canon_35_f2isCanon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM

Pros: Excellent sharpness, excellent soft and homogeneous blur, good construction, excellent autofocus, flare resistance, colors and contrast, stabilized and lightweight. Reliable.

Cons: Nothing relevant given the value for money. Not tropicalized, little wide fire ring, three-dimensionality not at the level of the big brother f1.4.

Opinion: First of all for the quality-price at which it is sold it is convenient, it can be an excellent travel and work companion, it is a reliable and efficient lens in all situations, an almost L series. Excellent construction albeit largely in plastic that still guarantees a certain lightness even if the stabilizer is present, very useful and very welcome. Very sharp already from f2, from f2.8 it is a blade even at the corners, with excellent colors and contrasts and resistance to flare. The autofocus is almost infallible, reliable even at TA, fast and quite quiet. The blur is soft and homogeneous, pleasant even for portraits, in general the three-dimensionality is not poetic and on this the big brother f1.4 outclasses it, but the aperture of f2 is almost always sufficient to detach the subject from the background and matches well with the project of this lens; Otherwise aim for the more expensive and heavy brother F1.4. Highly recommended lens, purchased like new for € 399 and used for portraiture on Aps-c and Aps-h and especially for portraiture set on Full Frame.

canon_24-105_f4iiCanon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM II

Pros: Sharpness, constant f4, tropicalization, blurred with 10 slats, silent and fast focus, contained distortion and aberration, 4 stop stabilization.

Cons: Slightly the weight, the chromatic aberrations and the lower sharpness at the edges with wide-angle millimeters and TA. It weighs a lot, and the price lately is a bit too high... having spent almost 1500€ plus 2000 for the 5D Mark IV weighed on me in every sense.

Opinion: Excellent all-rounder L series, robust and performing, without "wow" effect, but certainly good in all aspects, those who can not sin. If you want to take with you only one lens this is the right one: it is good for both portraits and general photos, the millimeter and the constant f4 aperture guarantee good versatility, combined with a good autofocus, an excellent stabilizer and a very good sharpness, even at the edges from f5.6 upwards. Chromatic aberrations and distortion acceptable, and completely correctable in postproduction, surprisingly pleasant bokeh, perhaps also thanks to the 10 slats! Combined with the 5D Mark IV, and for now never again detached. Even if they weigh so much...! A full 9.

canon_5d_mark_ivCanon 5D Mark IV

Pros: Excellent ergonomics, construction, tropicalization, menu, viewfinder, autofocus, dynamic range, resolution, display, battery, 4K, canon log, dual SD and CF slots, reliability.

Cons: Lack of digital video stabilizer, ISO seal good but not in step, display not even partially adjustable, RAW slightly soft and requiring particular work in postproduction, perhaps the machine would have given the best of itself alongside the Digic 7 processor, marketed just after it.

Opinion: Finally I was able to combine the 80D with the much desired 5D Mark IV, an excellent SLR still today even if at least one stop back to the most recent Full Frame and Mirrorless as ISO seal, autofocus tracking, burst, operating speed and more. The machine is solid and reliable, excellent in everything and versatile. Excellent optical viewfinder and excellent touch display, you work well, jpeg files are ready like this and RAW are well workable. You have to learn to use it to the fullest, it has many functions, especially on autofocus, which allow the professional and the advanced amateur to always be able to set everything to the best, with the advantage of having an intuitive, accessible and practical menu, and of course many dedicated keys. The burst of 7 fps is enough in an all-rounder like her, as well as the autofocus more than good even for sports. I did not tolerate the lack of digital video stabilizer, present instead on 6D Mark II, too bad because the video department is certainly good also taking into account the Canon log ... The dynamic range is excellent, further improved compared to the Mark III, the ISO hold is very good but I expected a little more both at low and high ISO, also the RAW file is slightly softer and requires more work in post-production to revive it ... perhaps the machine would have given the best of itself alongside a more powerful processor like the Digic 7, marketed just after it, which would also have supported digital video stabilization. In any case, excellent car, it was immediately feeling and love. Very good in everything, particularly excellent in nothing, she is a professional all-rounder, reliable, and I recommend her to advanced amateurs and professionals. They had to implement the swivel display.

canon_50_f1-4Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

Pros: F2 sharpness, blur, contrast, construction, lightness, display with focus data.

Cons: Devastating chromatic aberrations at TA, poor sharpness from TA to f1.8, fast but not always reliable focus, back and front focus suffering that varies from specimen to specimen and camera body.

Opinion: An excellent fifty that, despite the old project, still defends itself well today. The yield varies slightly from one specimen to another, between sharpness and focus. In general, counting also the design in the distant 1993 and today's cost of € 400 new and € 200 used, has a good yield, excellent sharpness from f2 up, from f4 onwards it is very sharp and from f5.6 it is a blade from edge to edge, all with good blur and good colors. Fast focusing but not always reliable. Fortunately, my specimen still seems calibrated. I bought two used specimens as new by trial, then keeping the most recent construction, which turned out to be sharper and without the back and front focus. This specimen of mine, guessing the point of focus, at f1.4 / f1.6 is very soft and often with a nuanced and poetic effect, therefore usable for particular portraits (go and see my gallery to see what I mean). It took me some time to figure out how to exploit it well, but now I'm satisfied and it has entered my operating park. Recommended after careful analysis and testing!

canon_efs18-55_f4_5-6stmCanon EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM

Pros: Sharpness, construction, protective glass in the bayonet, zoom that finally extends into regular progression, silent and fast focus, excellent stabilizer.

Cons: If you know what you're buying, you can't find any unjustified cons for such an lens.

Opinion: Finally an 18-55 that surprises me! Crisp, compact, solid and functional. Lower chromatic aberration and distortion. The STM focus satisfied me, you can take the photos without worrying too much about using a 150€ lens. For family or amateur use it is more than fine, and since you do so much portraits with an 18-55, I would say that f4, however dark, is a value in this case. Taken new at 100€, tried and kept for personal pleasure.

canon_70-300is_usm_iiCanon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM II

Pros: Sharpness, blurry thanks to the 9 slats, contained chromatic aberrations, stunning focus, f4 from 70 to 75mm, lock button, data display, protective glass in the bayonet, compactness, robustness and design. Great value for money.

Cons: Not tropicalized, slightly soft and with some aberration around f4 and 70mm, but it is not even considered a counter to the price at which it is sold, and perhaps the stabilizer, good but not great, at least my specimen does not reach 4 stops.

Opinion: Lens with excellent value for money, compact and light, which despite the focal opening does not excel promises sharp photos and always in focus. Not tropicalized but with protective glass in the bayonet. Yield quite constant from 70 to 300mm, even at the edges. I use it on APS-C for birdlife, planes, sports, 70mm portraits and f4, and I'm pleasantly amazed. At this price you cannot ask for better!

canon_50_f1-8stmCanon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM

Pros: Light, compact, economical, sharp, almost absent distortion, good image even in backlight, focal and blurry opening, value for money

Cons: Lack of stabilizer, nonsensical 49mm diameter, hallucinatory chromatic aberrations at f1.8, too soft at TA, noisy autofocus, slow and often inaccurate and unusable with little light, and that after a few months begins to give problems of back and front focus, unreliable lens and unsuitable for slightly more dignified uses

Opinion: This fifty can not be missing in the optical park of a beginner or an amateur, it has an excellent value for money because despite having various limitations it is worth all its 130 euros. It is sharp, almost distortion-free, it returns a good blurr thanks to the f1.8, although to have less soft images and with less chromatic aberrations it is better to use it from f2 onwards, aberrations to f1.8 are hallucinatory, although perhaps varies from specimen to specimen. On the other, it is very light and compact. But man... I would have preferred to pay it 30 euros more but have at least reliable focus... it misses various blows even at f more closed, and I am forced to use the live view of my 80D which instead does not miss a shot. The focus is loud, slow, inaccurate and unreliable for portrait shooting and video shooting. The lack of the stabilizer is not a big flaw, but it could have come in very useful... And finally, I would say that because of only 7 slats, you can't expect a blurry at L-series levels, but hell, the blurry, especially at the edges, is very nervous, looks choppy and not blurry... this lens suited me when I started shooting, now for serious work I am inclined to switch to 35mm f2 IS USM and 85mm f1.4 IS USM L.

canon_efs18-135usmCanon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

Pros: Autofocus really very fast, precise and quiet, also suitable for video, stabilizer, presence of zoom lock keypad, general appreciable yield to be a handyman, images sufficiently sharp from f5.6 to 11.

Cons: Wide-angle distortion, weight an excessive but justified hair, not tropicalized with tendency to suck powder also due to the lack of glass in the bayonet, not very bright especially from half focal excursion onwards, flares and chromatic aberrations.

Opinion: New taken alongside the Canon 80D, finally a "kit all-rounder" lens appreciable unlike the basic and limited 18-55: this lens is a little more suitable both at the optical level and at the level of focal excursion with its 135 mm, and above all it is a bomb at the level of autofocus: the Nano USM is very precise, very fast and very quiet, therefore suitable for dynamic photos and also for videos, and usable even in the evening. Sharpness and overall yield are also appreciable for basic uses or afternoon outings, good from f5.6 to f11. Chromatic aberrations are everywhere, but especially at the edges, but with lightroom correction the photos are usable, the stabilizer is excellent and allows me to take freehand without moving up to 1/10 and without micromosso up to 1/15. Distortion, especially in wide angles, however, is its weak point combined with the tendency to suck powder. Ultimately it is a lens that for its versatility I love, and I use it as a handyman in the outings where I want to have fun shooting trains, landscapes and occasional photos without having to bring other lenses. For the band in which you place your vote is a full 8! Recommended to kit with machines such as 70D and 80D.

canon_80dCanon 80D

Pros: Beautiful, ergonomic, versatile and semi-tropicalized machine body, with touch and adjustable display, fast and precise focus also in live view thanks to the Dual Pixel AF, 100% viewfinder coverage, Full HD 60fps video, good burst and shutter up to 1/8000 and 1/250 with flash, defined sensor and with good dynamic range, ISO seal, excellent battery life. A good and optimized handyman compared to other APS SLRs, suitable for passionate amateur and handyman.

Cons: Plastics a little poor and sensitive to the rows, materials that can be improved but still that make up a robust and light body. Lack of auxiliary light, lack of 4K which I do not consider essential in a semi-pro body, but the digital stabilizer instead yes, which I would have preferred to find, as on the 90D, since they are machines with good video department.

Opinion: After many years of passion with compacts and smartphones, I decided to buy the famous Reflex, with which I am taking the real path as a photographer and videographer. After using an old 600D for 5 months to get used to the operation and technical parameters, I carefully chose to acquire the Canon 80D, new socket 679€. Full Frame I'll buy later. Very happy with the choice, as versatile, simple, reliable, almost complete, fun for its level, that is, for enthusiasts and for also use "semi pro". I use it for portraits, landscapes, photos at night, videos and daytime photos to moving subjects, and I always arrive at the end of the day as autonomy! The files have a very good dynamic range especially at low ISO, the iso seal is good to be an APS-C, for working shooting the photos are pleasant, excellent and quietly workable up to ISO 800, good and workable up to ISO 3200, then up to ISO 6400 which is practically its limit the sensor gives way too much so I do not push it further. Very pleasant the vivid screen, adjustable and touch, full of controls and settings directly accessible, and the wide viewfinder with 100% coverage. Also right the position of the main keys, it also has good audio microphones for videos, and the headphone jack. It lacks a few things that would have made it almost perfect for its category, such as the digital stabilizer in the videos and the auxiliary light. But it is a fun machine and suitable for amateur guys and advanced amateurs, also suitable for evening photos and daytime photos to moving subjects given the excellent DUAL PIXEL focus and good ISO seal. Professionals obviously have to rely on 5D mark 4 or other...
