![]() | Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM Pros: Fast and silent autofocus, excellent color rendering, effective stabilization, great sharpness at all focal lengths both in the center and at the edges, additional ring compared to EF lenses Cons: Noticeable vignetting at 24mm, price Opinion: I owned the excellent Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM II and this RF version is preferred mainly for 2 reasons: the presence of stabilization, useful and effective, and the addition of a customizable ring (I use it for exposure compensation). Beyond this, the new RF is slightly superior to the predecessor EF in several respects but these are, in my opinion, marginal differences. Like all standard zooms, the lens is not free from some defects, first of all an evident vignetting at 24mm and all aperture. In general, however, the performance is really high-level. The colors it returns are beautiful, the autofocus is silent and very fast and the stabilization, equally silent, makes a big difference on a lens of this type. I also add that the optics, subjective opinion, are aesthetically beautiful and well balanced when attached to my R5. Usually standard zoom lenses are hated or loved, there are no half measures! :-) For my way of photographing, which requires quality but light equipment, this kind of lens is indispensable. I am very satisfied with it! sent on October 01, 2025 |
![]() | Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM Pros: Excellent sharpness, very fast autofocus, effective stabilization, robustness, lightness and great versatility (almost macro) Cons: Limited compatibility with extenders and lens hood flap that often opens by itself Opinion: I owned the excellent Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM II and I switched to the 100-500 mainly for the 100mm more focal length (which are not few). The lens is very handy (closed dimensions and weight are about the same as a classic 70-200 2.8) and has a very fast and precise autofocus. Nothing to say about the effectiveness of weather sealing, sharpness and image quality in general are really high. The fairly low weight, for a lens that reaches 500mm, and the effective stabilization make the handheld use of this lens rather easy, even for prolonged times. In general, it is a very versatile lens, valid for different photographic genres: photographic hunting, outdoor sports, landscape photography and even rather extreme close-ups, given the short focusing distance. The blur is quite good but, not being a very bright lens, certainly other optics (such as professional super-telephoto lenses) are preferred from this point of view. The main flaw is the compatibility with extenders. On my R5, at least the 1.4 extender guaranteed good performance both from the point of view of image quality and from that of the autofocus speed. Compared to the "smooth" optics, a drop could be noticed, but quite limited. The biggest problem is that extenders can only be mounted from 300mm focal length. This leads to a decreased zoom width and a noticeable increase in size, resulting in a worsening of lens portability. For these reasons, after a few months of use, I sold the 1.4 extender. Another, small, defect is represented by the door on the hood that allows you to rotate any polarizing filter without disassembling the hood itself. This is a great convenience, too bad that the door tends to open by itself quite frequently. sent on September 04, 2025 |
![]() | Canon EOS R5 Pros: Excellent dynamic range, remarkable image quality, high ISO resistance, autofocus and burst, ergonomics, effective weather sealing, viewfinder and LCD monitor Cons: Presence of rolling shutter in some situations; long exposures impossible with the electronic shutter; Non-restrictible burst in electronic shutter mode Opinion: I have been using the Canon R5 since the end of August 2023 and I am extremely satisfied with it. At the time I took advantage of a special opportunity and managed to buy it new for just under 3,000 euros at a Media World store. It is a camera with which you can do very well any photographic genre. The ISO sealing, now also coupled with modern digital noise reduction software that works wonders, is very good for a camera with such a dense sensor. Dynamic range and image quality are really excellent and the autofocus also behaves very well, assisted by a fast burst and a rather large buffer. In terms of ergonomics I really like it, compared to the Canon R, which presented unfortunate innovations in several respects, the R5 represents a continuation on the same path of the Canon 5 series reflex cameras which in my opinion offered excellent ergonomics. I used it in the rain and snow and it never batted an eyelid, showing that its tropicalization is quite good. Viewfinder and LCD monitor are excellent, I also like that the monitor, in addition to being adjustable, can be closed so as to be protected. At the video level I use it very little (I am not passionate about videomaking but only about photography) and therefore I have not "clashed" with the well-known problems of overheating ... For my personal use, the only defects, overcome by the next model, are in electronic shutter mode: the presence of rolling shutter on some occasions given the traditional and non-stacked sensor, the shutter speed limit to 1/2 seconds that prevents you from using it for long exposures, the burst that is not adjustable and always travels to the maximum (20 fps). For long exposures I solved it by setting the electronic first curtain mode, which reduces vibrations and extends the life of the mechanical shutter a bit. For action photos I am almost always forced to use the mechanical shutter to avoid rolling shutter and possibly limit the speed of the burst. In conclusion, I consider the Canon R5 an excellent camera, which will remain valid for several years to come. sent on August 29, 2025 |
