Reviews of cameras, lenses, tripods, heads and other accessories written by S_m_art

nikon_d4sNikon D4s

Pros: File quality, high ISO, always correct exposure, AF accuracy, white balance, aesthetics. General balance.

Cons: AF speed and sensitivity outclassed by later flagships.

Opinion: The most beautiful Nikon DSLR ever. A great balance that, it seems to me, I have never used, the subsequent flagships no longer have: certainly much improved on the AF side, however, they would seem to have a less satisfactory sensor. I have seven other Nikon DSLRs, admittedly lower class, but only she always exposes correctly, always focuses correctly, and so on. Certainty of the result. As soon as the opportunity arises (before I had the double D700, now I have the double Df), I buy a second one.

nikon_afs300_f4pfNikon AF-S 300mm f/4 E PF ED VR

Pros: Light.

Cons: Dear; Chinese plate; blurry nervous; AF not very fast; Problem VR.

Opinion: The cons are very many for me, compared to only one pro: the lens is surprisingly light. This makes it the ultimate weapon where you want to shoot birds in flight: the inertia is so low that you can change direction, framing, in a millisecond. The many faults pass into the background if the maneuverability is just what we are looking for, and he has no rivals in this. The AF is not very fast but only good used smooth, it gets worse a bit with the TC14E3 (Mansurov supports the opposite), and a lot with TC17E2. I have not yet had the courage to try it with the TC20E3.rnNo despite what has been said so far, I am very satisfied with the purchase and I highly recommend it to those looking for manageability. I struggled a little to understand its character, and at first I was even disappointed. But now ... I would buy it again! I use it on D500.

nikon_d200Nikon D200

Pros: Tough but still light; sensor for sharpness and color neutrality that is still valid; low price in the used.

Cons: Sensor for high iso yield and readability of the highlights decidedly outdated; display too small and with cumbersome magnifying procedure; AF little evolved.

Opinion: The review refers to what it is today and not what the D200 was. A machine still valid for low iso photos (max 600-800), so to be carried on a field trip (as long as there is a lot of light) with little regard (given the palious value and given the robustness). In that range the CCD sensor gives sexier images (color neutrality and feeling sharpness) than, I know, to a D700, and as the isos grow the grain has an "analog" look that returns vintage-flavored images. But, precisely, as the isos grow, the yield decays dramatically, and the D200 only makes sense for specific uses and as a second (or fifth, in my case) body. Use it with great satisfaction with 18-35/1.8 in bright situations (where it bowls better images than the D700 with 24-70 Nikkor). In summary: to have as a secondary body (as the first body recommended only to extravagant and aware photographers, or hopelessly penniless but not content with a toy) for the particular rendering of the sensor.

nikon_24-70g_f2-8Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 G ED

Pros: Sharpness good, fast and accurate AF, blurred interesting, punchy colors.

Cons: High price, poor build quality to price, heavy, cumbersome.

Opinion: I use it for a year (paid, again, Nikon, a folly). And 'undoubtedly an object professional work, no frills, that never leaves you on foot. For what it costs him want more robust, but otherwise is fine. I do not share the opinion of those who make it a myth (the magical triad!): A zoom, heck !, and a compromise (to have the highest quality we want fixed!); but honestly does his job (landlines Sigma Art, instead, while optically sensational, they do almost never saw their AF dancer - just to give an example). For my fleet (D40, D200, D700, D700, Df) do not feel the need to zoom the sharpest photographs and X-rays do. Used for what should be used (no landscape, there it takes the sharpness of a fixed; nothing architecture, there it takes the low distortion of a drive), or in the reportage, the street (not for photographers timid, though), is perfect.
