sony_fe24-70gm_iiSony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II

Pros: Sharpness, almost no flare, lightning-fast AF, aperture ring, blurry at 2.8

Cons: Lens hood a bit cumbersome to assemble, it costs a lot

Opinion: Premise: Landscape photos. I took this zoom because before I only used a 14-24 2.8, a 70-200 f4 and a fixed 40mm, so it was an intermediate zoom to be used as an all-rounder, since in certain adventures it became necessary to have only one lens with me. Then I also wanted to take it to have a GM and make the most of the car which is an a7rIV, or at least I thought that way it would make the most of it. For now, I have to say that I'm satisfied (and fortunately, given the cost!). I've used it on some adventures in the mountains, in the snow, at sunset, and during the day! The sharpness is really at high levels, at the edges it doesn't seem to change too much the performance in the maximum and minimum zoom values, which is important as I often use it at 24, and very often at 70, using a little less the intermediate steps. The build quality is great, although being less heavy than the sigma 14-24 I have, it almost feels more plasticky! Surely it's just a feeling given by the weight. In any case, 200 grams less is an advantage in the mountains! Actually, the general impression is this: A PERFECT optics, which consequently, in order to be such, renounces some characteristics that for example are typical of Sigmas to obtain a personality. However, this is not a defect, it is a measuring instrument more than a musical instrument, it captures the light with fidelity and precision, without enriching and coloring, what it does it does perfectly, in the maximum possible yield :)

sony_a7r_ivSony A7r IV

Pros: Tolerable noise even above 3000 ISO. Truly precise and sharp pixels, spectacular sensor as color rendering and extreme precision. Better dynamic range than the A7R3 (which was great anyway). Now you can recover both lights and shadows, more tolerable recovery shadows than lights. Improved ergonomics compared to the R3. Improved tropicalization, there are more gaskets than the previous one. "Chubby" buttons.

Cons: Needless to say, the files weigh up to 120-130MB in uncompressed RAW, however it cannot be a "cons" of this machine, at most a con of this category of big-MegaPixel. Many say that the battery does not last long, in truth it seems to me superimposable to the duration of the R3 that I had until recently, and it seems to me an acceptable duration. Absence of shutter closure when the machine is off to change lenses without the sensor remaining exposed. The usual sony menus with Abbr. Imp. D. Capir. For some, the fact that the screen is not as articulated as the most recent, but frankly it does not bother me.

Opinion: Before I had the A7R3 which I really liked. Then I switched to this model with the idea of increasing the resolution to be able to make larger prints. I take landscape photos in 99% of cases and print so many in sizes equal to or greater than 60cm long side. To keep 300dpi in print, with 61mpx I can now reach even 80-90cm long side. Considerations: What really changes between the R3 and R4 is the quality of the sensor and its resolution. Everything else is really very similar to the previous one, and the remaining differences are mostly goodies, such as the buttons that have been enlarged. It sounds like but now pressing them is easier even with snow gloves. The sensor instead no, that has really changed, it is much more resolute, 19mpx more, but not only ... The quality between this and the previous one, both as precision of pixels and as dynamic range, I was able to appreciate it for real by comparing my shots of a month ago with those of now. After all, this Sony sensor (IMX455AQK) is currently in use on other machines in the same category, such as the 61mpx Sigma FP, while rumors say that it may have been selected for the future Leica. The same sensor is maintained in the A7RV where the quality is the same as this. That said, I was undecided whether to switch to this or to the RV, however for the kind of photos I do I considered it unnecessary to have the AI on the autofocus, the only thing that really seems stupid to me that the RIV does not have is the closure of the curtain during optical replacement. Machine of the highest quality, approved for landscape use and beyond.

dji_mini3proDJI Mini 3 Pro

Pros: Really easy to use safely. Convenience of transportation. Image quality at the maximum of what the size of its camera can make. Smart features.

Cons: To be so light, the photos have limitations clearly due to the small size of the gimbal, however the quality is comparable to a good Sony compact of 2022.

Opinion: I took this drone very recently, before I would never have taken such a thing. A bit 'because I would have taken a mavic and then I would have been afraid to "crash" a camera from 2000 € and a little' because anyway for the kind of photos I do, the bulk is very important. Until the Mavic mini 2 was not worth it. This Mini 3 pro is truly "pro" in 249g. I keep it comfortably in my hiking backpack and I can also use it in a mountaineering outing where carrying too much weight is very inconvenient. The photos are generated in DNG and JPEG format, with a very high resolution but which is certainly not comparable to a mirrorless one. However, the quality is clearly in line with the compacts with similar sensor, the colors and details are excellent and if you do not exaggerate with the size, they are also printable with excellent results. The duration of the flight with a battery is about 30 min real (already at 20% it is better to return it to the ground). The smart features, such as tracking, automatic movies, panoramas etc are really nice and easy to use. The videos in 4k are made very well, fluid and with great detail. The anti-collision sensors available to it are very effective.

sony_fe40_f2-5gSony FE 40mm f/2.5 G

Pros: Compactness, construction, diaphragm controlled with dial (with deactivatable clicks), sharpness, absence of chromatic aberrations, optics with the latest technologies, focus.

Cons: Opening 2.5 a bit limited for the price, price.

Opinion: I bought this lens as I wanted a small fixed to be used for some portraits and videos with my Sony and I let myself be intrigued by this brand new series of three lenses (24, 40 and 50). I also wanted to test the technology of my a7RIII with a recent perspective. Undoubtedly the price is a bit too high but the quality is quite good, chromatic aberrations almost completely absent. On Alpha 7RIII the autofocus is very fast. The weight is really low and makes the machine almost compact. It's clearly not comparable to a Canon 50mm 1.2 series L or Sony's GM equivalent but it also costs a quarter of its price. For sure it seems that it is much better than the previous Sony Zeiss 35mm 2.8, although the focal length is different or at least I have read opinions on those who compared them. Sony did not yet have a 40mm, personally I find it a strange focal length, you have to get used to it as it is neither a wide angle nor a normal and therefore you can also adapt well to any eventuality but it is not trivial. I took a series of portraits of my morosa to test the sharpness and it looks very valid.

sony_rx0Sony RX0

Pros: Undisputed robustness. Extreme compactness. Sensor quality, the same as some RX100s.

Cons: Perhaps the extreme compactness makes it difficult to hold in my field, the use attached to the harness in adventures. Fixed diaphragm. No stabilization for videos.

Opinion: I wanted a Sony to use while I'm or on my way to the mountains, a car that I can keep attached to a lanyard and harness, a machine that could take a beating here and not ruin it, but at the same time take daytime photos similar to those I do with its larger alpha series cousins. Clearly you can't have everything, but I have to say that the photos do them really well and that if done with the right light they make a lot. Unfortunately I bought it a month before version 2 came out, but not using it for videos is fine with me. To make it even more indestructible, I bought the SmallRig cage.

canon_newfd50_f1-2lCanon NewFD 50mm f/1.2 L

Pros: Super opening, the lens is giant! compactness, lens quality, blurry.

Cons: Vintage optics, lots of chromatic aberration, spherical lens.

Opinion: I would say that it is great to have a 50 1.2 spending little (in the used it is also located at 200/300€). Vintage optics that when used on mirrorless can still make a lot. Having spherical lenses suffers from chromatic aberration but the blurry and the color are really beautiful and sharp. A 50 like this now costs more than 1000€ and therefore is a valid compromise to have quality little by little (If you are satisfied with the manual focus)

canon_newfd15_fisheyeCanon NewFD 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye

Pros: Epic fisheye, very valid also with adapter on mirrorless FF. A manual fisheye but with excellent quality. Beautiful integrated beeper filters.

Cons: Vintage optics, this brings disadvantages, but in some cases negligible.

Opinion: I obviously bought it used a few years ago to photograph in the mountains with the analog reflex. It is now an almost unseatable piece and those who have it hold it well. Impressive the construction quality, it looks like a gem. it's nice even just to have as a collector's item but if you mount it with an adapter on a mirrorless you can really do interesting things. Above all I like the fact that not having the aspheric lens is much wider, with a field of 180 ° on the diagonal but still maintaining the rectangular photo.

canon_70-200_f4Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM

Pros: Very open clarity. "Immortal" optics, even today I see many who use it. Light and thin. Constant opening. Colors. Price of now in used.

Cons: None other than the non-constant focus between zoom lengths. F4 enough for daytime landscape photos.

Opinion: I use it on Sony Alpha with Sigma MC-11. Great solution so you don't have to buy a Sony analogue or a similar Sigma. I didn't find any problems but you have to be careful with focus as it is very selective, a blade! In some cases the edges soften with a little less sharpness but in the center it is really sharp and detailed. I have to say that it is an approach that still amazes me.

samyang_14Samyang 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC Aspherical

Pros: Very good wide angle at optical level, good sharpness, price without a doubt, opening

Cons: Vignetting and light but correctable distortion, incongruity of the focus indications with reality (the real infinity is about 3 meters written on the ring)

Opinion: Forklift optics suitable for those who want a super wide angle, almost fisheye at a low price but with a good yield. The focus ring is not calibrated well, it is out of phase, the real infinity was where it was written 3 meters. The optics are of quality, the glasses are very precise. For the cost you can not consider defects those listed above and in my opinion they are all there! I sold it for the Sigma 14-24mm with the same opening. Obviously between Sigma and Sammy sigma wins hands down, but let's talk about optics that cost almost 5 times as much ? The extremely low price is given by the absence of electronics absolutely, but for such a focal point it is not a problem. With closed diaphragms (Above the 8) it begins to lose detail but still usable up to 16. I used it in canon version with SIGMA MC-11 adapter on the Sony Alpha 7 II and it was fine.

sony_a7iiSony A7 II

Pros: In 2021: Cost, high image quality, dynamic range, weight, colors, very manageable raw files, sensor stabilization, if used within its limits is a really good machine. The videos although only in 1080 50p are of excellent quality.

Cons: In 2021: Noise at high ISOs, unusable above 8000, noise that is mainly concentrated in the lower part of the photo (probably due to how the sensor is powered). Burst and slow buffers. Ring with one less screw than the models of now. Image processing time almost equal to exposure time. Anything that comes out of its range of possibilities.

Opinion: It is my very first machine body, three years and three months after the purchase I can say that I made the right choice. In my opinion it offers a truly exceptional sensor, known for its truly extensive dynamics. To date, in 2021, with version III already consolidated it is probably still valid to spend little and I imagine that it will be released in production around September, when probably the long-awaited version IV will be launched. In any case, it is a room that still offers exceptional performance and versatility, especially when combined with a good optics. The defects I found were: Noise above 4000 ISO a bit excessive (improved in later versions). Processing time almost equal to the duration of exposure (If you shoot at 30 seconds waits 25-30 seconds to process the file, making it along the shooting process at night). The burst and buffer are not very fast but it is not intended for this type of use. In 3 years I haven't noticed burned pixels yet. In conclusion, I now recommend it to anyone who wants a full frame spending little to take naturalistic, landscape or other photos where you do not need a great burst. Even today I use it with pride as a second machine body, for conditions where I do not need other characteristics.

sigma_14-24_f2-8dnSigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art

Pros: High sharpness even at the edges. Constant focus. Aspheric lens on a super wide angle. Field of view width 114.1°. robustness.

Cons: Weight, but in my case it does not matter and for this quality this focal range is necessary. Perhaps a little limited the range 14-24mm but beyond it would have become less performing at the maximum length.

Opinion: I have been owning this lens for a year and a half now and have used it for mountain landscapes and adventure photography, excellent solution to have a small range of super wide-angle focal length with a very wide aperture. The price is typical of Sigma, not too expensive and above all, halved compared to the SONY equivalent. Excellent image quality, incredible sharpness even at the edges, without exaggeration with vignetting and distortion, the correction with the automatic profile of Lightroom is very effective but not always necessary. The filters on the back are interesting but you have to settle for ND, otherwise NiSi offers at a very high price a slab door made on purpose but has a bit of vignetting at 14mm. The construction quality is valid, tropicalized and protected even with gasket for the E attachment. Personally I almost always use it for adventure photos and landscapes in the mountains and I wouldn't change it. The maximum aperture of 2.8 still makes it effective for night shots of 20/30 seconds (at 14mm). Obviously if you want to take only photos of nocturnal landscapes maybe it pays the same price (About) the Sigma 14mm Fixed 1.8!!! It's a bomb!
