Pros: One Word: Poetic.

Cons: Too vintage for those accustomed to modern glass!

Opinion: What is the right adjective to describe this glass? POETICAL. Is that too much? NOT for me! This Sony 85 F1.4 GM is like this, but a large part of photographers (experienced or not) have not understood it. Not even I understood it at the beginning since I read many reviews (even pseudo) that criticized it for many of the defects it has. But is it really so? This is subjective. It is built at the highest level, very solid and with very fine quality glass (like the whole G Master Line). What about quality? we are in 2022 and although the competition has churned out other 85mm with modern character, the GM is a mixture between vintage and modern. Today modern glasses are ultra sharp with blurred sometimes too hard, the Sony has a POETIC rendering especially at f1.4, like a picture with delicate nuances to act as a backdrop to the sharp but delicate subject. The bokeh reaches unexpected levels of balance and elegance (the 11 blades of the diaphragm do their part) and also the color rendering stands out compared to other lenses, with natural tones. The various defects are corrected quietly, but the real defect is the ssm engine, a bit 'old and a little' noisy. Beyond this L'85 GM is a glass that you will fall in love with. I currently own the '85 Sigma for over a year (soon I will write something about him), but the heart is still for the Sony GM, and although it may have all the defects of this world the magic that Sony possesses if you dream of sigma. On Sigma I complain about the too modern rendering but the concept of modernity is ruining the magic of photography; a decade ago the glasses were poetic (example the Canon 85 F1.2II) today we find ultra-sharp and ultra-correct lenses but that are "soulless". Is progress to blame? I do not know but to you the arduous sentence. Finally, in October 2022, I sold the Sigma and bought the Sony back. The sony GM is another world, the perfect example of modern art with a touch of vintage...

Pros: Everything, gives emotions

Cons: The price (more than justified)

Opinion: This review wants to be different from the others. I have in my kit important optics, all Sony GM. But this lens has a special place in my heart. It happened to have literally kissed her. It gave me so much luck, it allowed me to make beautiful shots, it turned my passion for photography into a second job. I am very grateful to this lens which from my point of view is exceptional. The Sony FE85MM GM 1.4 simply gives emotions. If you feel it is yours, it will be part of you by becoming one with it.

Pros: Character lens, dream bokeh, perfectly neutral colors.

Cons: Slightly noisy in af, minimum distance of MaF, (but it concerns all 85 mm), important weight and bulk, cost from new.

Opinion: Needless to turn around, this lens has something special. As the owner of the spectacular brother of the Sigma house, the new DG DN, which really goes more than well and churns out magnificent images, I must admit that this GM beats him in something that makes the difference for me, the rendering of the images. It has something special that is found above all in those objectives that, coincidentally, do not reach the maximum performance of MTF or aberration corrections. It's a bit like Canon's Big One, perfectly flawed. And then it is the classic GM, impeccably built to withstand heavy use, from f2.8 onwards it also becomes extremely sharp but, also thanks to the rounded slats, always with a wonderful bokeh. The negative sides I wrote and I admit that I found the perfect specimen only on the third attempt, since the first two, however always taken used, at TA had poor sharpness. A great goal, in every sense.

Pros: "Poetic" Yield, Bokeh, Sharpness, Colors, Solidity and Construction

Cons: slight AF noise, weight, cost, a thread of aberrations at TA backlight

Opinion: My favorite lens, despite having the 135mm 1.8 (excellent) is versatile, comfortable, but above all it is a lens that makes you dream: a blurry exemplary, beautiful colors, three-dimensionality, is a lens that for a portraitist is absolutely to have. The construction is very solid, it looks like a grenade to hold in your hand, the dials are precise and the customizable button is very comfortable. During the shot it gives me a feeling that no lens is able to return. At full opening it is crisp although not perfect as the 135, it has a thread of chromatic aberrations and backlight softens a thread the contrasts, but it is all balanced by a general rendering of the image that makes you dream. I prefer it by far to the Sigma (giant and uncomfortable) or Samyang alternatives of which I am not convinced by the bokeh. The AF makes a constant noise in the focus that can give a bit of a nuisance and the focus is not as fast as the 135, although it is precise and definitely not slow. It's a lens that I personally love, it won't be perfect but it's literally "Magic", I had sold it to take the 135 GM and flank it the as good 85 1.8 because of the size, but I went back on my steps and bought it back because I realized it's a cu lens i I couldn't help it.

Pros: Pretty much everything

Cons: Cost, annoying engine noise af

Opinion: It is very true that you often come across better successful and worst-performed copies of the same article. I say this because I'm still laughing after reading the review that precedes mine. Anyway, let's go in order. Construction quality as befits a professional-grade product. Metal, well coupled, well finished and tropicalized. The lampshade is also well made with anti-reflection material inside and rubber ring on top. This 85mm has the diaphragm ring on the barrel and this is a very familiar thing to me since for years I use mainly manual lenses. The dial in question can be selected with or without clicking. I would have preferred it a little more frictiony instead it's pretty soft. The dimensions and weights are considerable but are physiological given the needs of modern sensors. My copy (I say so given the review that precedes mine) enjoys a very good sharpness already at full opening. The closing of one or two stops is only by virtue of the depth of field you want to get and certainly not for lack of sharpness. The af system behaves in different ways depending on the machine body that has to control it. In this I totally agree with the previous review. The only downside of this lens is, for me, the annoying noise that produces the af moped. Sounds like the sound of some broken. Like the first-generation Fujifilm XF lenses. The blurred is very good and manages (to extreme openings) to pull the subject out of the context around it. Over the years, more and more high-performing goals are produced, but with less and less "character and personality". See the Sigma. Perfect but aseptic, flat. Before buying this sony I tried the sigma 85 and 135. As I repeat, they are perfect. Even sharper than these sony but without any "flavor". I preferred this G Master, despite costing much more than Sigma, precisely because it gives the photos a little more "fairytale" feeling that in my opinion is a must in a lens of these features and this band. Very often perfection kills "magic". In conclusion, for the use for which it was born, I consider it a superb glass and therefore very recommended. Rating 9.5
