nikon1_aw1Nikon 1 AW1

Pros: It should be an underwater camera without the need for a diving suit, one of the few cameras of this type that shoots in RAW.

Cons: Water has entered the screen and it no longer works.

Opinion: After having been happy with the Nikon 1 V2 since my Canon digital ixus with diving suit after many years of use had broken, since I no longer practiced the sub I thought of getting this camera, unlike with the V2 I did not find much with the autofocus of the AW1 but otherwise I liked it, The problem is that at the second summer of use water entered the screen (I would have feared at most it could enter the memory and battery compartment or the lens-camera attachment that have protections but must be able to open or detach I would never have imagined it entered the screen that should be sealed) and now it no longer works, I used it simply doing sea watching with some rare apnea of maximum 3/4 meters so certainly not particularly conditions Problems for a machine that should be able to reach 14 meters submerged.

pentax_k20dPentax K20D

Pros: Double ring, pentaprism viewfinder (and despite what is reported in the card with 100% coverage), tropicalized body, sensor stabilization, image quality as long as you stay at low ISO and do not open the shadows.

Cons: Autofocus, definitely obsolete in terms of high ISO and the ability to open shadows, can't control the apertures of the new electronic aperture lenses (but I don't think anyone aims to buy this camera to spend little and then go and buy one of these lenses).

Opinion: Bought to replace the Ist DS which was an entry level model that lacked the double ring to control shutter speeds and apertures, the camera remained my main camera from 2009 to 2018 and it turned out to be much superior also for the image quality that being at 100-200 ISO is very good, the 14 megapixel sensor also allows discretely pushed crops (although obviously not in the same way as the new sensors from 24 megapixels without anti-aliasing filter), the autofous is poor and often risks making mistakes; when I bought it it certainly had various advantages especially for those who generally use manual focus for a not very high price then it was definitely outdated after not even that long (in Pentax it was the K5 came out not many years later that completely destroyed it for high ISO and aperture of the shadows), if you have it it can certainly still give satisfaction but if you want to buy it consider its limits and if it is not the case to spend something more for a more modern camera that has all other capabilities regarding ISO and the ability to open the shadows, if you want to try an old Pentax spending little (although more than for this one) I would say to forget the K20D and the K7 and focus on the K5.

pentax_k1_iiPentax K-1 Mark II

Pros: Ability to withstand high ISO, 2 rings plus a third even if less immediate, adjustable screen, stabilized sensor, tropicalized.

Cons: Some types of lenses for Pentax FF are not currently produced and are difficult to find in used, for those looking for a camera with very responsive autofocus is not the right machine.

Opinion: Taken in August 2018 to replace the K20D as my main machine I find it excellent, it holds up very well at high ISO also thanks to the noise reduction on the RAW that some do not like but I find it very useful, in addition to the double ring that I already had on the K20D also has a third ring where you can put various adjustments based on a nearby wheel, it is not immediate like the classic rings but still allows you to change some settings quickly enough, I often put it on ISO but it is also convenient to do some things without entering the menu, the photos I almost always do as a viewfinder but in certain situations such as photographs razor ground with wet ground or directly above the water it is really convenient to have the adjustable screen that I previously did not have. It also has the possibility of APSC cropping (in which a frame also appears in the viewfinder to signal the shooting area) which is convenient when I use it with lenses built for this format and that do not cover beyond (sometimes I happen to use it with some of these I try to still have a few more megapixels than the K20D but above all it is much higher ISO side) making light files since they consider only the area of the APSC format and therefore they take up little space, the autofocus is not very fast but unlike that of the K20D it is precise.

nikon1_70-300vrNikon 1 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR

Pros: Stabilization, weight and size, image quality.

Cons: Hard to find.

Opinion: Excellent lens corresponding to a 189-810mm f/ 12-15 that you can easily carry around your neck without feeling it and that thanks to the fact of being collapsible is very easy to carry around occupying little space in the backpack or bag, the optical quality is excellent working very well already at TA, the stabilization necessary in freehand use (the way I use it) since the Nikon 1 are not stabilized works very well (if one wants to use it on tripods it also has the attack but in my opinion it is fine for freehand use) and I think that together with a V2 (as I have) or even better (if I can find it at a good price with viewfinder and handle) to a V3 is perfect for traveling bird photography, the only problem is to find it, I followed it for some time on ebay before being able to take it.

nikon1_v2Nikon 1 V2

Pros: Increase in equivalent focal lengths thanks to the small sensor, weight and size, presence of viewfinder, good grip, cost.

Cons: You can't go up much with ISO but it's something you'd expect from a machine with a small sensor.

Opinion: Bought once the system 1 had already been discontinued by Nikon to use it with the 70-300 for itinerant bird photography and I am absolutely satisfied, as long as I accept its characteristics (it is a machine that must be used at low ISO so for photography of subjects posed preferably with the sun) is really fine, you can take it hours around your neck without feeling the weight and it is also easy to put everything in a backpack taking up little space (thanks also to the fact that the 70-300 is collapsible), I imagine that the V3 is superior but those complete with everything would have cost me much more than the lens and also considering to take separately at least the car and the viewfinder (doing without the adapter for me useless but also the handle) however it came to prices not much lower instead this for 250 euros had also included the 18.5mm with its hood, an original case for this pair and a 32gb memory.
