![]() | Nikon Z8 Pros: Autofocus-tracking, burst, robustness Cons: files, overheating, heaviness, exaggerated battery consumption, price Opinion: I decided to have my say, after about 8 months of use as an advanced amateur, mainly birdlife. I started with higher expectations perhaps because, reading around, I let myself be influenced a little too much. I am of the opinion that the strengths do not need to be emphasized too much, they are there where before there was nothing similar at Nikon. Instead, I would like to talk about the cons, especially with regard to the quality of the files I get, in comparison with the Nikon D810 that I have had for many years and which rivals the Z8 with its head, often surpassing it. I don't like the feature of the Z8 files because I find in them an excess of digital processing and in the meticulous details you can see a plasticky effect that is not present in the D810 files. The setting I use in editing is the same, I haven't substantially changed my workflow, I use the same lens and often, for the type of photos I take, I have to do very strong crops: the result with the Z8 files is less natural than the one obtainable with the D810. I repeat, I find an excess of digital processing that disturbs me. And I don't think it's my impression at all. Regarding overheating. I am very disappointed that, despite using a professional CF Express type B card such as the SanDisk Extreme PRO 128 GB, 1700 MB/s read and 1200 MB/s write, shooting with a burst of 15 photos per second, in a climate with a temperature of 26-30 °C, the camera quickly overheats, obviously preventing me from being able to manage the situation as needed (being in the middle of nature, on the trail of an elusive animal and then losing the opportunity to take various photos, is simply unacceptable for a camera that labels itself as professional). If I then think of shooting a high-definition video, the overheating is almost immediate. Does it seem like a professional machine thing? Obviously this will force me to try other memory cards that are perhaps more compatible. But from a flagship, we should not expect this. Along with overheating, the enormous consumption of batteries is also felt strongly. It's not good, even if there are those who say it's normal, I don't think so. A professional-grade machine must guarantee a minimum autonomy much higher than that of the Z8. Regarding the heaviness, at the debut of mirrorless it was said that they would be more compact and lighter due to the absence of the mirror and the implementation of electronics and even the lenses would have the same characteristics. From what I see, Sony is respecting, at least for the camera bodies, this concept. Nikon, with the Z8, seems to me anchored to a DSRL concept rather than mirrorless. The price is excessive for the general quality of the Z8 and for its important flaws, first of all I would say the overheating, then the consumption of batteries and for me the quality of the files compared to the D810. What can I say? I'm happy with the autofocus, although to be honest, it sometimes jams and makes you feel like you're not at all at the top of your game. My conclusion, I emphasize mine, is that the Z8 does not have the characteristics of a professional camera, since it greatly limits the field of action due to the problems indicated and therefore the price is also far above its performance. sent on April 27, 2025 |
![]() | Zeiss Sonnar 135mm f/2.8 (C/Y) Pros: Excellence in construction (I would say seriousness!!), first level optical qualities Cons: I don't remember any Opinion: I add myself to the more than positive comments of other users. I used it for many years with a Contax RTSII Quartz and then with a Contax 167, with results that always left me very happy and made me feel like a photographer! Holding in your hand a lens like this, you understand what is the difference between the constructive philosophy of the past and that of today. I can understand the use of new materials such as plastics, polymers and so on for the construction of new lenses, but using an optical instrument of such great quality and feeling the goodness of the materials is another thing. Then with the advent of digital I gave everything away ... sent on April 05, 2022 |
