Reviews of cameras, lenses, tripods, heads and other accessories written by Aricafoix

canon_50_f1-4Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

Pros: Lightweight, construction, fast and silent AF, very sharp when stopped down, great bokeh

Cons: Soft wide open (but some may also like it), lens hood not included, CA wide open

Opinion: This is a great lens to carry around, I wanted a fast lens and this was the one. Very useful on low light conditions, excellent for portraits (specially on APS-C bodies). You have to stop it down to get a sharper image. The AF motor is very silent and you have full time manual (this is great specially on low light conditions to help to the AF system). The construction is great, much better that the 50mm f/1.8, with a metal mount. It's not as cheap as the f/1.8, but you pay for better construction and quality. Not outstanding, but still a great lens.

canon_70-200_f4Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM

Pros: Low price, fast and precise AF, sharp, non-CA, lightweight, construction

Cons: Nothing from lens itself, but tripod ring not included.

Opinion: This was my upgrade from the 70-300mm non-L. I don't know where to start: first I noticed that the construction is excellent, it deserves the "red-L-ring". The image quality is just fantastic, it can be used even at f/4 and the image isn't so soft like other lenses. The AF is very fast and very accurate. I can't complain about it's non-IS or just f/4 aperture, for this price it's just fantastic as it is. I wish that it would come with the tripod ring included. It can be used for portraits, wildlife and events.

canon_70-300isCanon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

Pros: Low price, IS

Cons: Soft over 200mm, slow AF, rotating front element, lens hood not included

Opinion: This was my first "non-kit" lens, it's a great lens to extend your focal lenght, it's useful for portraits, events and big wildlife. The IS was very useful. But after some months using it I noticed it falls and tried to deal with it: I rarely exceeded 200mm, when photographing birds I had to use f/8 or narrower to get a sharp image (slow speed or high ISO needed to compensate). I sold it and bought the 70-200mm f/4 L non-IS (this is the only thing that I miss from the 70-300mm), I recommend to save a little bit more and go for the 70-200mm.
