pentax645_fa80-160Pentax 645 FA 80-160mm f/4.5

Pros: Construction, fast and accurate AF, useful travel, optical quality, PRICE on used

Cons: Heavy

Opinion: The best buy I never expected to meet. Purchased for less than $ 200 on ebay, it is one of the best lenses that have ever passed through my hands, it seems absurd thinking about what I spent on Canon. It has an important weight but balances very well with the body. The quality at closed apertures is top on a sensor like that of the 645z, despite being a legacy lens of the film system. I have to do some tests in my own way, but it seems that it does not lose focus zooming, the confirmation is instantaneous at the time of pressing the button. So if it's not parfocal, it's very close to us.

pentax_smc645_55_f2-8Pentax 645 SMC D FA 55mm f/2.8 AL IF SDM AW

Pros: Optical quality, compactness, excellent construction, tropicalized, very smooth, precise and silent AF (although it does not disturb the noise to me, the result is noteworthy).

Cons: Slow AF, much slower than the FA I got to use on 645z, but it does its duty. FAs are very "snappy", in a way that I did not expect on a system of this type. A minor and very subjective counter... I prefer optics with the aperture ring (they are also adaptable).

Opinion: An excellent (really) low-cost lens. I was amazed by the optical quality absolutely at the height of the sensor of the 645z. Very compact, on this beats only the 75mm, a real pancake. A normal par excellence, very sharp at full opening. If you shoot in the studio I would recommend the zooms, qualitatively excellent even if older, much faster in focusing (I can speak for the 45-85 and 80-160), more versatile but very heavy. Ideal this 55mm so if you want to play with the depth of field traveling light and without fearing too much the weather, given the tropicalization.

pentax_645zPentax 645Z

Pros: Image quality, ergonomics, excellent and economical legacy lenses, fast focusing with FA lenses, general AF accuracy, best buy to date (2023). Especially if you already own a Pentax 645 kit, but given the costs it can be convenient in any case.

Cons: Heavy, but not too much. System apparently abandoned by Pentax with some modern optics that remain very expensive. Official tethering software no longer for sale on the new and sometimes capricious, I have yet to understand its real reliability.

Opinion: Great machine, the files resemble 6x7 slide drum scans. Relatively quick in use, very comfortable, excellent focus, lenses that if you know them you love them. At the cost of a medium-high range full-frame body you make a medium format CMOS kit, I do not know if I explain. The natural alternative is GFX with its many advantages, perhaps some defects, but much higher costs, especially at the level of lenses (and if you go on top-of-the-range bodies). One of the great things about Pentax is that with a unique kit you work in digital and on film. The adapted 6x7 lenses maintain the confirmation of focus, rational and functional camera. Tropicalization and exceptional ISO are well known, the absence of a joystick I find it a lesser evil because you are naturally encouraged to focus & recompose, the focus points are piled up in the center. I will update the review later.

canon_16-35_f4isCanon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM

Pros: All. Quality, efficiency, price.

Cons: Thinking that F4 is not enough (wrongly)

Opinion: An optics that I have owned for many years now and that lies behind the performance of a flagship. The AF is never wrong, the stabilizer is super effective, the image quality is fixed (indeed, better than many fixed if we go to see). It was cheap at the time for an L series and today it will cost even less. If you need a wide angle with the dynamism of using a zoom you can't go wrong. And moreover it also has an excellent transmittance to be an F4, it is much brighter than the old 24-105 IS.

canon_15_fisheyeCanon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye

Pros: Optical quality, sharpness, price, size

Cons: It is addictive. Ugly lock ring for manual focus that moves between the fingers loose (a non-problem)

Opinion: Purchased after mulling over it a lot of time and almost without experience with fisheye (I only own another one for 6x7, used very few times), it damn amazed me for all its good qualities. I'm at a stage where the wider the better, I use it to photograph people. I was struck by how it can be used profitably, being very careful, obtaining very natural results in shots where perspective correction would do worse damage than fisheye curvature: often it is enough to compensate for the crushing at the edges to have a wonderful yield and an infinite angle of view. And if you want a super ultra wide just click in the LR profile corrections and here are just perfect lines. Neesun ultra wide is simple to use, you have to understand the optimal distances and shooting conditions, with 16mm it was the same. Here it is more complex in some ways but perhaps also more exciting. Get a fisheye!
