Reviews of cameras, lenses, tripods, heads and other accessories written by Antonio Desiderio 1984

olympus_e410Olympus E-410

Pros: Dimensions, weight, olympus color rendering, live view, today's used price.

Cons: dynamic range, 3 AF points (depending on the case), low resolution of the display, a bit cumbersome in the use in live view, optical park (but here a reasoning must be made).

Opinion: Initially intrigued by the E-300 model, not finding an agreement with the seller, I opted for this model. Purchased in November 2022 for 150 euros, complete with all packaging, box 2 kit lenses (14-42 and 40-150) and 4GB CF memory, really a ridiculous amount for a photographic tool. What can I say... I was pleasantly surprised, especially for the rendering of the Olympus colors. The size is also a strong point of this camera, which although SLR, is just bigger than a mirrorless (it is not much bigger than my X-T1). Of course, there are some defects, especially given by age. Things like the display and AF, are those of a camera of 15 years ago, nevertheless it still lets itself be used. The dynamic range instead, compared to other models of the same period is a bit lacking, especially in the recovery of highlights. So in high contrast situations, it is best to operate with multiple exposures where possible. The only 3 AF points can be a limit, but more for dynamic genres. On more static genres such as landscape, you don't particularly feel the limit. Excellent thing the fact of having the live view, just a pity that in use it is a bit cumbersome. That is, you can not have the grid and the histogram on display, but once in live view you have a sort of 4 predefined sequential modes. The first with all the info, where you can set the iso, AF mode, WB, etc; another with the grill; one with the histogram; one for focus picking. And being these in sequence, if I am using focus picking and I want to return to the histogram, I can not go directly, but I have to go forcibly, for the other 2 modes that are there before. Yes... In the end just click 3 times a button, nothing transcendental, but it remains a bit annoying. Another point, which could be negative is that of the optical park. Yes, because for mount 4/3, there are not many optics to choose from, and being a little widespread system, there is also little availability of the most valuable optics. But here a certain reasoning must be made, in my opinion I strongly doubt, that today someone can buy these cameras, to make them his main kit. Rather those like me will buy them, they enjoy using the old digital and collecting them and I can guarantee you that already the kit lenses, although they are plastics, still have a more than decent photographic yield. If you also add a 70-300, which you can easily find for figures under 200 euros, you have a photo set, which covers an equivalent focal length from 28mm to 600mm and that allows you to have fun doing a bit of everything. In conclusion, like most old cameras, it remains a tool for conscious users. Nevertheless, it allows you to have great satisfactions.

Pros: Ergonomics; zeiss optics; image quality; manual zoom; build quality; use with external power supply; Today's price

Cons: In some aspects he feels the weight of the years (see review)

Opinion: Intrigued by a video on YouTube, in December 2020 I bought this old camera. What can I say?.... I was pleasantly surprised. Despite the "only" 10.3 MPX manages to create really amazing files, despite being a hole of 2005. This is partly due to the excellent zeiss optics with which it is equipped, and the CMOS sensor in APS-C format. You can make prints of 30x45 format really enjoyable, and it is not a problem to go further. The ergonomics are really good! In spite of its particular appearance, which you may like or not (it drives me crazy), it falls very well in the hand and lets itself be used with pleasure. It does not skimp on buttons, wheels, and joysticks, to adjust all the parameters. I find it great that zooming, unlike most bridges, is manual and not electronic. This gives a more "real camera" feeling, and also allows you to switch more quickly from one focal length to another. The display is another peculiarity of this camera. Placed in the upper part, totally adjustable, and which can be used in "cockpit type" mode. Which makes it convenient, the use of the machine in lowered positions. Also interesting is the fact that it can be used, while it is connected to an external power supply, something that many newer cameras do not have. The build quality does not disappoint! Although the body is made of plastic materials, in the hand it conveys a sense of great solidity, and the weight of almost 1kg, makes you realize that you have a real camera in your hand instead of a toy. Excellent also the readiness of ignition. As soon as it turns on it is ready to shoot. Obviously it's not all pink and flowers .... We always talk about a camera that has its age, although, it has not aged badly at all.... The result of the EVF and the display are inadequate nowadays, if the display is just enough, the EVF is to be used only if strictly necessary. The iso seal is that of a room of almost 20 years ago '.... Above 800 iso it is better not to push. The operating speed is also what it is.... Especially in long exposures you have to wait a bit before you can shoot again. However, considering today's price (it is easily found at just over 100 euros), it is worth buying, even just out of curiosity. Especially if we consider that only the optics that mount, would be worth much more than what the hole chamber costs. But also for the historical value... In fact, this was the first bridge with Aps sensor, the first camera with a CMOS to work live view and also has other records that I do not remember now. In fact, it can be said that it was the forerunner of today's mirrorless. It's just a pity that this was not followed by a newer model. If sony produced a camera similar to this, with its current technologies, I think it would be a spectacular all-in-one, but they will never produce it, so I will continue to enjoy this one....
