Hasselblad XCD 45mm f/4 Pros: The best of Hasselblad in 5cm Cons: don't tell me the AF is slow and the optics are dark Opinion: The only lens of the Hassy kit, it becomes a 35mm equivalent on the X1D and X2D bodies. The optics are superb, very correct, but without sacrificing microcontrast and three-dimensionality, perhaps thanks to a simple optical scheme with few elements. It can also be used on the new X2D, so the 50megapizzas of the X1D digests them as if it were a lightly seasoned salad. Light, short, protrudes about 1cm beyond the handle of the X1D, the price to pay for a piece of glass so precious and compact for an MF- (or FF+ if you want) is a low brightness that starts from f4. Suitable for slow, reasoned photos, as per the tradition of the Swedish brand. It costs little, around 1100Euro new, used is about 800-900Euro, it is the "towing" optics of Hassy's "X" system, the one that alone can push you to enter the system. There is nothing like it, it is not a downward compromise, I put it at the top of my personal podium, which it shares with the Leica-Vario mounted on the Leica X-Vario. sent on May 11, 2023 |
Hasselblad X1D Pros: With the 45P it is smaller than many micro 4/3. File quality, great and free raw hasselblad developer, color profile and stellar optical park. Price of the used. Cons: Obscene that it took years to fix the problems via firmware. Opinion: I use it in combination with the Foveon in those situations where the foveon fails to do well. The IQ is very high, obviously the Foveon in the right conditions is unapproachable, but the X1D offers a very high constancy of yield in all contexts. Let's start with the two real strengths of this Hasselblad, which in my opinion differentiate it from other excellent systems: 1. Color profile: perfect in every shooting condition, neutral and balanced, from landscape to portraiture, from landscapes with warm tones to cold ones, it is always and simply perfect. Color correction was the PP process that took me the most time (and bored), but the raw of the X1D are almost always already perfect and I can skip this phase. 2. Parco Ottiche: I tried 2, the 45 f4 (taken) and the 35-70 (discarded because too bulky), both have a stellar yield, combine detail with microcontrast, a rarity that I found only with the Leica X-Vario (tried for a month, but I did not like the "pop" colors). They pay in terms of brightness, but if you want small optics on a medium format and of maximum quality, then you have to sacrifice brightness. Almost the entire optical park is not bright, so abstain photographers of the night or lovers of extreme blurry. Flaws: - slight chromatic noise even at low iso, fortunately the raw developer Hasselblad removes it very well, even the one at high iso and does it without "chromatic sciftaggio". - viewfinder good, but definitely not worthy of a car that in 2016 cost 10K euros. - Bought after 2019 when they fixed all the bugs may make sense, but before there were too many and too serious software problems, really embarrassing. I omit to insert among the defects the operational slowness, the absence of sci-fi AF or focus tracking, the 2.3 fps burst or the battery that lasts 100 photos. It is a medium format, which although reduced, can not have the performance of minor fomati. Socket used with the 45P at 3K Euro, always a lot of money, but at this price there is nothing that has the same size, general beauty of the file (of which the QI is only a component) and operational flexizability. Only Foveon can offer a higher IQ (and in my humble opinion up to Gen Merrill), but it cannot always be used. To date, thanks to the firmware updates that have closed the bugs, and the price in the used, I would not recommend the transition to MarkII. sent on March 29, 2022 |
Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-100mm f/4.0 IS Pro Pros: Versatility and excellent IQ Cons: Cost Opinion: There are many 10X zooms, but for the first time we don't have to compromise on optical quality. This 12-100 is so versatile and reliable that it allows you to focus only on photography, you no longer have to think about which lens to use, if you need to branch out, if maybe the focal one is weak etc, you just have to take the car and shoot, because it has no real weaknesses, even at TA the IQ remains very high for all the focal points. The dimensions are challenging, of what we are used to seeing on APSC or FF, but it must be considered that no other lenses are needed since focals of 24 to 200mm are covered, and even the 560gr weight at the end is about the same weight as the two optics I used previously. Excellent stabilizer that I use on an un stabilized Panasonic GH1 body. Unfortunately for us, Olympus makes us pay for this great piece of glass: 1000€ round in the physical store, but it can replace 2-3 excellent optics that together would cost equal or more. Used every now and then you find it, but always at a high price. sent on October 21, 2020 |
Sigma SD1 Pros: micro-contrast, tonal passages, color response, image quality, build quality. Cons: Possible issues with AF on some models, lack of live-view. Opinion: The Sigma SD1 is an SLR with several years on the rump that however it still makes sense to consider and sometimes prefer the new mirrorless model SDQ. The heart of this reflex is the Foveon sensor of generalezione Merrill, capable of an image quality worthy of a film with low sensitivity, something that is useless even compare to more evolved bayer sensors, which in terms of pure image quality, they cannot any way compete for micro-contrast, tonal nuances and depth cromamtica. I'm not here to repeat known limits that whoever snaps with foveon must embrace and having to find a new workflow that involves the development of raw with Sigma Photo Pro software, on this literature is vast and redundant concepts need not be repeated. The problem of SD1, kinda like all SLR cameras with foveon sensor, is to find a model that does not present problems of AF, but if you get lucky as I was, then the SD1 can excite. The build quality is of maximum level, there I shoot with temperatures from +40° to -30° C and after 3 years 6 years and owners, there is no sign of subsiding, the liners are perfect, as well as the feedback of the keys. sent on April 17, 2018 |
