Pros: stabilization, good image quality

Cons: fragility

Opinion: They gave me one last fall. I used it little, then this summer I took it on vacation. After a while, she began to report problems with overheating of the display even shortly after being immersed in water (just below the surface). In short, the rear display has stopped working. being under warranty I took it to assistance and they gave me back a new room. I opened it tonight and I found the plastic attachment supplied, the one with double-sided tape, already broken in the box. The packaging was absolutely intact. Luckily I was left with the one in the old room, otherwise I would have had to request a new return. I had, before this, a Gopro Hero 4, which has never had any such problems even if used intensively. I do not know if it is a matter of brand, or of production standards over time worsened (I have never understood the fashion of the most recent models, even gopro, of eliminating the external case in transparent plastic, which gave a completely different feeling), but I will not use it with such tranquility ....

canon_rf100-500Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM

Pros: In order of importance: autofocus, sharpness, stabilization, weight and bulk, excellent compatibility with RF 1.4X

Cons: In order of importance: cost, maximum aperture at f/7.1, control ring positioning, hood a little to improve (filter window that always opens)

Opinion: I have been using it quite intensively since February 2022, also associated with RF 1.4X, mainly for nature photography, but I am also appreciating it for landscape and portraits, especially dynamic and sporty. I confirm all the excellent qualities already described, including the enormous versatility. I would say that the positive optical aspects are such that already from the display of my R5 you can appreciate differences in contrast, saturation and pleasantness in general compared to other optics. If I shoot with short focal lengths, it is possible to recognize from the display the photos taken with the 100-500 compared to others made with close focal lengths, but with other lenses also L series (eg the old EF 24-70 f / 4 at 70 mm), precisely for this visual pleasure. Not that at 500 mm is not even, I simply do not have lenses with which to compare yields! The autofocus best marries the algorithms of the Eos r5, in my case, practically not failing to focus on stationary or "normal" moving subjects, and guaranteeing excellent yields with subjects in flight, take-off or fast moving in general. The stabilization is really great, I repeatedly took perfect photos at 1/20 or 1/15 freehand, simply with a support point. It performs very well, even if a minimum of quality loss is felt by displaying at 100%, with the dedicated 1.4x RF multiplier, with which the autofocus does not show any performance degradation. Very convenient to carry even for hours and uphill, perhaps the "stem" of the collar could have been a little shorter, so as not to sprout too much from bags or backpacks not very deep. Other minor defects are the positioning of the control ring, too far from the zoom and focus rings to be promptly at hand (in fact, I prefer the controls in the car), and the hood window to adjust the filters that, at least to me, often remains always open. The biggest limit (not defect) is obviously the brightness, especially in combination with the RF 1.4x. Even in open spaces, in such circumstances, the ISOs rise a lot in the hours with the most beautiful light (2-3 hours at the turn of sunrise and sunset), to guarantee times of at least 1/500. In short, every now and then you will continue to miss a nice supertele f / 2.8 or f / 4. Finally, I resize a little the validity of its use as a macro, taking advantage of the short focusing distance. I tried, but having the possibility of using a real macro, getting closer to the subject, it is definitely another thing, mainly for the rendering of the blurred.

canon_eos_r5Canon EOS R5

Pros: Autofocus, burst, high ISO rendering, IBIS, image quality in general, very high customization

Cons: Cost, lots of settings to be aware of.

Opinion: I have been using it since July 2021, mainly for nature and macro photos for now. Compared to my previous 7D, undoubtedly another world. I read a lot before the purchase, I remember many of the conclusions reached by the authors of the reviews, and I like to set up my review by synthesizing and confirming them. So: 1) for naturalistic use, this machine greatly increases the percentage of successful shots, which you can take home. Good or bad, in my case, the beautiful occasions, to which I cared, were almost always exploited thanks to the burst at 20 fps and the very fast and precise autofocus (eyeAF in particular, both on old lenses such as the EF 400 f / 5.6L, even more on the RF 100-500); 2) my base ISO value has gone from 400 to 1600, and I am not afraid to get to 6400 when needed, especially when this is functional only to have very fast shutter speeds even in so much light; this allows you to always photograph at times around 1/2000 even with lenses that are not very bright, thus bringing home still images of subjects that start in flight, shoot, etc., often unexpected events; 3) the IBIS, especially coupled to the RF 100-500, is really a remarkable help and I can shoot freehand at 500 or 700 mm at times even of 1/20 s, especially if in support; imagine photographing a blackbird with the streamy water of the stream; it is a concrete possibility to follow the subject freehand from one stone to another and shoot at the right time, even taking advantage of the burst (as long as it stands still during the shot ...); 4) if the light you shoot at is even minimally good, the R5 will do it full justice and exalt it, without having to go crazy with particular stunts in post production; excellent, in particular, the management of backlight and strongly contrasted situations; 5) being able to crop images a lot thanks to the 45 Mpx is really an undeniable advantage, and also gives here the possibility of having an acceptable shot as a resolution on many more occasions than with a "normal" 20-30 Mpx (lapalissiano, but when you really realize it is still very rewarding!); 6) generally, I can't wait to mount the RF 100-500 and go where there is some promising situation with various animals, so much so that perhaps I am neglecting a little the other genres, given the pleasure that this camera gives in this type of photography! I have therefore listed a series of non-technical considerations, but of real satisfaction deriving from practical use. I hope they serve beyond the strictly technical parameters, which you can find everywhere. In a nutshell, it is really nice and pleasant to use it. The only flaws are the cost, undoubtedly. Then, being very customizable, on the other hand sometimes you get something wrong and you go to alter the settings without realizing it too much. To be clear, a bit like it can happen with a very complex smartphone in the settings. One last negative note, common to the whole RF system. The fact of having to mount the caps of the lenses and the machine by aligning the notches is certainly not very practical, especially for those who take pictures in often uncomfortable conditions and are quickly changing lens (or multiplier) for a suddenly appeared subject.

canon_100_macroCanon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM

Pros: Rather cheap, good sharpness already closing by one stop, very nice colors and blurred

Cons: Constructive fragility

Opinion: I had this lens for a few years, before switching to the L version. From an optical point of view, making a brief (and certainly not exhaustive) comparison, I noticed a greater sharpness at f / 2.8 of the L lens, but otherwise also the version reviewed here is excellent and very similar to the L, already chudendo to f / 4. For me who love shooting at f/2.8 to make naturalistic macros a little outside the classic canons is a bit of an important limit. However, on most occasions I was still very satisfied with it for the years I used it. Well balanced, good focus, to be a macro, on Eos 7D. Regarding the use in natural environments, I have some doubts about the build quality. I had to send the lens for assistance due to problems with the focus motor after a few years of use, which was replaced at rather high costs compared to the current price of the lens, especially if used. Talking to other owners of the same lens some similar problem popped up. I would therefore recommend it for those who want to start doing macros or make occasional and not burdensome use of it. Otherwise, in case of repairs, you risk adding additional costs that bring the overall outlay very close to that necessary for the purchase of a used in excellent condition of the L version.

sigma_18-35_f1-8Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art

Pros: Very high sharpness, brightness, excellent blurry

Cons: Autofocus with Canon SLR, weight, lack of tropicalization

Opinion: I write this review after a few years of use on Canon Eos 7D. I confirm the exceptional sharpness, already at f/1.8 - f/2.0, which allows it to be used in low light conditions or for night scenes. I tried to make prints even 60x40, and those made with this lens are among those with more detail, among the various that I printed, even with Canon L series lenses. I found myself very well both for starry skies, but also to photograph the fireflies, where the wide opening was fundamental to highlight the light trails well. It's true, it has a poor focal range, if you think of it as a standard lens. In my case, however, for a 360-degree use (natural landscapes, nocturnal, portraits) I rarely missed those 15 mm of travel on the canvas side, obviously without thinking of using it for narrow portraits. Weight is important, but you get used to it and it doesn't upset the balance of the paired with the camera. The biggest flaw, on Canon SLR, is the autofocus, decidedly slower than the lenses of the parent company, and sometimes inaccurate. Using the USB Dock improves things a bit, but it doesn't eliminate the root of the problem. Consider taking some replicas of the shots you care about most, refocusing. The problem is that the inaccuracy is not easily categorized, even if it presents itself more with high-contrast scenes. I repeat, my ratings are on Canon 7D, I do not know if on the most recent APS-C SLR is different. Now I switched to Eos R5 (mirrorless), I tried to mount it, and what can I say. From this point of view the lens has been reborn. Higher autofocus speed (always less than Canon lenses), but above all surgical precision. It could be a great investment if ever a mirroless Canon APS-C came out in the future, where such a lens would truly be spectacular, if the autofocus were like that of the R5. There are not many such strategic lenses in terms of brightness and focal range at the moment. In summary, having to replace it with a fullframe lens moves me a sense of strong nostalgia, sum up. I believe that this is enough as a final assessment.
