![]() | Patona Protect EN-EL18D Pros: Excellent durability, substantially equal to the original. Used on Z9 Cons: After a year of honorable service, she was suddenly no longer recognized, neither by the charger nor by the body Opinion: I've always had a discordant relationship with Patona: excellent batteries in terms of durability and compatibility, but a couple of compatible Fuji Np-W126s have swelled, and in particular this compatible Nikon En-El18D, bought for Z9, went perfectly for about a year. Then, suddenly, it was no longer recognized by the charger or by the body. I tried several systems, but there was nothing to do... sent on February 07, 2025 |
![]() | Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.4 G Pros: Magic, three-dimensionality, depth and detachment of planes; bokeh; Colors; incarnated; Portability and agility Cons: AF not very fast or accurate on the first shot; sharpness at ta not great; Purple fringing visible in critical shooting conditions Opinion: I came from D, whose soft and mellow bokeh I loved, but which with focus sometimes made me miss precious shots. So I decided to switch to G. It is not an "easy" lens: sharpness at full aperture is sometimes critical, just as purple fringing appears critical in certain shooting conditions (subject in full backlight against a window or light source). The AF is not very fast, even on Z9 (and FtZ) it sometimes shows difficulties. But if you get the shot right, it gives images with full colors but at the same time soft and realistic, with dreamy atmospheres thanks to the magic of three-dimensionality and the detachment of the planes. Many and many times I have been undecided whether to sell it and take the Art, of which I hear very good things, but... In the end, I can't tear myself away from it. sent on January 04, 2024 |
![]() | Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Pros: Stratospheric sharpness already at 1.4, beautiful bokeh, three-dimensionality and detachment of planes Cons: Weight & Size Opinion: It's worth its weight in gold. And it weighs, damn if it weighs. And that's huge for a 105, with pitch filters of the same size. Difficult to carry around, if not inside his bag. Give the gift of magical shots and dreamlike portraits. It's probably the best lens I have (and I have several). I've used it on many Nikon SLRs (D800-810-850, D4, D5) and now on Z9: it's very fast in Af, and even very fast (even faster than some Nikon F lenses...) in locking on to the human eye. The transition from F-bodies to Z-bodies (with FtZ) has even benefited him. A must, for portraiture, if you are not afraid of weight and size. sent on January 03, 2024 |
![]() | Nikon Z 14-30mm f/4 S Pros: Sharpness, wide focal range, colors, resistance to stray lights Cons: A bit dark, perhaps. But it is not felt in real use Opinion: Taken a few days ago, thanks to an offer and "zero rate" installments. It is my first Z, so far I had always used the F with the FtZ: as wide-angle zooms, I used the 17-35 f2.8 and the 14-24 f2.8. And the latter - as we know - is stratospheric. But I must say that this 14-30 - as the first Z - left me speechless: exceptional sharpness (on Z9) even at F4, even at 14mm. Of course, a bit sorry not to have more f2.8, but the 14-24Z seemed to me a redundancy of the F, and the 17-28 is not S, and has focal range a bit curtain. So, thanks to the offer, I threw myself on 14-30, passing over its being f4, imagining I could use it from f5.6 upwards. Instead, already at f4 it is exceptional. It is said that the corners are not so good: to me they seem sufficiently valid, in everyday use. Flare resistance is very good. But the colors, full, alive, real, are the thing that amazed me most in a favorable sense. From a purely technical point of view, the lens is also compact and above all very light. In addition, it accepts normal screw filters, and this, for a wide angle that goes down to 14, is extraordinary (even if they are 82mm, not really cheap). It is collapsible, and the body warns you if you have not "opened" (i.e. extended) it. The focus ring can be customized by body: it can control the aperture or exposure correction at your choice. In short, for a test of the first days, I am fully satisfied. sent on March 10, 2023 |
![]() | Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Pros: absurdly sharp, beautiful, makes you fall in love Cons: nothing Opinion: The optics to have, if you prefer zoom to fixed. It has an absurd sharpness and microcontrast, beautiful, stratospheric, unmissable. It is so sharp that it does not even suffer from Tc, it works perfectly with the Tc20 as well and you get a 400mm f5.6. Supernitid. The bokeh is also beautiful, soft and regular, albeit from zoom (it can not compete with that of some fixed as the 105 2 / DC). It is also sufficiently compact and light and is easily carried with it, compared to the first Vr counterparts. Agile: it is short and above all the zoom is internal, so it does not "stretch". Used on D5, D850 and now Z9, it has instant and accurate Af. The price is high, but it is a professional lens, which always ensures the result. To be used with caution because it is addictive. sent on February 07, 2023 |
![]() | Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6 E ED VR Pros: versatility; Super VR; sharpness; constant diaphragm; tripod collar; price that makes it unmissable, especially on used Cons: heavy, long, uncomfortable, does not hold up very well the TC Opinion: I bought it used, complete with tc 14eII, at a price that I would call almost ridiculous, and it was practically brand new, it had almost never taken. It's my first 500mm: first I used for birdlife and photo hunting the 70-200 2.8 FL with tc (14, 17, 20), then I found this and I took it. The sharpness is not at the level of 70-200 fluorite, also duplicated, but for the price it has it is fine. Smooth the sharpness is very good, even if at 500mm it drops a little. It does not suffer from aberration. Excellent fact of having a constant diaphragm, unlike others; F5.6 is however a bit "dark", and must be used in good light. The VR is nothing short of spectacular, perhaps the best I have ever tried (even in comparison to that of fluorite), 5 stops of recovery are safe and this is fine considering that the diaphragm is 5.6. It's very heavy, long (when extended) and uncomfortable: I wouldn't take it up and down a mountain, but it's good for photo hunting from stalking in the swamp with tripod, for example. The Af is extraordinary, fast and accurate and does not lose the subject: I used it on D5, D850 and Z9 and on the latter in particular it is further improved. It suffers a bit from the Tc. It should be considered that on Dslr, for the Af, you can only use the Tc14 (it becomes an f8 in practice), otherwise with Tc17 and Tc20 it starts to go to the ball; on Ml instead you can use all, as far as the Af is concerned. To get maximum sharpness, however, it is better not to exasperate. Although, considering that the Tc20, becomes a "1000mm", maybe you can pass over it... sent on February 07, 2023 |
![]() | Nikon Z9 Pros: all: AF, file quality, high iso nr, ergonomics Cons: It must be known thoroughly to take full advantage of it. Someone could "frighten" weight and price. But it's a flagship Opinion: Purchased now a couple of weeks ago, after long and thorough evaluations, and an interminable wait. I state that I come from D5 and D850, I sold them both to make room for the newcomer (and even before I had D4 and the generation of D800-810). The Af capabilities are extraordinary, compared to DSLRs, and are absolutely reliable: it is able to "capture" the eye of a bird, at a distance of photographic hunting, and never leave it. Incredible 3D tracking. Ditto the speech also for the human eye, even if the subject moves quickly. Perfect and total compatibility with Ftz II adapter with optics with previous F mount, as long as they are equipped with an internal Af motor (Af-S series): many of those I have are "reborn": the Af is faster and more precise. Endless customization possibilities, at the level of Af controls, at the level of customization of the keys, at the level of file characteristics. The jpegs are already perfect as they are born from the machine, and for the raw there is no story, manageable in every detail (but you need ssd, processors and high-performance graphics cards and a good dose of ram). Very good noise management high Iso, in my opinion also at the level of that of the D5, if not superior, and excellent recovery of shadows. Fabulous ergonomics, which preserves the scheme of the DSLR flagships with some changes due to the adjustable LCD screen (the first, on a flagship). The LCD is perfectly visible, even in bright sunlight and the movement capabilities cover every need. The viewfinder is huge, bright and responsive, practically lag-free. It no longer even has the mechanical shutter, they have also removed that, in addition to the mirror, which implies the fact that it has no "sounds" to the shot, which at first leaves perplexing. But it is the future. Coming from DSLR, it takes a period of adaptation to get to know it thoroughly and take full advantage of it. sent on February 07, 2023 |
