sigma_70-200os_sportSigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sport

Pros: Great build quality. Feature packed and adjustable on the Sigma dock. Excellent color rendition, bokeh and tack sharp! Very fast AF and works seemlessly with Sigma 1401tc. I can see no loss of sharpness and hardly loss of AF speed with TC connected. I love my Sigma 500mm F4 Sport but the 70-200mm F2.8 is maybe the best Sigma lens(of many) I have owned.

Cons: Possiblty weight but only for those who shoot for many hours hand held doing something like portrait/wedding photography.

Opinion: No complaints. Great lens! Build quality seems to be bullet proof. Price is very competative compared to Nikon/Canon equivalent. The latest Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 is also very good but the Sigma is highly recommended especially if you have already invested in Sigma systems such as the dock or teleconverters. In Australia if you register directly with the importer there is a 2 year warranty.

nikon_d850Nikon D850

Pros: Dynamic range. Sharpness. Color rendition. Excellent ergonomics in my hand. Weather sealing. Excellent auto focus especially in low light. Many advanced in camera features. Dedicated back button focus. Very good at high ISO considering almost 46mp. 7 frames a second without grip is incredible at almost 46mp.

Cons: Silly 2 different types of card slots. If like me you want the use second card slot as the backup card when on safari, the XQD card is only as good as the SD card for storage and speed of clearing buffer. Should really be 2 XQD cards in my opinion. Stupid prices for OEM battery grip. Despite Nikon advising same processor as D5 I do not think you should believe auto focus is as fast as D5.

Opinion: I have had this camera for almost a year and this is not the perfect DSLR neither do I believe there is such a camera. However, I think this is Nikon's best all around DSLR ever and for most people I cannot think you could want for much better. I rate this camera 9.5/10 because no camera is perfect but the D850 is very close!!! My primary DLSR for the next 5 years! I love my D750 but this camera is 20% better all around. Zero regrets purchasing this camera!

sigma_500_f4os_sportSigma 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Sport

Pros: Build Quality. AF Speed. Color contrast. Bokeh. Sharpness. Weight is well balanced. Adjust-ability on the Sigma Dock. Price compared to the Nikon equivalent.

Cons: As mentioned by others, tripod foot too short though all professional lenses whether OEM or third party should come with a sufficient arca swiss compatible tripod foot.

Opinion: Have previously shot with the Nikon 500mm F4G. The Nikon is a great lens and from what I have seen, so is the Nikon 500mm F4E. So, this is not to say the Sigma is better than the Nikon versions. What I would say is the Sigma is as good from shooting and from viewing images of the Nikon versions and much cheaper than the new version of the Nikon and the same as second hand for the previous version. Time will tell if construction of the Sigma is as good as the Nikon. So far, the Sigma is a fantastic third party option to the OEM versions and the best Sigma lens I have shot with by far!

sigma_17-50_f2-8_osSigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Pros: Value for money, only paid Euro250 direct from the Australian Sigma importer with 24 months warranty. Silent AF on my copy, Fairly quick AF. Light weight with optical stabilization makes it easy to handle. Handy zoom range. Constant F2.8. Build quality good for the money.

Cons: Nothing for me.

Opinion: Great bang for you buck lens. Formerly owned the Sigma 18-35mm Art and I'd say this is almost as sharp but easier to handle due to the light weight and optical stabilization. Selling this lens as I am also selling my APS-C camera. I can only hope to find a similar quality and great value FX lens like this. Will be missed. From my copy I can thoroughly recommend this lens.

nikon_d750Nikon D750

Pros: Weight. Ergonomics, though coming from the Nikon D7000 and D7100 it's feels natural. High ISO Noise control and the quaility of the pixels when there is noise, is easier to smooth out while still retaining more detail that my D7100. Very fast auto-focus and especially excellent low light auto focus. Color rendition. Sharpness/detail more than satifisfying enough when mounted with very good to excellent glass. 6.5 FPS is good enough for birds in flight especially when this camera can get so many in focus.

Cons: Would be nice to have had a dedicated AF-On button though I have assigned AF-L for this action as per my D7100. Only 1/4000th max shutter speed though when I look at the metadata for my images there are only a few birds in flight shot that have exceeded this on my camera bodies that have 1/8000th capability.

Opinion: The cons are only minor and very minor when you compare them to the quality/price ratio for this camera. I use this mainly for bird/wildife photography and am over the moon with it's overall performance. Even when having to commit to a larger crop for bird photo's in PP compared the the Nikon D7100 this still produces higher quaility images. Both my zoom lenses were just plug and play, no adjustments necessary that I have noticed. Is there another camera body out there that I would swap my D750 for? All things considered not one! Love this camera!

sigma_tc2001Sigma 2x TC-2001

Pros: Build quality. Sleek design. Not really a lot of difference between having this mounted on the camera with my 120-300 S Sigma or the naked lens and of course it gives me a cheap way to get 600mm at least for portrait style wildlife shots and action that is not super fast. From what I have seen I would rate this ahead of the 2xTC's from Canon and Nikon when mounted on a 300mm prime lens especially when mounted on my Nikon D750. Others of course will disagree : ) Photo's taken after March/April would give a better indication of the performance as the Nikon d7100 required a AF fine tune of +19 before I started to get the most out of the lens/TC combo. Nikon D750 has not needed any adjustments.

Cons: Birds in flight I prefer the 1.4TC but I can still get pretty good BIF shots with the 2xTC

Opinion: OK, even the very best TC is going to be some sort of compromise over a prime that gives you the same focal length no matter how small that compromise may be. But if we are strickly talking about how this TC performs, I rate is as excellent. Also gives you a bargain 600mm that still renders satisfying detail/sharpness and color even at full zoom. Please remember this TC will currently only perform on a select few Sigma lenses so please see Sigma's website for compatabilty.

sigma_150-600cSigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM C

Pros: Extremely versatile zoom range. Seems to have excellent build quality. Can produce nice sharp images. Nice color rendition. Lots of bells and whistles for the price with zoom lock, focus limiter, 2 OS modes, both focus ring and push/pull zoom actions and customizable with the sigma dock. Light weight for this type of lens with this type of build quality. Excellent for bird and wildlife photographers who are on a budget but still want a lens that can produce great images.

Cons: Can produce some CA and vignetting but this can be managed in PP. Zoom action of both ring and push pull is a bit stiff though this may loosed up a bit with time. Takes to many turns on the zoom ring to go from zoomed in to zoomed out which can add up to shots missed. Focus is a bit slow but I guess within reason for the native apertures involved and the extent of the zoom range. Like my Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 S when carried on a Black Rapid strap the way I do if the various switches are facing your legs it's to easy to knock those switches to a different setting that the one's you have set. Consider that when you accidently knock the focus limiter from 10 meter to infinity to 2.8-10meters and see a bird perched at 25 meters. Go to take the shot and the lens won't focus and by the time you change the focus limiter the subject has flown away.

Opinion: I bought this lens for my girlfriend but took it out for it's first "test drive" mounted on my Nikon D750. Was totally surprised by the quality of images when mounted on this camera body and no micro adjustments were needed to produce nicely sharp images of birds 10 to 30 meters away at least at aperture F8 and this includes inflight shots of birds. My main lens is the Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 Sport, which even with 1.4 and 2X TC's attached focuses faster, zooms faster, has very little or no CA in most shots and renders even more detail. But the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary is going to make one hell of a back up lens if needed. I have seen many images taken with the Sigma 150-600mm Sport and if your not worried about a couple of extra elements inside the lens and the full weather sealing, this contemporary version at about half the price and 1kg lighter looks like a winner. Really quite amazing value and quality for money from what I have seen so far.

nikon_d7100Nikon D7100

Pros: I have owned this camera for about 8 months. Overall build quality seems good so far. Decent amount of adjustability and customization in the menus. Handling is good for me. Flash sync has proved to be fairly good in difficult light/conditions. 24 megapixels good for cropping. Sharp in good light. Shutter speed to 1/8000 if needed. Pleasing color and contrast in good light. Very good value now for the quality. Can be had in Australia for about AUD$1050-1100. Dual memory card slots. Continuous shooting and buffer good enough for me when using good memory cards and I mainly shoot birds. I am currently using SanDisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s 32 GB which are certainly an improvement in this respect over my previous SanDisk 45MB/s. APC crop factor can be handy for bird photography.

Cons: Had to replace the first copy I bought after a few days due to failure to auto-focus. This second copy still has issues when it fails to auto-focus and I have to manual focus with the lens to try and not miss the shot. Maybe this problem is due to weak lens mounts at the camera end. D7*** series Nikons prone to heavy front or back focus so some copy's can require much experimentation to AF Fine-Tune with every lens. I have had to AF Fine-Tune to +19 depending on the attachments(lens/TC). My biggest issue is noise. At ISO 500 there is noticeable noise and at 800 and beyond there is a lot of noise which becomes even worse in difficult light. This then means I have to use noise reduction in LR on many shots up to plus 75. This then softens considerably what once a sharp image in un-processed RAW. Here is a shot that has had to have plus 70 noise reduction in LR. http://www.juzaphoto.com/galleria.php?t=1228878&l=en It is still a decent shot but you can image how sharp the subject was in un-processed RAW. The background is however terrible without NR.

Opinion: Very good camera for the money these days. Probably the best value to quality ration APC DSLR on the market(at the moment). Produces sharp images with pleasing color and contrast in good light. 'Extra' reach for bird photography with crop sensor(depends on how you look at it). Not without it's issues. The auto-focus failure is something I have read about elsewhere so not restricted to my experience. Can really struggle with noise in anything over ISO 400-500 especially in difficult light which then requires a lot of NR in PP diminishing what may have started out as a very sharp/detailed image.
