sigma_85_f1-4artSigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

Pros: Extreme sharpness all over the frame already at 1.4, nice coarse MAF bezel, standard lens hood, cosmetic

Cons: Weight and dimensions, filters 86mm, USB dock

Opinion: I had to calibrate Canon's camera support (Canon 5d II) before I could calibrate the lens with the appropriate USB dock (which would cost €50, but fortunately I borrowed it). Initially the AF went for its own business and it was not only a problem of micro-adjustment in the room. In my case it was also a room problem, which however with other 1.4 and 1.8 lenses were never there. After a long drawing between Canon assistance in Bologna and Sigma in Milan, I finally could use this lens to the full. Now the AF is accurate and fast. For now for me it is the definitive on this focal. Vignetting and chromatic aberration at 1.4 are easily read and solvable in PP. of sharpness is impossible to ask for more. The blur is "modern" and "cold". This is neither pros nor cons, it is just so, may like it or not. Maybe too easy to hate for those 10 years ago have spent €2000 for the Canon 1.2 II, who knows!

tamron_15-30vcTamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC USD

Pros: Very sharp, reduced vignetting, reduced or non-existent distortion in the 15-24mm range, Mighty

Cons: Weight and footprint, no screw filters, very vulnerable front lens, annoying distortion at 30mm, 15mm are only on paper

Opinion: I used this lens for a few years before moving on to the Canon 16-35 f4 IS. The Tamron is really bulky, I often left it at home preferring the fixed, but when I wore it with me I was always satisfied with the shots. Compared to the aforementioned Canon, I think is sharper and much less vignette, despite being a 2.8! The 5mm of difference seem few, but sometimes they feel. The build quality doesn't look great, or better not by the feeling of robustness that give Canon's high end lenses. I recommend it to those who are particularly oriented to these focal lengths, otherwise, if you have 2 or 3 other lenses in your backpack, maybe you will pass the urge and prefer something lighter.
