Reviews of cameras, lenses, tripods, heads and other accessories written by Arnosiemons

om_system_om1OM System OM-1

Pros: Portability & features

Cons: None so far

Opinion: Have been working with this gem for some months now. Been working with MFT since 2013 besides my Nikon gear and have seen a steady but impressive development of this formula. For me the OM-1 (and its lenses) is all about portability while being able to produce high quality output that can compete with camera's with a larger sensor. In my opinion OM-Systems succeeded to produce a camera that does just that. There is so much to tell about this camera. To sum this review up: Fast AF, doing great on high ISO, customization and creating presets works well. Button layout. Battery life. I can go on and on.

nikon_afp70-300vrNikon AF-P DX 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G VR

Pros: Lightweigt, sharpness, VR & price

Cons: None for the money

Opinion: Recently purchased this little gem secondhand for €170,00. This lens is quite something. Yes, it is all plastic, but who cares for the price one pays... AF is fast enough when coupled with my D7200. The IQ is surprisingly good. Since I mainly shoot wildlife I do not care too much about corner sharpness. The biggest pro is its weight. Normally I go around carrying about 4.5 kilograms when taking my D4 & Nikkor 300mm F/2.8 plus converters, so having this lens combined with the D7200 is like a walk in the park. Being able to shoot handheld over longer periods of time is a big plus too. Being a 4.5-6.3 this lens is not the fastest but even in lowlight and some adjustments 'in post' it works for me. It is a lens which I immediately would recommend to exploring beginner photographers. Or to guys like me who now and then want to go out with less weight to lug around..

nikon_afs300_f4pfNikon AF-S 300mm f/4 E PF ED VR

Pros: Weight

Cons: Bit of a mixed bag with converters

Opinion: Recently purchased this lens as a welcome addition to my much heavier 300mm F/2.8 VR. I love this lens on either an APS-C or a fullframe camera. It's so much fun carrying a 300mm lens that weighs about the same as a 24-70mm F/2.8. IQ is great when stopped down a bit. When shooting wide open there is little DOF to work with. The 300mm seems to handle the 1.4 TC pretty well. When making use of the limiter there is not muching slowing down on the AF-speed. My 300mm lens seems to do best wide open (F/6.7) when using the 1.7 TC. In really low light situations I will still be using the much faster 300mm F/2.8 lens, but this beauty comes to use in almost every other situation.

nikon_d3sNikon D3s

Pros: Build quality, fast AF, low noise performance, ergonomic, button lay-out.

Cons: None

Opinion: One of the most reliable camera's I have owned. Currently working with a Nikon D4 but I decided to once more buy a D3s as a backup camera. I have worked extensively with the D3S in the past so for me it is the best option when it comes to owning a second camera that I can fully trust in the field. Balances well with longer and heavier lenses and can take a beating due to its sturdiness and weather sealing.

nikon_300vr_f2-8Nikon AF-S 300mm f/2.8 G ED VR

Pros: Image quality, works very well with TC's, fast AF, can be used in all sorts of photography

Cons: none

Opinion: Have been working with this lens for some time. It is one of the best I ever used, period. I do not mind the weight and use the lens (often with TC 1.4 or TC 2.0) handheld most of the times. I rarely use VR so I can not comment on that too much. For me it works well enough in situations I need VR. This Nikkor 300mm and my Sigma 500mm prime are always in my backpack with either the Nikon D4 or Nikon D500. The lens performs great on both camera's but needed a bit of calibration when TC's are attached. Overall, I'm very content with this lens. Besides the IQ I like the fact that I can use the lens as either a 300mm, a 420mm (with TC 1.4) or as a 600mm (with TC 2.0 III). I do almost not see any degradation in quality when using a TC (when properly fine-tuned/calibrated).

sigma_500_f4-5Sigma 500mm f/4.5 EX DG HSM

Pros: Manageable weight, very sharp from F/5.6, fast AF on my Nikon D500 and Nikon D4. Sturdy build. Lens foot/handle is long enough to carry the lens comfortably.

Cons: Shot wide open not too good. Tends to hunt when focussing at 'infinity'. Absorbs heat and cold. That's why I use a lens cover.

Opinion: I will never part with this lens and definitely will try to find a used one when this one should break. I found mine in mint condition for a fair price. I have been using this lens on Nikona camera's: D800, D500 and D4. It needed a little fine tuning on the D500. Due to the weight I can easily carry this lens with a carbon-fiber monopod and tilthead all day. I also use it on a tripod, but most of the times I use this lens handheld. I use my elbows or knee for stabilisation. This works out great for me. Addendum: Had this lens serviced by Sigma the other day. They replaced the PCB (Print Board) in the lens with an upgraded version and then adjusted the focus mechanism (also in the lens). From F/5 the lens now is already very sharp. Even at F/4.5 it does not disappoint, but that is hard when shooting handheld.
