![]() | Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-100mm f/4.0 IS Pro Pros: Construction, optical performance Cons: A Watusso for OM bodies (but it's an F4 and over 8X) Opinion: I was looking for a lens for when I need to travel light but without too many sacrifices. Having a Canon FF system I naturally thought of the RF24-240. Tried, I was not satisfied. Evaluated the technical characteristics and also thanks to the cashback, I bought an OM-5 equipping it with this objective. As a neophyte of the OM brand, immediately the surprise of the overall lightness: the whole weighs little more than just RF24-105L F4 ... Although the lens appears voluminous compared to the camera body, the handling is good even if in fact we are slightly unbalanced forward, but thanks to the good grip of the zoom ring you hold it and support it well. The second surprise came from the quality of the images: I downloaded them a bit biased since the M4/3 format is clearly disadvantaged compared to the FF not only for the smaller surface but because notoriously building high-resolution lenses on small formats is much more challenging than in the FF. Instead, the results have always been between good and excellent at any focal length. No problem in the center, the edges even at 12 mm and TA are more than acceptable, there is a slight distortion but it is easily eliminated. Switching to 24 and 50mm (48 and 100 equivalents for the FF) the already good overall quality improves even more and in my empirical tests the comparison with the Canon RF24-105L F4 is at the last pixel. Stretching in the 50-100 range does not feel significant drops in quality. The bokeh is always good, uniform and creamy, I particularly like it towards the major focal length where I think it gives the best. Vignetting always manageable or negligible, CA only hints visible at maximum magnification but still correctable. I was surprised by the good resistance to the backlight, it holds up well both when the sun is in the frame and that it enters by reflection, as from a body of water. The hood is slender, minimal, but the lock is safe both in the operational and inverted position. The stabilization resulting from the machine-objective assembly is very effective, I estimate at least on the four real stops. The construction of the lens is well cared for, excellent finishes, conveys a sense of solidity. The zoom ring is fluid, has only a very slight hardening towards the lower focal length, while the focus ring has a decisive activation shot and uniform rotation. In general I did not detect any mechanical backlash. In short, it is a great thing to go from 24 to 200 mm (equivalent) in a poor turn with the guarantee of good optical quality. The abbreviation PRO is well justified. sent on July 31, 2023 |
![]() | Patona LP-E6 Pros: apparently the price. Cons: Everything, more. Opinion: For a non-repeatable event I bought two to support the original Canon. One has ceased to work on the second charge, the other is still alive but it is not possible to count on its storage capacity, in less than two weeks it self-discharges. When the machine signals that only one notch is missing, the original charger can take an hour or five minutes to restore it, so, randomly. And the charge lasts accordingly. Ditto when you start from completely discharged: the times vary unpredictably with some sign of full fake. They may seem convenient, but as far as seen the quality is consistent with what is paid and this justifies, although not totally, the cost of the originals. sent on July 24, 2023 |
![]() | Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8 L IS USM Pros: It doesn't illuminate the sensor, it sculpts it! Cons: It is not a stalk. Opinion: I have been using it for three years coming from the excellent EF 16-35F4L IS inherited from the 5DIII that I used with the adapter. Despite the demanding F2.8 aperture, this zoom shows how the aperture can only be used for 'artistic' reasons. Closing in order to achieve greater quality is in fact useless, the variations are very modest. The really high sharpness already at TA, with the edges qualitatively glued to the center, is paired with a vignetting that is never a problem, as well as distortion. The hood has not proved to be very efficient, probably to improve it we should resort to its greater dimensioning but increasing the fatigue of use; On the other hand, we are helped by a really good backlight resistance in such a complex perspective. The mechanics are precise, the rotations are uniform, almost velvety (similar to some Zeiss of Contax). I find the lens clean and well cared for, certainly the volume and weight do not apply it as ideal for hiking in the mountains, but if you accept the effort you are amply rewarded with so much quality, especially in scenes with strong contrast. A great glass, chapeau Canon. sent on June 19, 2023 |
![]() | Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 L IS USM Pros: Sharp, compact, well built. Cons: You choose it for compactness by giving up a high brightness. Opinion: I have used it many times and I confirm a feature reported in many reviews: the sharpness is from true L. Even at TA and 300mm the yield is good, it becomes excellent at the lower focal points and even with 1.4X Kenko Pro multiplier the yield is maintained at more than acceptable levels. Almost non-existent distortion, light TA vignette, minimal CA and anyway everything easily correctable, excellent stabilization. The construction is compact and massive, transmits solidity, the mechanics is sufficiently fluid without significant games. When you're not using zoom blocking, it's a little space in your bag. I think it is a very successful lens with a high Q/P ratio. sent on October 16, 2019 |
![]() | Canon RF 24-105 mm f/4 L IS USM Pros: Compact, versatile, well built, L performance. Cons: Nothing significant. Opinion: For some months now it has been replacing my old 24-105/F4 L first version. The improvement on the 50-105 focals is clear, the images are vivid, sharp to the edges. Even in the wide-angle band the improvement is evident up to the edges, with a good correction of the distortion. A nice all-rounder lens, great already at TA and that does not disappoint even in the backlights. Low color aberration, easily eliminated. It is true that by extending the lens you can notice the thin lines of the joints of the plastic tank that contains the lenses, but you have to observe it carefully to make a case and anyway the (solid) construction reciprocates you with a lower weight. The focus is quick, silent, precise, there is no comparison with the version it replaces, the stabilization is excellent. The ergonomics and balance are great with the R, you appreciate the lock button of the zoom extension and the useful dial - typical of the RF optics - that I use to modify the exposure. I think his Q/P ratio is very high. sent on October 05, 2019 |
