sony_fe28-70_f2gmSony FE 28-70mm f/2 GM

Pros: The real G Master lens from Sony. A Poetic lens. A Storyteller Lens!

Cons: The puritans of perfect resolution will say: This lens is useless!

Opinion: The first word that comes to mind to describe this Sony lens is: POETIC! Yes, that's the right adjective to describe the Sony GM FE 28-70mm F2 lens. I bought it on January 8'25, and the feeling is that of having the sony 24-70 Gm mk1 in my hand, same size but with a poetic rendering at F2: Balanced sharpness but never clinical at TA (it's not like the cold and clinical 24-70 GM mk2 and many Sony fixed lenses), soft blur with a cinematic look and a compact construction that you don't feel the weight (on this Sony was good at making a lens not excessively heavy). Lenses such as the 28-70 F2 are a rarity in photography as many lenses are anonymous in character and perfection. I owned the 24-70mm Gm mk2 (which I reviewed here), it is the living example of how the evolution of the progress/regression of photographic technologies eliminates the element that makes it magical: the character. Finding a properly made lens has become difficult and this lens plus the 85mm and the part of the original triad f2.8 are the top G master sony lenses. To date, the puritans of perfect resolution will say that a 3.5k€ lens with an imperfect and heavy rendering is scafalous! Tastes are tastes (of course), but knowing how to distinguish a clinical lens from a lens of character is not enough to have a good eye! I conclude that Sony has created a glass/ masterpiece, for me the real G Master lens! with a poetic rendering, less clinical and more picturesque. Suitable for storytellers and ceremonialists but which amuses amateurs and artists like me, it is fantastic both in photos and in video (cinematographers will be happy). A vote for this goal? 10 laude! he deserves it all!

sony_fe24-70gm_iiSony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II

Pros: One of the most modern, and boring, handymen that exists!

Cons: A "soulless" lens!

Opinion: In my journey with photography the 24-70mm is the main lens I use to tell stories. I have owned the previous Sony GM mk1 all-rounder for many years and despite the imperfections it remains the best lens for Sony with a unique performance/character. I was hoping to find the same charisma in the new 24-70mm GM mk2, a lens that I have kept for more than two years but that I have used very little. Despite the improvements in size and weight, the lens did not convince me! I found the rendering aggressive at all focal lengths starting from F2.8, I have never seen this "aggressiveness" from 24 to 70mm, as I have never seen such a dry and nervous blur, as I have never seen an ultra-corrected lens free from various defects, including flares. Honestly, I thought I would find some imperfections so as to change the opinion about him, and instead I found a lens "without a soul" (someone in the past had already framed it before it came out). This doesn't just apply to the all-rounder mk2, but ALL GM lenses released from 2021 to date. They are so clinical that the yield they offer is clinical and digitized!. I don't know how they love a lens like this, I really don't find anything nice in this. (well maybe the ignorant understand more!). A piece of advice: evaluate well what you buy because technological progress is killing what photography is: magic! Novelty can also bring disappointments and illusions, gaining in economy but losing in poetic yields, and we are losing this magic because all brands push for extreme perfection; The only thing that heartens me is that true photographers know how to distinguish the performance of a modern lens and aim for imperfect lenses but with character. But PH's boomers don't know that, in addition to clinical performance, it takes a dowry to practice the art of photography! PS: on January 8 '25 I gave it away in place of the new and charismatic 28-70mm F2 GM.

sony_fe85_f1-4gmSony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM

Pros: One Word: Poetic.

Cons: Too vintage for those accustomed to modern glass!

Opinion: What is the right adjective to describe this glass? POETICAL. Is that too much? NOT for me! This Sony 85 F1.4 GM is like this, but a large part of photographers (experienced or not) have not understood it. Not even I understood it at the beginning since I read many reviews (even pseudo) that criticized it for many of the defects it has. But is it really so? This is subjective. It is built at the highest level, very solid and with very fine quality glass (like the whole G Master Line). What about quality? we are in 2022 and although the competition has churned out other 85mm with modern character, the GM is a mixture between vintage and modern. Today modern glasses are ultra sharp with blurred sometimes too hard, the Sony has a POETIC rendering especially at f1.4, like a picture with delicate nuances to act as a backdrop to the sharp but delicate subject. The bokeh reaches unexpected levels of balance and elegance (the 11 blades of the diaphragm do their part) and also the color rendering stands out compared to other lenses, with natural tones. The various defects are corrected quietly, but the real defect is the ssm engine, a bit 'old and a little' noisy. Beyond this L'85 GM is a glass that you will fall in love with. I currently own the '85 Sigma for over a year (soon I will write something about him), but the heart is still for the Sony GM, and although it may have all the defects of this world the magic that Sony possesses if you dream of sigma. On Sigma I complain about the too modern rendering but the concept of modernity is ruining the magic of photography; a decade ago the glasses were poetic (example the Canon 85 F1.2II) today we find ultra-sharp and ultra-correct lenses but that are "soulless". Is progress to blame? I do not know but to you the arduous sentence. Finally, in October 2022, I sold the Sigma and bought the Sony back. The sony GM is another world, the perfect example of modern art with a touch of vintage...

sony_fe24-70gmSony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM

Pros: The first all-rounder I bought, How to say: the first love is never forgotten!

Cons: Various defects (read the opinion)

Opinion: I owned two copies of this all-rounder and it's still a top lens for Sony cameras. Waiting to see what version two will look like, version one is well built, very solid and very fine glass. It lacks the optical stabilizer but it is not a great absence (sony sensors think about it). The cons are the weight, it is felt after a long session, and the hood. Despite its age, the performance of this glass is still high: the focus works very well, both on new and previous machines (despite the old SSM engine), sometimes in low light conditions it is slow but it is still accurate. On sharpness it defends itself very well, it is a sharp lens with a bit of softness (even at the edges) at 70mm. Someone will bother, I personally do not hurt (in many cases, I look for it). It exploits excellently on machines with sensors from 24 to 42 mpx, Above 50mpx we are at the limit, but in general the performance is very high. The blurred is one of the aspects that I often look for in my photography and in this glass convinced me (halfway). In general it is good and / or soft, only in some cases at 24mm (not always) it was a bit "nervous"; bokeh balls are good at f2.8 but they are not full and smooth as in fixed and you can find onion structures inside and outside the spheres. Other annoying flaws are chromatic aberrations and flares, the latter horrible. Another con that almost everyone complains about is the cost, even if it is about 1600 euros. In general it is a "battle" lens that does everything and satisfies everything, and the Sony 24-70 GM is still valid in the photographic market and despite the age and some limitations could still be taken into account by photographers (amateurs and pros) who do not want to invest in version two, which will be smaller and sharper than the first version, or on other brands.

sony_gtough128gb_sdxc

Pros: The top memory card for sony cameras

Cons: Price

Opinion: Nothing to say about these memory cards, top for construction, especially resistant to shocks and puddles of water, top for backup write and read, especially if you have an a9 or more modern machines. The big con is the price, but keeping an eye on Amazon is also at more affordable prices. Recommended a priori.

sony_fe16-35_f2-8gmSony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM

Pros: The wide angle par excellence

Cons: Good stuff costs!

Opinion: Of the Sony lenses I own and those I owned, this is by far what I love deeply, more than its older brother 24-70GM. An exceptional lens both for its compact size and for the build quality. The use of this jewel is not only for landscape photography, it is a lens that has exceptional versatility in any photographic situation (ceremonial, travel, street, architecture, portraits). The sharpness levels are very high and holds up well even with mirrorless like the a7R3 and R4, always sharp from the center, at the corners it is a soft hair but the yield levels are high, even at closed apertures f11/13. the various defects are well contained, obviously greater eye to the 16mm focal length where it distorts and vignettes in an evident way but it manages well, The chromatic aberrations hold well, The only defect is the tightness of the flares (especially a Rainbow flare). It has good bokeh great for portraits and other various contexts. Of all that I wrote the real flaw is the price, but basically the good stuff costs! Mistake?

sony_a7r_iiiSony A7r III

Pros: The "perfect" camera: Exceptional resolution, Excellent Af, interesting hold at high iso (despite being a 42mpx), good video compartment, Dynamic range and versatility in use. Great best buy for those who do not want too many MPX from modern and advanced models

Cons: Some uncertainty about the AF sector (especially in the Real Time track af.), the useless pixel shift and chaotic menus.

Opinion: You know, perfection is not of this world. But this camera is one of those that deserves the attention of pro photographers and super advanced amateurs. As a former owner of the sony a7R2 (great mirrorless but with many flaws), the sony a7RIII is the camera I was waiting for bringing those improvements that were missing in the r2, from aesthetics to decisive quality. Needless to say, four years after the announcement this ml is still the best in circulation and for what it offers it is an excellent best buy for resolution, price and versatility (in my case I take care of landscape, street, travel, documentary photography). It is true that there is also the R4 that offers much more than this model (more resolution and a bit of improved af), but who really needs 61mpx? Without offending anyone I think that with this you have a lot of fun, remembering that 42 mpx although they are many are perfect for image quality and dynamic range, but above all it has an excellent hold at high iso, sometimes I took even at 3200/6400 and the photo is usable at 1000x1000. If you know how to exploit it right, it gives you many joys. I conclude that 2 years after the purchase, the a7r3 personally is the "perfect" camera for my way of creating stories and today it is at "human" prices of what was launched. and with native optics (GM and G) or adapted fun and creativity is guaranteed...
