Reviews of cameras, lenses, tripods, heads and other accessories written by Mr_dohc

sony_a7ivSony A7 IV

Pros: Camera body with improved ergonomics, customization, autofocus, compatible and adaptable lens availability, dynamic range, resolution, articulated monitor, colors, quality and video functionality.

Cons: Noise too intrusive compared to the resolution, medium-high ISO yield, video crop x1.5, noisy shooting, stabilizer lower than the competition, high cost.

Opinion: Counter-current review. It's a really well made camera, with a body finally comfortable; Nice articulated display addition. As an "all-rounder" it is the best in Sony and among the best on the market, it takes great photos and captures great videos. Much better autofocus: faster and more accurate, especially in tracking. Stabilizer improved even if slightly, resulting in a step below the canon / Panasonic summit. Gust more than enough. Appreciated the increase in resolution... at the expense -however- of more noise. I love the 7 IV and I consider it a really remarkable machine, but I'm unhappy with the performance of the sensor, noise side at least. It returns detailed images, with great dynamic range, improved colors, but far too much noise since intermediate ISOs. Everything becomes more evident with the rise of the ISO or with the recovery in post. It is not serious, nor unmanageable, for heaven's sake, but it has the same grain as a7R III, which has over 40mpx and several years behind it. Honestly I am of the opinion that Sony should have taken other paths: A) keep the old 24mpx and use the new processor to make it even more effective: B) develop a 26-29mpx sensor using the new processor to obtain similar results but with more detail. To be clear, it is a really effective machine from all points of view and allows you to deal with any photographic genre, but I am disappointed by the yield in terms of grain and / or ISO. I spent a lot of money to move from S5 to the Sony world and I thought I would find a superior product in everything. I was wrong. For skeptics or critics, know that I still own an R6 (12000 shots), I had S5 (4000 shots), a7 III (3000 shots). I avoid making too many comparisons with competitors to avoid super fanboy controversy. I just say that it is a great tool but that I would have preferred an extra effort. This is my opinion, based on my use and my tastes. Is it worth buying? Yes, absolutely, on the other hand it judges a camera as a whole.

samyang_af24-70_f2-8Samyang AF 24-70mm f/2.8 FE

Pros: Cost, brightness, autofocus

Cons: Full aperture image quality, weight

Opinion: A lens that I would define more than honest and valid, obviously in relation to the price (around 900 euros). If compared with the counterparts of other brands you immediately notice the worst image quality, to be understood at full aperture: 24-35mm are more than decent, but from 40 to 70mm the softness of the image is evident. Also compared with the old (so to speak) Canon EF 24-70/2.8 II and the difference is obvious. Closing the diaphragm, of course, the differences flatten out a lot and the image appears of excellent quality. Neutral colors, maybe a little cold. Silent and fast autofocus. Important weight. Its biggest advantage is the cost. Lens advertised as parafocal, in fact it is not: during the zoom, the image blurs and is refocused by the electronics that try to keep up. If you can take at least one Sigma Art... Otherwise if your budget is really tight, this lens can be for you... net of a lower IQ.

canon_5dCanon 5D

Pros: Ergonomic body and not too heavy, sturdiness, few frills, FF, chromatic rendition, light files, ISO bass.

Cons: LV absence, few AF points, limited ISO, slow burst.

Opinion: Socket used at €300 with two original batteries: I love it. I love pushing it beyond its limits. It conveys a feeling of robustness and "professionalism". Very comfortable body, with the pleasant presence of the joystick for the selection of (few) points of AF. Quick focus, but only with the center point, the others are good for stationary and easily dockable subjects. Menu very simple and intuitive, with the right amount of settings. Pity the absence of live view, but it is absolutely understandable. As for the files that churn, what can I say? It's magical. Magic. Thanks to the few MPX does not put in crisis optical even dated and gives photos that occupy little space. Any advice? Bright Lenses and low ISO: it will amaze you. Leaving aside the obvious speech related to the 1600 native ISO (3200 extended), the grain that is clearly visible already from ISO intermediate does not annoy, sometimes revealing to be appreciated. Display conservingly (Little shadow Recovery) and you'll have images with the classic Canon fullframe look of the past. Splendid colors, little to say. Do not take it to "try the FF", a modern APSC ridicules it at the level of mere image quality. That's not the point. A fantastic school ship, a fantastic "second body". It is a reflex with a few finery... One that goes straight to the chase and needs precise rules. Use it for delight, calmly, reasoning every shot. He won't disappoint you.

sony_rx10_iiSony RX10 II

Pros: Body complete with everything, versatile and good quality lens, excellent video, good ergonomics and number of commands, good files to low ISO, poorly organized but complete software.

Cons: Heavy weight and little pocket, unorientable display, quality and machinability of raw file beyond 400 ISO.

Opinion: My opinion is "influenced" by the habit of FF machine bodies even if not very recent (EOS 6d), I say immediately. Overall I find the RX10-II a compact (bridge) very well made. It's equipped with pretty much everything you really need. The machine body is big and heavy, but justified by the number of commands available and the good lens 24-200/2.8 equivalent (I believe in metal). I liked the aperture ring with selector to cancel the "click". Zoom fluid but not very fast and noisy. AF of a good level, considering the type of machine: It also manages to manage decently a moving subject. Great burst in JPEG. RAW files that can be worked but only at low ISO, over the 400-600 ISO really start to mash, losing much detail and mestrando an annoying grain. It is not a device for the nude and raw photographer. While having complete controls and adjustments, it does not have a sensor capable of keeping up with the M4/3. It must be bought by those who do not have photography as their only intention. When used for video, instead, reveals amazing qualities, offering a very tasty package: 4k to 30p, 1080 to 60p, microphone jacks and dedicated headphones, Tilt Monitor, clickless diaphragms, manual AF with focus peaking (also in photography), good stabilizer, Advanced Slowmotion, numerous video codecs and customizable profiles, Zebrato, assist to manual focus. In essence: Excellent for videos, mediocre for photos.
