canon_75-300_v3Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III

Pros: Lightness, focal excursion, compatibility with FF

Cons: Lack of stabilization, sharpness at TA, chromatic aberrations

Opinion: I bought it back in 1999, just released, for analog EOS. Back then it was a standard telezoom for amateurs and for the time had more than adequate performance. Even now I find it difficult to give a completely negative judgment, perhaps because I consider it a kind of gift made to me by time, since I found it between the aging without taking out a penny when I switched to digital EOS (first 450D and then 70D). He still honestly does his job for amateur use, albeit with many limitations, and manages to produce good shots. Of course the sharpness is very far from that of a professional optics, especially at TA, and the chromatic aberrations always lurking. It produces rather soft images and gives its best between f8 and f11; with due post-production it provides more than satisfactory results. From its lightness and the consequent handling. The biggest flaw is the lack of stabilization that forces fast times or forces the use of the tripod. Mounted on an easel for photos of architectural and artistic details or some shots of urban views is still useful to me. I'd like to try it on a FF.

canon_efs_15-85Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

Pros: Versatility, lightness and handling, clarity at the shortest focal points, build quality

Cons: Af unreliable, barrel drift, chromatic aberrations, list price

Opinion: Objective that offers a strong feeling of quality for materials, solidity and construction quality, just affected by the drift of the barrel that in practice disturbs only for accentuated inclinations, very close to the vertical. Freehand, by the way, the hand holds the lens and therefore blocks any movement. Using the tripod you can safely overcome it with an elastic band of just over 5 euros. He is a good all-rounder: in the travel photograph once mounted on the car (I have a 70D) you no longer take it off, it weighs relatively little, it is not bulky and therefore easy to handle. I noticed excellent sharpness (almost from L series) to shorter focal points, from 15 to 20, as long as not at TA, while at medium and high focal points the performance drops, still remaining better than those of the kit lens. The most negative aspect is the focus, which I would call un reliable. It did not always happen, but in some situations that I have to study better, it failed to focus subjects at medium high distances (from 100 m in there). No problem, however, with very close or otherwise low distances. It also suffers from chromatic aberrations. The list price of 799.99 euros proposed by Canon is not valid. The value for money can become favorable under 600 euros or by purchasing the used lens (I saw that it can be found from 300 to 450 euros).
