Reviews of cameras, lenses, tripods, heads and other accessories written by Kelly15

Microsoft Translator  The following opinions have been automatically translated with Microsoft Translator.

fujifilm_xt5Fujifilm X-T5

Pros: Absolute excellence as far as the APSC format is concerned.

Cons: Few details.

Opinion: Let me start by saying that for me the X-Trans file is the best the market offers today in APSC, so I could be biased. The 40 mpx of the X-T5 is gorgeous. Workable, with a grain that when present (from ISO 3200 onwards) remains pleasant and sufficient even for fairly pushed crops and in any case easily solvable with today's software. They really put the links in the chain downstream to the test. Comprehensive features: nothing is missing. Just look at the data sheet. Functionality/ergonomics at very high levels but they have to please. Nothing is missing apart from the stacked sensor but for that there is more. Features such as double slots, efficient stabilization, waterproofing and a wide range of optics, including third-party ones, make it an ideal tool for professional use. Quite high cost but much lower than the other top of the range. I found the flaws in reference to an autofocus that is not always perfect in tracking and in the obsolescence of some zoom lenses of the kit which, despite being of excellent quality, show the years of design they have on their shoulders. I don't feel at all the lack of predisposition for battery grips which I make up for, in the rare cases of need using long and heavy lenses with one of the grips on the market. A warning: I don't recommend Adobe software that, although improved a lot, does not in my opinion do full justice to X-Trans files. Ultimately, a vote tending to the maximum as soon as they have perfected the AF and modernized the optics a little.

viltrox_af13_f1-4Viltrox AF 13mm f/1.4

Pros: Excellent optical performance, as well as the construction level.

Cons: Slight tendency to flare.

Opinion: Optics that were missing in the Fuji system. The nearest fixed wides are 14, but it is 2.8, and 16mm. The equivalent 20mm are very important to me and mark the boundary beyond which I begin to have completely personal compositional problems. This 13mm therefore marks for me an alternative to the excellent 14mm Fuji but opens "only" up to 2.8. The construction is of an excellent level, I would say like the best Fuji. Diaphragm ring clickable to third aperture, mechanically very precise as well as the manual focus ring. Lightning-fast focus in all conditions. Splendid optical yield with high resolution from the center to the edges from the maximum aperture. The top is reached at 2.8 and remains up to 8.0 / 11 then the diffraction (perhaps) comes into play and you lose a minimum thread of sharpness. And I'm talking about 40 mpx. Geometric distortions practically absent without the need for software corrections, such as chromatic aberrations also very well corrected. Tonal rendering in line with the Fuji lenses I own, so no need to intervene on the Jpeg to standardize it. The main defect (and perhaps the only) a certain predisposition to flare in adverse conditions. I therefore recommend constantly using the hood supplied which, among other things, is made of metal. Among the defects I also insert the scarce blazon of the name that will make some purists turn up their noses. To me, however, it straightened out after seeing the price that for once remains on planet Earth. The filter diameter goes out of my standards and that's a shame. I would have preferred it the same as that of 10-24. I would have preferred it to be tropicalized but I do not make a drama of it. In conclusion, an optics that has greatly satisfied me and that gives me confidence in the brand. We will see if reliability and any need for assistance in the future can be a problem. Considering the price, 10 out of 10.

tamron_35-150_f2iiiTamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD

Pros: A lot of things.

Cons: No.

Opinion: I state that I bought this lens after realizing that 90% of the photos I take are in this focal range. It therefore became interesting a single lens, perhaps to be combined with a 20mm or a super wide zoom for particular situations. Let's start with the negative aspects that as far as I am concerned are limited to size and weight. It is a price to pay when they combine wide focal range and high brightness. All in all everything is manageable quite well and this Tamron is well balanced once mounted on A7RIV, optics with which I made the first test shots. Well centered and without offsets to any of the focal lengths tested. In the gallery, which I promise to update and integrate, I have included some shots to check the sharpness at FULL APERTURE. Shots imported in C1 and not processed in any parameter. Taking into account the qualitative loss that comes from loading at mpx max. 10 I would say that the performance is of a high level in my opinion equal to or higher even to fixed optics of clear fame. This performance even increases by diaphragm a little. Excellent blur rendering, as well as correction of chromatic and geometric aberrations. But here I'm not sure if there is the paw of C1. Seeing AC absent and no distortion I doubt. A certain vignetting is present, always at TA, but in general I like this effect and it is still easily correctable. Resistance to the flare for me very good: it is seen in conditions of extreme backlight but the halos you have to go looking for them. What can I say? Excellent optics that will certainly not be appreciated by those who love extreme compactness but very versatile. A side effect that can cause is the abandonment of many fixed optics that you already have by relegating them to dust on the shelf. Like all opinions, mine are obviously personal and dictated by a first use in a day with finally a splash of sunshine. The price, although high, I consider it well proportionate to the object and will certainly settle at a slightly lower level in some time. Those who want more details can write me in MP. After a slightly more extensive use I confirm in full my first impressions. With particular reference to the quality of the blur that I personally consider delicious and at the level of the best fixed lenses at equivalent focal lengths.

sigma_dn35_f2cSigma 35mm f/2 DG DN C

Pros: Construction, optical performance.

Cons: Lack of function button.

Opinion: I would like to start by pointing out that my judgment relates to the optics mounted on the A7RIV. Excellent resolution across the field since f/2.0. It reaches a maximum of 4.0 onwards and then drops by diffraction from 11.0. I put first the defects that consist of a fairly high drop in light and distortion that, however, are perfectly compensated by software as is now the case on almost all modern optics. Let's get to the pros by starting by saying that I haven't seen chromatic aberration and that the uniformity of yield in the field is really excellent. What strikes most, beyond the extreme sharpness, are the quality of the blurry and pleasantness of the same on the different floors. It reminds me a lot of another member of the Sigma DN family, 45 2.8 and while not reaching the same creaminess comes very close to him. Compared to 45mm it also loses that characteristic less sharpness at close distances due to the undercorrect of spherical aberration. Here even at reduced distances the sharpness is excellent and much of the "paste" that characterizes this optics is preserved. Mechanically it's a gem. Entirely made of metal, soft and very precise MAF ring as well as that of diaphragms. Metal cap for me useless but it is included in the package. VERY fast and precise MAF in both AFS and AFC. The price is a gem. Considering I come from Sigma DN 1.2 I can make a comparison. Of course we start from f/2.0 and I can say that as far as I am concerned the performance is overlapping. We obviously lose a diaphragm and a half of maximum brightness but we gain in weight and size and, as mentioned, less than half the price. I mean, I give a 10- and I think it's fully deserved. (the less I put it because, for psychological reasons only, I would have preferred a better non-software correction of light loss and distortion). In the gallery you can find some shots. No posts and 50% of the quality loaded for space reasons.

sigma_85_f1-4dn_artSigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art

Pros: So many things.

Cons: Bearing distortion.

Opinion: Excellent construction. Tropicalization. Full barrel controls. Weight, size and cost well proportioned. Turning to the optical characteristics I would say that we enter the field where this optics impressed me the most. Very high sharpness from the whole opening and from edge to edge. This will certainly also be thanks to an excellently successful and centred specimen. No chromatic aberration at all openings. Excellent flare resistance, but I always use the lampshon and I almost never use filters. Consistent and uniform quality at all shooting distances. Where impressed me the most, however, was in the quality of the blurry. It really is a unique lens, at least for my experience. In the sense that it manages to offer that detachment of the planes and that softness that I seek without losing in saturation, in fullness of colors. It's a hard feeling for me to explain, but even with other optics I happened to get a very nice blurry. But always at the cost of a certain loss of color charge, fullness of tones. With this DN instead no, and I really like this feature. The only defect is a certain bearing distortion. Unusual for this focal length where it's easier to find it in a barrel, I think. However, it is not problematic in my opinion as it can be easily corrected automatically and visible only with certain mainly architectural subjects. Specific that I don't do video footage, so any features in that field are not able to evaluate them.

sigma_100-400dnSigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS C

Pros: Weight and compactness. Global yield and sharpness.

Cons: Lack of accessories. Partial waterproofing. It does not mount multipliers in version E.

Opinion: I use long focals not very frequently and mainly for landscape photography. Given sony's lack of affordable long-quality focal points, I bought the Sony 100-400 GM at the time. Excellent optics in many respects but wasted in my hands given the infrequent use. When this Sigma came out I was very interested in the weight and the price but I was doubtful about the quality level. Then I had the opportunity to do some tests with the specimen of one of my acquaintances. I was immediately impressed by the optical performance achieved. I speak of sharpness, blurry rendering and pleasantness of the images that are certainly not inferior to what my Sony GM had accustomed me. This Sigma pays a third of the diaphragm as the maximum brightness towards Sony but even this is not detrumining to me. I have therefore proceeded with the trade-in which allowed me to forfeit a few euros, which were immediately invested. The focus is also fast and precise as well as stabilization is very efficient. I'm not able to judge the fire tracking capability that will definitely be better at Sony but for the photos I take it's not a priority. I'm sorry there's no case and tripod bracket that these stingers could have included. I can't say about weather resistance but I notice a rubber seal on the optical plug. In the future I can be more comprehensive in describing optical performance. At the moment they seem to me to be of an absolute level but of course I have to evaluate the behaviour in different areas. After a certain period of use, always not deepened anyway, I can detect that at the longer focal point the resolution remains very high but that what emerges is a certain loss of micro contrast that makes the images appear less vivid than they should.

sony_fe50_macroSony FE 50mm f/2.8 Macro

Pros: Great overall performance.

Cons: AF slow and noisy.

Opinion: Very excellent optics and generally undervalued. Excellent 2.8 resolution across the field and at all distances. Very little AC, low distortion, and good resistance to flare. Personally, I think it is at 55 1.8 Zeiss level but with less AC and a worse AF. Always noisy because of the type of engine adopted. AF acceptable for generic and landscape photos, from 1m to infinity. For shorter distances AF slow but precise. Light and compact and propati at a fair price.

sigma_14-24_f2-8dnSigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art

Pros: High-performance optics.

Cons: Complicated filter assembly.

Opinion: Used on an A7RIII offers an exemplary yield already from the opening. Spectacular from 14 to 20mm becomes excellent "only" from 20 to 24mm. Make it extraordinarily even to the edges. Slight distortion to the wider focal lenses that corrects in sw without problems. Perfect coma correction along with excellent backlight seal. Very nice and star-like blur as well. In short, it is difficult to find defects from a qualitative point of view. Having opening 2.8 can replace a battery of wide angles even of blasone. Mechanically a jewel as custom Sigma and reasonable weight, less than 800gr. Very complete barrel controls with function button and af/mf switch. Flaws, let's see. Here it does not mount circular screw front filters but is equipped with a rear filter holder for jelly filters. At the moment difficult to find in Italy. Of course, the polarizers will not be used in this way except in a fixed way. For the latter better to consider slab filter systems that are quite expensive. Honestly, i can't think of anything else.

sigma_45_f2-8dnSigma 45mm f/2.8 DG DN C

Pros: Compact, light, made very good. Perfect construction.

Cons: Nothing but the design features.

Opinion: Particular optics. Made very good all over the frame already from TA. It improves further by closing the iris as logical to expect. It gets a little soft especially at TA at close range, let's say under the meter. But I don't think it's a flaw. Where it excels is in the blurry that makes the yield of this lens unique. Creamy as few gives materiality to images. They've corrected the spherical aberration per project. Not high contrast. Hard to get him out of the car! Too pleasant. UPDATE AFTER THOROUGH USE. Spectacular. I confirm what was said earlier, perhaps more emphatically. Optics that deserve a body of its own, if possible. If necessary, the softness under the meter can be corrected by Elpro 3 lens or similar. This gives the lens superior clarity.
