canon_135_f2Canon EF 135mm f/2.0 L USM

Pros: excellent sharpness and contrast, very pleasing bokeh, solid construction, comparatively low price

Cons: no weather sealing, small AF switches

Opinion: This lens is one of the best Canon L prime lenses below 200mm. Image quality is excellent, with very high sharpness wide open and incredible sharpness from f2.5 onwads! Colors and contrast are also excellent and the rendered bokeh is one of the best and harmonic bokehs you will find in this focal range. AF is extremely fast and very accurate - it is one of my lenses with the best "in focus" hit rate! Construction is solid but with tiny AF switches, no weather sealing and a little outdated lenshood witch is a little hard to install (rough-running thread). Compared to its excellent image quality the price is comparatively low!

canon_70-200_f2-8_v2Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM

Pros: excellent image quality even wide open, very accurate and fast AF, build like a tank, very effective image stabilizer

Cons: large, heavy, expensive

Opinion: Despite its high price the upgrade form the non-IS version or version I of the IS-model is worth the money. The image quality is great, tack sharp and with high contrast throughout the zoom range, even wide open. AF ist blazingly fast and accurate. The new lens hood design (with release knob and structured finish) is very appealing. The IS is somewhat noisy (especially when it starts working) but works excellent. The construction is outstanding: full metal body, no extending tubes, weather sealed (the non-IS has no weather sealing). Also very usefull is the reduced minimum working distance of only 120cm. Weight and price are high, but there is no other 70-200 zoom that can keep up with this excellent lens.

canon_85_f1-2_v2Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L II USM

Pros: Best bokeh: creamy, soft, with large out-of-focus circles, brilliant contrast and colors, very good sharpnes

Cons: Large, heavy and expensive. Electronically driven focus, so you can't adjust the focus when the camera is turned off. Filmsy lenshood, turns while manual focussing the lens, large rear lens element can easily be scratched when mounting the lens, very slow AF for a USM lens.

Opinion: This lens provides brilliant contrast and colors, and very good sharpnes. Even wide open the images are sharp and by f2 the sharpness is very high. Since it is large and heavy and since its AF ist comparatively slow, working with this lens is not always easy but the results are stunning! The lens hood can be easily mounted (clip on) but it is a little thin and flimsy and it rotates with the lens front when used in manual focus mode. The electronically driven focus requires you to connect the lens to a powered camera to be able to change the focus manually (typically when you want to retreat the extended front tube before packing the lens in a bag). The large rear glass element of the lens is unprotected an can be easily scratchen when mounting the lens on the camera.

canon_50_f1-2Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM

Pros: Pleasing and soft bokeh (rounded aperture blades), very good contast and colors, solid construction, not too heavy, good and usable image quality even wide open, very good and sharp at f/2. The only 50mm lens with f/1.2 (but that's only 1/3 stop brighter than f/4) ;-)

Cons: Very expensive (compared to other brands), not as sharp as newer constructions form Sigma, visible reddish CAs (but that's part of its typical image look)

Opinion: much better and sharper than I expected since its image quality was criticised in many tests and forums. Of all Canon 50mm lenses this is by far the sharpest lens between open aperture and f2! With its high contrast, vivid colors and its pleasing bokeh (rounded aperture blades) it delivers very harmonic images. My most used lens for indoor available light photography since I purchased it in 2010. AF is fast but a little slower then most other USM L-Lenses. Solid constuction with weather sealing (if used with filter). But a very expensive lens. Today the new Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART lens could be the better choice (even sharper and less expensive).

canon_16-35_f4isCanon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM

Pros: very sharp even wide open, solid constuction, helpfull IS low price for such a great Canon L lens!

Cons: none.... the small lens hood will not give much protection but that's typical for most wide angel zooms

Opinion: By far the sharpest of all Canon wide angel zooms! Solid construction and image stabilizer will make this gerat lens a real bargain! Visibly sharper in the image corners at 16mm than the 16-35 2.8 L II on full frame and way much better than the 17-40L that had mushy and soft corners form 17-20mm even at f11 (f4 or f5.6 was unusable soft from 17 to 20mm on two copies of the 17-40 I used some years ago)

canon_24-70_v2Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM II

Pros: very sharp even wide open on all focal lengths, high contrasts, solid construction, reliable and fast AF

Cons: expensive, heavy, large 82mm filter thread, vignetting at 24mm (can be easily corrected in postprocessing). Compared to the old design of its predecessor the short lens hood can't provide much protection.

Opinion: The sharpest standard zoom for full frame. Brilliant colors and contrast. Expensive and heavy but the produced images are outstanding. AF hit rate is nearly 100%, fast and reliable. Compared to the old design of its predecessor (with its 'inverse' zooming) the short lens hood can't provide much protection. The 82mm filter thread may introduce additional costs for new larger filters.

canon_tse90Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8

Pros: Solid construction, extremely sharp even wide open, high contrast, no distortion visible, no CAs

Cons: none ... you can't expect autofocus on a tilt shift lens... Shifting will not produce the dramatic results you may know from wide angel tilt shift lenses with their wide field of view since this is a longer focal length. But the main field of application for this lens will be the tilt feature anyway :)

Opinion: One of the sharpest lenses in the Canon lineup. Great performance even wide open with high contrast and no visible distortion or CAs. Solid construction, short minimum focus distance possible. So with additional extension tubes the lens can be used as a macro lens with great performance (e.g.: 0.6x magnification with 25mm extension tube). The tilt feature and the focal length makes this lens the ideal lens for product photography!
