La saturnia del pero o pavonia maggiore (Saturnia pyri (DENIS & SCHIFFERMÜLLER, 1775) è un lepidottero appartenente alla famiglia Saturniidae, diffuso in Europa, Nordafrica, Asia e America Settentrionale. Deve il suo nome comune al fatto che i bruchi si nutrono principalmente di foglie di pero ma può nutrirsi anche di foglie di melo, noce, pioppo, olmo, albicocco, ciliegio e diversi altri alberi del genere Prunus. E' la più grande farfalla nostrana, raggiungendo nelle femmine, che sono nettamente più grandi dei maschi, l'apertura alare di 17 cm. Questa specie è riconoscibile anche per gli occhi di pavone che spiccano sul fondo color cioccolato, sfumato di grigio, delle ali largamente orlate di una fascia ocracea chiara; le femmine hanno l'addome molto voluminoso e i maschi antenne ampiamente bipettinate. I bruchi, di mole notevole, sono verdi con tubercoli azzurri sparsi su tutto il corpo che recano ciuffi di peli neri e vivono sui peri, meli, frassini e olmi in una generazione sola da giugno ad agosto; giunti a maturazione, tessono un grande bozzolo sericeo bruno molto robusto con l'estremità superiore a nassa e vi si incrisalidano, rimanendo attaccati al tronco dell'albero. Dopo uno o più inverni passati in stato di crisalide, sfarfallano gli adulti che vengono sovente a volteggiare intorno alle lampade nelle sere estive; è famosa la capacità delle femmine di attrarre i maschi anche da molto lontano grazie alla secrezione di speciali sostanze chimiche attive (i ferormoni sessuali), la cui presenza, anche in quantità infinitesimale, è captata in modo sorprendente dalle loro sensibilissime antenne. I ferormoni infatti sono dei prodotti chimici estremamente volatili che si diffondono nell'aria come onde acustiche e coprono così grandissime distanze. Inoltre sono estremamente specifici, per cui sono percepiti esclusivamente da individui della stessa specie, capaci di "sentire" solo quel profumo, refrattari quindi a stimoli odorosi diversi che potrebbero confonderli. Stavo ripulendo delle piante dai rovi quando all'interno ho visto questa Saturnia pyri, grande è stata l'emozione nel vederla dopo molti anni, nel poterla fotografare e alla sera vederla spiccare il volo.
