 FALENE

Le falene sono degli insetti che, come le farfalle, appartengono all'ordine dei lepidotteri. Le antenne delle falene, a differenza di quelle delle farfalle, possono avere diverse forme: pennate o bipennate, cioè ramificate come un pettine, filiformi, a bastoncello ecc.; mentre le ali, a riposo, sono chiuse a tetto o aperte. A differenza delle farfalle, è errata la convinzione che siano velenose. La distinzione tra farfalle e falene non risponde a una classificazione scientifica tassonomica, ma deriva dall'uso comune. In base a tale distinzione "popolare", alcuni autori del passato hanno proposto una distinzione tra Ropaloceri o "Rhopalocera" (farfalle) ed Eteroceri o "Heterocera" (falene) che però non è scientificamente accettata. La maggior parte delle falene sono notturne, mentre le farfalle sono quasi esclusivamente insetti a volo diurno.
