Nikon D700 Pros: JPEG yield, robustness Cons: Live View, Mirror Lift, Autofocus Opinion: Bought used as a training ship, in excellent condition and at a ridiculous price (400 E), it was love at first glance. The returned jpegs are much higher, for my taste, than those of the D750 bought new after some time, and even slightly superior to those of the D810, another camera in my possession. The best, in the Nikon field that is not strictly professional, for those who dedicate themselves to generalist photography (panoramas, portraits, still life...), do not have the desire or ability to post-produce and do not need to obtain prints in a format greater than 30x40. So much so that I gave away, still brand new, the 750... Those who, like me, are very dedicated to macro, can have some problems. The live view runs out of battery in a very short time, it's primordial and shooting with the mirror raised to avoid micro-blur is very cumbersome; I report the exact problems described by a forumer in a thread I opened: "Operating in Live View with the mirror up, when it shoots it closes the mirror, raises it, opens the shutter, closes it and then raises the mirror to return to Live View, this... It produces strong vibrations and moreover, at the time of shooting, the view on the monitor remains obscured for a very long time". And yet, even these problems are certainly surmountable (if you are interested, read the last post of this discussion: https://www.juzaphoto.com/topic2.php?l=it&t=4389531&show=2 ). In fact, I only use the D810 if I foresee conspicuous croppings. Partial conclusion, having never shot in Raw:, highly recommended for those who need to work in jpeg, do not need to print beyond certain formats and do not devote themselves to photographic genres that require very fast and precise AF. In these areas, the grade is 10 laude. With the intention of buying another specimen, if in the same condition as the one in my possession. sent on November 28, 2023 |
Venus Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5x Ultra Macro Pros: Construction, materials, sharpness, bokeh, weight, price Cons: Use limited to super-enthusiasts with great patience (and time available) Opinion: Purchased with dedicated Laowa ring flash, after the first shots I had decided to send it back to Amazon. The advice and encouragement of a forumer led me to keep it. It is cheap, but it is absolutely necessary a sturdy tripod, a good head (I have Sirui MT 2204 with dedicated head), a good sled (better if excellent, I have Nisi, but I will have to change it). Forget about photos on the fly, it is a lens whose depth of field is zero and for which the maf, in unprogrammed photos, should be performed approaching or moving away from the subject that, with RR from 2.5 to 5X, will be only a few cm away from the front lens ... The ring flash that Laowa provides with the addition of about sixty euros, is highly discouraged: although tightened with force, it falls continuously and must also be connected to a power bank; In addition it has all the drawbacks of the ring fingers. Needless to specify that the lens is useless except for macros with the specified RR. That said, in his specific field, he has no comparison; perhaps the Canon, which still costs three times. The amazing bokek, the sharpness above all suspicion and the all-metal construction, make it an indispensable must for fans of extreme macro (and patience). The rating is 9.5, but only because the front cap is just a... cork, identical to that of oil bottles, otherwise I would have given a nice 10. sent on March 21, 2023 |
Sigma 105mm f/2.8 Macro DG OS HSM Pros: price, nuanced, sharpness Cons: cold colors, tragic maf at minimum distances. Opinion: Used on Nikon D700 and D750. The excellent sharpness makes it very suitable for portraits and panoramas. For macros at minimum distances, turn elsewhere, I do not know if it is a problem of my new purchased specimen, but also the manual maf is highly problematic: while disabling all the automatic mechanisms, including of course those of the cameras, at the time of shooting it resumes blurring and "noiseing" and it is not clear why. I'm seriously thinking about replacing it with Nikkor 105 mm macro... sent on May 11, 2021 |
