Cons: Noticeable drop in sharpness, combined with the Nikon TC-14E III in distances greater than 9m.
Opinion: This lens is simply my favorite of all those I have used. It's not the best, but it's so convenient to use!
I use it relentlessly since its purchase.
On FX, it allows portrait and street events for details. On DX, it allows the sport and the animal. On DX + TC-14E III, it covers the birds, although a little short and it loses 1 Diaph.
Regarding the sharpness, I would say that it depends on several factors. From 1m40 to 3m, in proxy mode, with or without TC-14E III, on FX or DX, it's "Razor Sharp". And it's amazing to be able to photograph flying insects with such ease. (see my gallery)
From 3m to 9m, according to my many tests, it is excellent, but especially without the TC-14E III, because with, the loss of sharpness is in my opinion quite noticeable. From 9m to 25m (but this is only my experience in the field), it becomes more average, because I think the image is significantly degraded by the multiplier. At the infinite, even a castle in clear weather for example, with multiplier, I would be much more critical on the quality of the image rendered.
Of course, an AF setting is to consider and can really make the difference. (for me: D500 + 300PF + TC -1.4 = +6 AF).
In comparison, I think that the AF adjustment of the Sigma by the dock is much more interesting, because it takes into account at least 4 key distances (16 for a zoom).
Regarding the stabilizer, I find it very effective until 1/200. But it depends on each photographer and his ability not to add unnecessary shaking. ;)
In conclusion, I would say that I find it EXTRAORDINARY.
However, if you want to photograph small birds, make sure you have an approach as discreet as possible, because mounted on DX with multiplier X1.4, it gives 630mm, fully usable freehand ... but it is a bit short :(
Opinion: Recently purchased this lens as a welcome addition to my much heavier 300mm F/2.8 VR. I love this lens on either an APS-C or a fullframe camera. It's so much fun carrying a 300mm lens that weighs about the same as a 24-70mm F/2.8. IQ is great when stopped down a bit. When shooting wide open there is little DOF to work with.
The 300mm seems to handle the 1.4 TC pretty well. When making use of the limiter there is not muching slowing down on the AF-speed. My 300mm lens seems to do best wide open (F/6.7) when using the 1.7 TC. In really low light situations I will still be using the much faster 300mm F/2.8 lens, but this beauty comes to use in almost every other situation.

Cons:Chromatic Aberrations (Dominant Magenta too often present), Not too Sharp
Opinion:I used this lens for a year, I will have taken about 10000 photos, it was used by hand, in Italy and abroad. The lens is great, although a bit expensive, the sharpness is not comparable to the old 300mm F/4 (which is much higher) and of course does not come close to the 300mm f/2.8. If you mount the TC14 III the sharpness worsens. The AF is very good and quiet. One of the Pros of this lens is the weight, I took it by hand at very low speeds and got perfect photos, this both thanks to the weight itself and the VR (uneven performance). The minimum focal distance is definitely a strength, it is obviously not a macro but it is more than great for close ups pushed. The Chromatic Aberrations are almost always present in difficult light conditions, almost always distinguishing a dominant magenta very annoying. I switched to this lens from 200-500 and I have to say that at af speed there is no comparison of course (F/4 against F/5.6), but it belongs this and the lightness I see no other merits, I find the 200-500 much sharper (then with CT there is no history). I went up to 300mm 2.8. For those who can afford to pair it with other lenses I absolutely recommend it, otherwise I recommend to look at other (old 300mm F/4, 200-500, 500 PF if you want something light).
Opinion:Okay, he's a plasticone, and he's not the best kind either. Okay, it's not as sharp as the deadly f 2.8 VR2 while being very good overall. However, it remains the only 300 in the world so light and truly portable with remarkable optical quality. The fact remains that the engine of the 2.8 AF is far from eternal (indeed...), while that of the previous AFS f4 model is openly voted suicide since it is part of the series of 28-70, 17-35 etc., which is all to say. The onboard stabilizer works wonders, trying to believe. The lampshon of our PF is instead a half-key, very light, even the plastic flexes. However, this 300 PF remains a unicum and, if the exosive price does not scare you, it turns out to be a very good purchase!
Cons:Maybe the blurred is a little nervous (especially with tc1.4) and the yield in the backlight but just hold it in your hand to forget everything. Cost a little excessive.
Opinion:When I first picked it up without the lampshade it seemed like a joke. Very light and very small. For travel and excursions is ideal. Pairing it with tc 1.4 and the D500 you carry around everywhere (I sometimes carry it around when I let the dog out??) a focal point of 600mm equivalent and also stabilized. It has some webbing but remains optically very good smooth and very good with the tc1.4. Positive note is the minimum distance of maf which makes it an "almost" macro. A must have for naturalistic photography with Nikon.
