nikon_d500Nikon D500

Pros: Speed, precision and sensitivity of the AF, burst, buffer, XQD-SD, construction, high iso yield, configurability

Cons: Battery life

Opinion: A real war machine for action photos (sport or nature), a miniature flagship. Constructively speaking is excellent and evidenced by any criticism: completely tropicalized, all in all light, ergonomically perfect. Extremely configurable, both in terms of keys and in terms of the performance of the AF. The latter is the same module mounted on the D5 and is simply perfect in everything: speed and precision in the hook, ability to follow the subject, sensitivity in situations of low light. At the burst and buffer level we are back at the top: the frames per second are 10 and, using the XQD cards, the buffer has basically no limits (only after 20 uninterrupted seconds the shooting cadence drops so as not to strain the mirror mechanism too much but just leave the shutter button for a moment and you can resume). In terms of image quality we are clearly not at the level of modern FF machines, but I have not found APS-C bodies with better performance: at high iso the yield remains very valid (excellent considering the reduced sensor) and exposing correctly you can use without major problems even at 12,800 iso. The look in which he excels, about the high iso, it is the chromatic seal: the noise is clearly present but the rendering of the colors is not affected and the final yield of the file is superior even to that of full frame bodies of a previous generation (I also have a D700 and up to 3,200 iso I prefer it as noise to the D500 but exceeded 3200 absolutely not because doing so means finding washed-out and dominant colors that make the file very lower what you get at the same sensitivity with the D500). Flawless machine? Almost. The only one I personally find is the battery life: it's really "energetic". With a battery normally travel around 6-700 shots, no more, a longer lifespan than reflex. It is not an insurmountable defect, in the end it resolves with one or two spare batteries (strictly original Nikon, the D500 disdains the compatible, I do not know there are fully compatible!), but it is right to report it. In this regard two notes: the first is that in situations where I use the gust the problem feels less and the shots pass abundantly the 1,000, the second is that with some lenses I noticed that the battery lasts much less than with others, from what I read it seems to depend on the management of the eventual stabilizer in the lens that in some cases remains active for much longer than due (in my case with the Sigma 24-105 the battery lasts hard definitely less than with the Nikon 18-200).

Pros: AF speed and accuracy, sharpness, build quality, stabilizer effectiveness, dual zoom system (ring/pump), value for money, upgradeable/customizable via USB dock

Cons: Weight

Opinion: Fantastic lens, with a very high quality / price ratio. Combined with the D500's autofocus, it allows you to get excellent photos of fast-moving subjects, with high sharpness already at full aperture. The lens is quite heavy and if possible it would be better to use it with a monopiede but on occasions when this is not possible it remains the same usable even freehand (I got great photos taking freehand on a dinghy) although after a few minutes the muscles of the arms require a little respite. While it is quite heavy, the positive face of the medal is given by the excellent construction quality: completely tropicalized, metal body, very high attention to detail, from this point of view it is really difficult to make criticisms. A separate chapter should be dedicated to zooming, which can be managed both via the classic ring, and using the "pump" lens such as the Canon 100-400 first version. I find the pump system extremely effective when you have to photograph subjects in rapid movement towards us: with the zoom at 150mm they are located and, holding the front of the lens firmly, you use the pump system to get to fully frame the subject. In this way it is much easier - than with the ring - to follow the movement of the subject and at the same time, if you are using the freehand lens, give greater stability to the body+lens set. I have not yet used it in particularly dusty environments but so far I have not found dust between the lenses: the excellent tropicalization and construction quality I believe manages to limit or exclude what is a recurring problem in other lenses equipped with zooms of this type. Through the USB Dock Sigma it is possible to intervene on the accuracy /adjustment of the AF (Personally I did not need it with any of the machines with which I used it: D700, D500, Z6) and it is possible to update its firmware. Last note for those who have Nikon: it works without any problem with mirrorless, obviously mounting the FTZ adapter (in my case, as written above, Z6).
