Pros: Extreme versatility, effective stabilizer, good sharpness at all openings in the center

Cons: Chromatic aberrations anytime and anywhere if the contrasts are a bit strong, distortion at 18mm on the edges (recoverable in PP), sharpness drop at the edges

Opinion: Used for landscapes and city photography it performs well, especially from 24mm upwards. Too bad that the sharpness tends to get lost at the edges and that it is often coupled with chromatic aberrations, (almost) never very evident but still present and annoying. The images it returns, however, are interesting and give their best, in my experience, between f/8 and f/11. I miss to try the night photography to be able to try to exploit (unfortunately only at 18mm) the f / 3.5 which, all in all, guarantees a certain brightness.

Pros: Jack of all trades

Cons: Master of none

Opinion: This is the latest evolution of Canon's APS-C SLR lens kit. The thing that is immediately noticeable is the speed and precision of focusing, like the latest L-series lenses, as it equips the Nano USM system. Used with bodies with Dual Pixel, it is very reliable in tracking subjects, and can also be used for some sports shots. The image quality is what you can expect from a kit lens, so good but not great in apertures and focal lengths, and dropping at TA and in limit focal lengths. If well used and known, it returns sharp images and generally with a good microcontrast, but it is in the video shooting that it makes the best, having also been designed from the point of view of content creators. Without expecting cinematic levels, used for social content, vlogs and similar areas returns excellent shots, also assisted by the stabilizer. The "negative" sides (which are actually characteristics due to the fact that it is a non-specific kit lens) are obviously the brightness, the aperture that varies with the focal length and the build quality, good but that still does not return a feeling of solidity. Overall it was a very good lens, I deliberately use the past because currently despite the features there are currently preferable options in RF counterparts with related bodies.

Pros: Very good focal length range for an APS-C (sure, starting from 15mm ... Dreaming can you right?), light, compact, with a reasonable yield.

Cons: Both new and used still costs a lot, but with a single lens you do a bit of everything.

Opinion: I received it after returning the first version, the one marked simply "IS" and received from a seller who didn't even know what he was selling: this is another world. This model has autofocus, and the MAF is fast and silent even if sometimes it sticks a little and you have to press the shutter button two or three times to get the focus (it happened to me photographing a rapeseed field moved by the wind). It's dark, unfortunately it starts from 18mm and not 15mm, it's a bit plastic, but it still has a very useful range on APS-C, and allows you to do almost everything with a single lens. Accustomed to the FF with L-optics, the difference can be seen in everything, but this, together with the 50D, will allow me to go MTB (in his padded bag), and take home photos even on these occasions. Edit after the first close-up session with the 50D: used to doing close-up with either the Canon 100L or the Canon 28-300L, the difference in use is "remarkable". When the subject is at the limit of the minimum distance of MAF and there is a little air to move the flowers, the AF is no longer effective: it often sticks and cannot focus, and you have to try several times. The only one is to move away about ten cm and then it starts working well again. This could also depend on the AF module of the 50D, but when I wrote it was the only APS-C I owned. Edit after taking an 80D instead of the 50D: AF much faster and more accurate, even in close-up. The uncertainties seen with the 50D disappear with subjects at normal distances, and are greatly reduced in close-up, it is possible that the remaining hesitations depend on subjects below the minimum distance of MAF (I have not measured with the meter).

Pros: All-rounder lens with excellent focal range

Cons: Not very bright and not very sharp

Opinion: Rating 6. This lens disappointed me slightly because I was expecting better image quality. It is definitely a comfortable lens for travel, although it weighs a little too much for my taste. I sold it after a year of use, in 2018 because I switched to mirrorless from Sony and Pansonic. I never regretted the choice.

Pros: Good focal excursion - (almost) all-rounder - fast- good sharpness

Cons: lacks lampshade - limited brightness (3.5 - 5.6) but understandable, proportionate to price

Opinion: I use it mainly in the mountains but I had the opportunity to use it also on the road and solves most situations. the sharpness is appreciable despite not being an L-series lens. It has a considerable weight but is understandable for the type of optics. It has a good stabilization and for me that I take it to the mountains is indispensable (difficult to carry an easel for hours...) - Maybe it distorts a little to the extreme wide angle but you have to consider that it is not a specific goal. Overall in my opinion it deserves a "9" vote
