesn't arise. Slight vignetting at TA and distortion present, but very well corrected with C1. The fact remains that, as I had seen in Abbot's and Frost's tests, the sharpness is exceptional, especially in a zoom that, to see it so tiny, seems a compromise in all its parameters. Amazing what this little gem pulls out, which I remember, is an f2.8!! The corresponding Fuji, which I've used for years in both versions, doesn't even come close. And the Fuji, like the Tamron, which by the way starts at 11mm, is also more expensive, bigger and heavier. Absolutely passed with full marks.

fujifilm_xf8_f3-5Fujifilm XF 8mm f/3.5 R WR

Pros: Razor-sharp, tiny, light-hearted.

Cons: Zero

Opinion: What more could you ask for from a 12mm equivalent? It's very sharp, weighs nothing and is pocket-sized. Some criticize the fact that it's not f2.8, but come on, it's not even a more closed stop, even if it were an f5.6. By the way, I used the 12mm f5.6 Voigtlander on FF and this little gem not only has nothing, but absolutely nothing, to envy it, especially in terms of sharpness, but the Fuji is also AF. Not that it's a real plus on these focal lengths, but having done Af with this size and with this aperture is really miraculous. And then, this is really important, it can mount screw filters. It's expensive, but in my opinion it's worth the money, excellent lens.

voigtlander_10_f5-6hyperwideVoigtlander (E, VM) 10mm f/5.6 Hyper-Wide-Heliar

Pros: The world is in it. Sharp, small and built to last!

Cons: Very few and easily corrected.

Opinion: I chose Leica version to be able to use it adapted on both Sony and Fuji. In both cases it behaves very well, obviously on Fuji it becomes a 15mm equivalent. It is not easy to use, you have to be careful with the composition, since the angle of view is infinite. Vignette a little, and we would miss it, but it does not distort almost anything and the sharpness is always excellent. Slight but easily correctable chromatic aberrations are compensated by a beautiful star effect. Handling it is pornography, it really looks like a jewel, due to the excellent proportions between weight and size. I normally use it at f8 and f11 in hyperfocal, so the fact that it is not AF does not matter. Maybe a little dark for the night stars, but I do not do so I do not see it as a problem, just as for me it is not a problem the impossibility of mounting filters. In practice, it is an incredible goal, rating 10.

zeiss_variosonnar100-300cyZeiss Vario-Sonnar 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 (C/Y)

Pros: Excellent mechanical optical quality, colors and feeling of trimensionity, cost.

Cons: It stretches if carried on the shoulder, heavy, difficult to find a specimen in excellent condition.

Opinion: Purchased used in Japan, paid little for its value, customs fees included, being a 75xxxx seems free from the typical defects of the serial numbers 74xxxx, has lenses clean from mold and opacity. For the rest, being an admirer of C / Y I can say that this zoom is a Zeiss in all respects. Excellent optical quality at virtually all focal lengths and from TA to f11. Virtually no aberration. Perfectly frictioned ring for both functions, a sensory pleasure maneuver it. The colors are typically Zeiss, loads the right but never exaggerated. The bokeh is excellent, creamy and never intrusive, together with the great sharpness gives a beautiful pop effect, typical of the brand. The few defects are those described above, but the weight is a guarantee of solidity, in fact it seems built to go to war. The fact that it stretches is annoying but it is nothing dramatic. For many the fact that it is not AF can be a problem, but I would not put it as a defect, the pleasure of using this ring is priceless and, with some expensive exceptions, impossible to find in modern lenses.

sony_fe20-70Sony FE 20-70mm F4 G

Pros: Very sharp at all focal lengths, small, light, beautiful yield and colors, nice bokeh, close-up performance, physical aperture ring.

Cons: For what it costs a metal hood they could put it there.

Opinion: It's the ultimate universal zoom. Put under pressure in difficult light conditions, it proved to be practically perfect. It is incredibly sharp over the entire range of focal lengths, excellent backlight hold, f11 star effect really nice, imperceptible ac, at the higher focal length it has great macro capabilities, and without loss of quality, maintaining a soft and pleasant bokeh. I do not consider a defect the lack of stabilization, whose modulus would have increased the size, while distortion and vignetting, canceled in jpeg, are very easily corrected on the raw. And anyway I didn't find them as devastating as seen in the various reviews. Maybe C1 23 already has automatic correction, because in my raw are really minimal defects. The price at launch is quite high, but the performance is very high. Practically perfect weight and dimensions, functional but plastic hood. For me I vote 10.

fujifilm_xf10-24wrFujifilm XF 10-24mm f/4 R OIS WR

Pros: Sharp, small and light, and above all it holds well the 40 MPX of the XH2!

Cons: Slight drop in performance above 20mm. Usual plastic hood and aesthetically unwatchable.

Opinion: I use this zoom from the first output of the non-WR version. I have always liked it for its great versatility, lightness and not exaggerated size. Moreover, having had at least 4, I have always had excellent copies and they have never given me problems, except for the physiological drop in sharpness, especially at the edges at the higher focal lengths. But from 10 to 18 mm has always been a blade already at TA and up to f8. I must say that this new version, despite having the same optical scheme as the previous one, even on the XT3 seems to me to have a sharpness and a higher microcontrast. In short, the impression is that it is really very, very sharp. And the beauty is that it does not lose anything even on the 40 mpx sensor of my XH2. I am very satisfied.

fujifilm_xh2Fujifilm X-H2

Pros: Image quality and build quality at the highest level.

Cons: Body slightly limited in height.

Opinion: Ultimate aps-c machine. Able to do everything and very well, with a practically perfect AF, an excellent viewfinder and a more common iso rendering simply stunning. I have had all the T series and also the H1, and I can confirm that this is of a higher category. Even without the famous, (and beautiful) T-series rings, the ease of use is perfect. The new sensor reproduces beautiful colors and very extended dynamic range, in addition to the 5 real stops of stabilization. I was able to compare it with my Sony A7IV and the differences are almost imperceptible. The only slightly negative point, but it is my problem that I have very large hands, is, as for my A7IV, the body limited in height, so the little finger tends to escape underneath. I immediately solved with a Smallrig board and, in the face of a minimal increase in weight and size, it is now also perfect as ergonomics. Awesome machine, rated 10!

voigtlander_vm50_f1-2Voigtlander (E, VM) 50mm f/1.2 Nokton Aspherical

Pros: Construction, sharpness, bokeh, aesthetics.

Cons: Nobody.

Opinion: A "normal" superluminous without defects. Pure poetry at TA up to f2, sharp from f2.8 to f8. The bokeh is fabulous, the construction and fluidity of the MaF bezel are excellent. The price more than adequate to the overall quality of the lens. Excellent weight and dimensions. The fact that it is MF cannot be seen as a flaw and the version I use for Sony transmits data and magnifies the viewfinder vision during the MaF. And for fetishists like me.... but how beautiful it is!!! Perfect, rating 10.

voigtlander_vm21_f1-8Voigtlander VM 21mm f/1.8 Ultron

Pros: Photographic rendering, sharpness already at TA, absence of distortions, bokeh.

Cons: I can't find any.

Opinion: Spectacular lens. It reminds me a lot of the Fuji 14 f2.8, which is yes autofocus, but over a less bright stop than this Voigt. And for the great brightness it has it is really small, as per the tradition of the brand. Whether it is MF then has little importance, a 21 at f 5.6 in hyperfocal already has everything in focus. I use it on my A7IV with adapter and I'm really excited about it. It has a particular rendering, its own character, which give the image a beautiful look almost like film. Very beautiful both colors and blurred. The starry light points, in addition to the great correctness of the distortion, close the circle. Defects for now I have not found, so for me it deserves the highest marks.

sigma_14-24_f2-8dnSigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art

Pros: Sharpness, flares resistance, construction, brightness, price.

Cons: Missing diaphragm ring.

Opinion: Exceptional goal. The sharpness is simply incredible, at the level, if not greater, of the best fixed focal lengths. Already at f2.8 it is impressive, it is excellent even at the edges and at close range it even offers a more than good bokeh. The construction is excellent, holding it in your hand while photographing is a pleasure, neither too busy nor too heavy. Flares tightness in exemplary backlight. It has the programmable button, but lacks the physical diaphragm ring. It's not a big deal, but on such a lens would have been the eyelash on the cake. The perfect UWA zoom.

zeiss_batis18_f2-8Zeiss Batis 18mm f/2.8

Pros: Sharp sharp sharp! Lightness, colors, aesthetics.

Cons: Hood material.

Opinion: Optically monstrous, the sharpness is incredible already at TA. This remarkable result allows, on Sony type A7III or A7IV to have almost a zoom, since the quality remains very high even cropping, in practice it is as if you had an 18-28 in your hand. Vivid colors are typically Zeiss. The lens has very few optical defects, however correctable via software. The construction, despite the lightness, give the impression of great solidity. Note of personal merit, the tulip aesthetic, particular and captivating, however so original as to make it immediately recognizable. I took it used by paying it the right, although from new it is perhaps slightly expensive. But its real flaw in my opinion is the hood, in simple plastic, inadequate to the coat of arms of the brand, blazon that for the rest I find fully respected by the incredible optical performance.

sony_fe85_f1-4gmSony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM

Pros: Character lens, dream bokeh, perfectly neutral colors.

Cons: Slightly noisy in af, minimum distance of MaF, (but it concerns all 85 mm), important weight and bulk, cost from new.

Opinion: Needless to turn around, this lens has something special. As the owner of the spectacular brother of the Sigma house, the new DG DN, which really goes more than well and churns out magnificent images, I must admit that this GM beats him in something that makes the difference for me, the rendering of the images. It has something special that is found above all in those objectives that, coincidentally, do not reach the maximum performance of MTF or aberration corrections. It's a bit like Canon's Big One, perfectly flawed. And then it is the classic GM, impeccably built to withstand heavy use, from f2.8 onwards it also becomes extremely sharp but, also thanks to the rounded slats, always with a wonderful bokeh. The negative sides I wrote and I admit that I found the perfect specimen only on the third attempt, since the first two, however always taken used, at TA had poor sharpness. A great goal, in every sense.

sigma_85_f1-4dn_artSigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art

Pros: all... or almost.

Cons: Cap, but above all lampshhed.

Opinion: Wonderful lens, with sharpness, bokeh and top colors. I'm using it with Sony A7RIII and I'm just excited about the results. I had the 85 GM, which I especially liked for the character, less for the sharpness at TA. This Sigma looks a lot like him for the beautiful bokeh, but it is much superior in terms of resolution to TA and especially for the colors he knows how to return. Even the much-vituperated jpeg seem to come to life. Better even than the superb 135 GM! EXCELLENT AF and lack of optical defects, (which to be honest there are but are excellently correct via software with C1), complete the picture. The cons are almost irrelevant, but one I would like to stress, namely the monstrously great lampshed. Really overdone! I changed it with a universal screw from a few euros and the lens changed its appearance positively, returning that wonderful "little" jewel that it is. Another weed, which unfortunately applies to all 85 mm and I do not understand why, is the minimum distance of MaF. But the spectacular yield, compared to the price, I would say right, makes these small things take second place.

sony_fe35_f1-4gmSony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM

Pros: Sharpness, bokeh, weight and size, AF, colors.

Cons: nothing

Opinion: The positives are the usual of the latest GMs, monstrous sharpness already at TA, we are at the incredible levels of the 135GM, too high contrast, on the portraits I had to soften, beautiful neutral colors but slightly tending to the heat. The beauty is that it has its own character, as mood resembles the 85 GM, compared to which it is much more engraved, but with a very similar bokeh, I dare say dreamy. The AF on the A73 and A7R3 is super fast, I guess the better it can be on the last ML. The assessment of size and weight is extremely positive. For the price, in my opinion it is not a defect, it is a unique lens with primacy characteristics in every field, and of course quality is paid for. Simply extraordinary goal!

samyang_af50_f1-4Samyang FE 50mm f/1.4 AF AS IF UMC

Pros: Sharpness, bokeh, construction, aesthetics.

Cons: AF a bit noisy.

Opinion: Objective that is worth every euro that costs, it was written Zeiss there would be nothing to say. The bokeh is beautiful, the sharpness is already more than good at TA, the feeling in hand is of a really very well done lens and it is even very nice to see. Too bad only for the noise of the AF, which is not lightning but which still hooks well. All in all I am fully satisfied.

sony_fe135_f1-8Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM

Pros: All!

Cons: Don't have it. It's addictive.

Opinion: Top of the mediateles. It has practically no flaws, everything in this lens communicates absolute excellence. Exceptionally sharp already at TA, with a poetic, sweet and creamy bokeh and practically zero obvious optical defects. Incredible how the yield remains constant both to the various diaphragms, and to the variation of the distance of maf. MaF which, by the way, allows excellent close ups. And in manual the ring, even if it does not have a limiter, is clutched in an exemplary way. The A7RIII's 42 mpx only enhances its qualities. It costs dearly, but if you want the top that the market offers it is normal for you to charge. Absolutely balanced size and weight, feeling of solidity at the highest levels. Practically perfect optics.

fujifilm_8-16_f2-8wrFujifilm XF 8-16mm f/2.8 R LM WR

Pros: Sharpness at every focal and diaphragm, top construction.

Cons: Nothing to me.

Opinion: Extraordinary goal! If we think of the focal points and the constant opening, the price, weight and footprint are easy to understand. I come from years of using the 10-24, a zoom that I loved very much and that gave me enormous satisfaction, but I have to admit that this 8-16 is of a sueriore category. Mandatory, if one uses them, the non-indefatigable expense for suitable slab filters, but I think if one wants to get the most out of a zoom in certain photo scopes the 8-16 is the perfect choice.

fujifilm_56_f1-2Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 R

Pros: Sharpness already in TA, wonderful bokeh, colors and reading shadows.

Cons: AF not always accurate and not very fast, minimum distance of maf.

Opinion: I've been following him forever and finally, found a used in new condition, I finally decided to buy it. It's a gorgeous optics, incredibly sharp already at TA, with a dream bokeh, returns a feeling of three-dimensionality of the subject and has an ability to return the colors of the scene out of the ordinary. In practice optically it is perfect. And despite being light, it conveys sensations of great robustness. And it's also nice to see.... The cons, which are there, are the ones I mentioned, but in proportion to the merits I consider them, for my kind of photography, of really minimal importance. Used on XE3 the AF is still good, while on XT1, when it doesn't work properly, I use the manual maf taking advantage of the excellent viewfinder and its automatic magnification with focus peaking. Final consideration: over more than thirty years of photography and the more than one hundred goals of all the brands and value I have used, this is definitely among the best. Just extraordinary.

fujifilm_14mmFujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R

Pros: All!

Cons: Nothing!

Opinion: The wide-angle par excellence. Ultra-sharp to all diaphragms, exceptional for microcontrast and absence of distortions, small and light. With the plus of having a character of its own, the images it gives have a unique three-dimensionality. I've had several Fuji goals, including some of the most successful like the 35 1.4 or the 60 and the 80 macro or the 50-140, but this 14 is amazing. I'm using it on XE3 and it solves all its 24 mp without any problem. I really can't find a fault with him. Exceptional optics, I am completely satisfied.

zeiss_variosonnar80-200cyZeiss Vario-Sonnar 80-200mm f/4 (C/Y)

Pros: Sharpness over the entire focal range, F/4 fixed, light and very well built. A real Zeiss.

Cons: For the value for money for me of big flaws does not have any, apart from perhaps an important physical length.

Opinion: I wanted a cheap tele zoom and my trusted shopkeeper had this little gem on sale at a cheap price. After I finally got it today I had the chance to test it on my trusted XE3. I know the fantastic Zeiss lenses, I used them already last century with a film RTS2, and then I had the 85 1.4 on the latest Fuji. But this zoom I had never considered. I admit that a zoom pump and with manual MAF puzzled me, so I went into the store with all the doubts of the case. But once I tried it, I didn't think about it for a second. The sharpness is always great, the bokeh is creamy, the ring that commands both the MAF and the focal is spectacular, typically Zeiss. If only it had been a little less long.... But I would say that for figures around 200 euros I do not think you can find better. And not least, it works and pretty well even with the Fuji 1.4 TC. Promoted with flying colors.
