![]() | Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM II Pros: Compact, lightweight, sharp, excellent autofocus and stabilizer performance. Cons: Not very intuitive distance scale display, focus that can only be changed when the camera body is powered. Opinion: Among the many 70-300s I've tried (old Canon, stabilized or not, Sigma, Tamron...) it is without a doubt the best quality as far as image quality is concerned. Compact and solid construction, not too heavy, very efficient stabilizer, fast and silent focusing although unfortunately not very comfortable in some situations since it is electro assisted. Ideal for completing a lightweight and efficient setup. sent on April 18, 2024 |
![]() | Canon 1D Mark IV Pros: Pro body, burst, crop factor, battery life, charm. Cons: Weight, a bit of noise (both on the image and on the shot!), resolution only discreet. Opinion: Among my camera bodies there is also a Canon 1D Mark IV. A piece of history of Japan as well as of the red and white house: the last model produced with that particular sensor format, "APS-H" (1.3x), in which only Canon had believed to the end, loved and hated, but which had some very interesting technical aspects, such as a slimmer mirror mechanic capable of downloading incredible bursts of 10 frames per second already in 2009. I use it little, so much so that it is in excellent condition and does not count over 50,000 shots, nothing for a flagship body ... so little as to push me to think of giving it to someone who could exploit it more than me ... So I'm going to take it back, maybe to see if the battery is charged or who knows... And every time, punctually, when I hold it, hand and camera body almost fit together, enter into an indissoluble and irresistible symbiosis, instantly transmitting that feeling of indestructibility, promptness and agility of use that only a perfectly balanced and designed body can give, as if in an instant it wanted to entice you to be used. And so it ends up that I promptly change my mind: I put it back in its corner ... waiting for the next opportunity when he can show off all his value. Goodnight monster! sent on February 07, 2023 |
![]() | Samyang XP 10mm f/3.5 Pros: Construction, focal (of course), sharpness, geometric correction. Cons: Weight, price, brightness not exaggerated. Opinion: In the afternoon I got this Samyang 10mm f/3.5, which I will use on Canon 5d4 and 6d modified for astronomy... What about it? It looks well built, vignettes and distorts little and is also quite sharp already at full opening up to the corners... With the rainy weather these days (and quarantine) I could not do very serious tests.... I do not know how useful 10mm of focal, the perspective is amplified enormously with nearby objects that become huge, for now I was used to 12mm, which are already so much stuff.... You will have to learn how to manage him too, surely there will be fun! I reserve the right to update the review after serious tests on the outside. sent on March 28, 2020 |
![]() | Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 HSM Art Pros: Sharpness, colours, absence of chromatism, well-controlled distortion, "anticlockwise" zoom bezel, Canon style. Cons: Overall dimensions, weight, weight, weight, sensitivity to side lights. Opinion: I finally decided to take it! The first impressions are very good, already very sharp at full aperture (usable at 2.8 in Astrofoto focusing carefully, so it's just what I needed), beautiful colors, solid, excellent construction, very contained vignetting considering the focal range (I also had Nikon 14-24 and Canon 16-35 2.8 III, and it seems much better than both). The geometric distortion is very well controlled, chromatic aberration does not even know what it is! Between the defects inevitably the weight and a certain sensitivity to the lateral light, that if it manifests in the form of slight halos at night if there are for example side street lamps, but nothing that wide similar do not present. The real flaws remain the weight and the encumbrance: handling it is really challenging, also complicit in a non-exceptional ergonomics (the body is very wide and grasping it with one hand is not very reassuring). But if the performance is these, it is a price you will gladly pay. sent on June 18, 2018 |
![]() | Venus Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D Pros: Zero distortion, compactness, construction, angle of field, F4 sharpness. Cons: Price a bit ' beyond performance, sharpness at the corners at full aperture, vignetting well-present even if similar to the competition. Opinion: I had for a few months this beautiful piece of optics, taken for nighttime use and astronomical view of the brightness and extreme focal, still unmatched on the market. Impeccable construction, precise and fluid ring nuts, compact and handy body, good flare resistance, and virtually nothing distortion are the features that make it very interesting. For me instead that I wanted to use it at night at full aperture some disappointment, since at F2, 8 on the 5d Mark3 the edges were not good enough, with a bit of coma. To use it in this type of shooting in my opinion should be closed at least to F4, but at this point you lose one of its main qualities that is precisely the brightness at this focal. Given this limit in the end I decided to sell it, a little reluctantly, and take (tentatively) a much cheaper Samyang 14 which I use equally to F4 with similar results (except for the field a little lower). sent on June 04, 2018 |
![]() | Canon 20Da Pros: Solid body, liveview, sensitivity to H-alpha (of course), good seal noise up to 1600 ISO. Cons: 8 megapixels are the minimum to make enlargements, small display. Opinion: A very good reflex for astronomical use, sensor with a few pixels but little noise, raw files very well workable. The live-view, although it displays only the center part of the sensor, it is useful to focus, targeting medium-high brightness of stars. Solid body, virtually indestructible, but the weight still content. sent on December 30, 2014 |
![]() | Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L USM Pros: Brightness, construction, focal range, sharpness in the center and the focal superiors. Cons: Resistance to flare requiring attention, sharpness in the corners to the angle setting. Opinion: A good glass, which on second (I speak of the first type), you can find it at an acceptable cost. I've got to replace a 17-40 F4 (of which I was very satisfied) to have a suitable lens for night use. The sharpness is generally good, with excellent focal higher, closing at F4 is not much different from the cheapest 17-40. Instead loses the comparison in resistance to flare than the little brother, albeit with some attention personally be able to live with it. Even the colors are saturated and not as full as those of 17-40, while remaining on good livelli.rnPersonalmente I recommend it, especially if it is below 700 €. rn sent on February 07, 2013 |
![]() | Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Pros: Range of focal lengths covered, AF, colors, sharpness in the center (very good on the whole frame of APS-C), honest resistance to flare and vignetting. Cons: Edges on full frame is not exceptional with a fair amount of chromatic aberration, barrel front a bit 'loose, IS is not very efficient (but it is the first made by canon), front lens which tends to suck up dust if you do not use a filter. Opinion: I have a few days this goal, with the intention of using it as a handyman when I go "light" with the 5dmk2. First impressions are positive: honest and reliable optical, taking up not just reasonable, but acceptable weight. Too bad that the yield on the edge is only fair, while it is quite astounding the central area, corresponding to the size aps-c for instance, really sharp already wide open. To improve the performance a bit 'less convincing enough to work at short focal F5, 6, while at F8 there is a general improvement, especially at the edges. Great AF. Not to use the idea of ??being very strong, in some specimens the front stretches alone if facing down (mine does not, perhaps the rings a little 'tighter). This is my example is a bit 'noisy and helps bit (2 stop with a lot of optimism). In any case run in full the cost of a good used (about 220-270 €). sent on May 08, 2012 |
![]() | Sigma 8mm f/3.5 EX DG Circular Fisheye Pros: Funny, sharp, solid construction, resistance to flare. Cons: Expensive use mooooooolto specific AF slow, light coloring the edges. Opinion: I recently purchased this light version in "DG", so I can only use it to F4. The sharpness is very good already wide open, however, the AF is a bit 'slow, and frankly not very useful, just place it at 1 meter and is already in hyperfocal. I have found that with a 2x doubler can be used as a (perhaps more useful) 16mm F8, which covers the entire frame FF. I hope to soon post some shots done with this rare astronomical optics! sent on April 26, 2012 |
![]() | Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM Pros: Construction, focal range, colors, af, resistance to flare, weight, ergonomics. Cons: Made at the edges. Opinion: I have a few days this light. FF covers a focal range of interesting. Construction and AF flawless, excellent yield to centro.rnMolto, but much less convincingly made the extreme corners, which also appears in the chromatic rather obvious ... perspective seems almost designed for APS-C or APS-H up, fortunately already closing in F4, 5 things improve in a manner perceptible to become excellent from 5.6 in poi.rnE 'true that if you use it for landscaping (like a zoom of this type would suggest), you probably will close a lot of the diaphragm, but from an L series I would have expected a little bit more. Much more successful in my opinion the brother for APS-C 10-22, which covers substantially the same angles, but unfortunately it is not built in a analoga.rnLa distortion that many complain is in my opinion not so dramatically evidente.rnLa vignetting is perfectly corrected by the internal software of the 5D Mk2 and 7D which I use it. sent on January 21, 2012 |
![]() | Canon EF 28-70mm f/2.8 L USM Pros: Colors, fast AF and accurate, beautiful blur "creamy", brightness, strength, resistance to flare, lens hood effectively. Cons: Sharpness is not high (good for F4 to F8 excellent), size, weight, focal range is not very extensive, not weather sealed. Opinion: I have a copy of this lens intake at a flea market. 5Dmark2 of sharpness is more than fair to all opening and rises to more than good closing a bit. ' Solid lens, beautiful colors, good focus, good quality even at the edges, not very extensive but usable focal range. Overall a lens sincere and reliable. If it is found to unbuon price is an attractive all-rounder on FF. sent on October 18, 2011 |
![]() | Tokina AT-X Pro 12-24mm f/4 DX II Pros: Sharpness, construction, color, focal ratio constant, f traditional but very reliable Cons: Flare with the sun high in the vicinity of the scene (version I), pump mechanism of MF impractical, AC a bit 'high at the edges (but correctable). Opinion: Optics very good, excellent construction, I had for some time before moving to Canon10-22 to have a 10mm and a 12, that on APS-C is not yet spintissimo. The focal range is still very usable and you can start with this one lens .... if you do not have to do extreme naturalism! The Canon offered me much more saturated colors and a little 'more contrast, but held in the hand like a toy compared to the Tokina. If the version II has solved the problems of flare and wide looking for a not too extreme but enough space, is a view consigliabilissima! sent on October 16, 2011 |
![]() | Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L II USM Pros: Brightness (obvious), blurred, sharpness and colors. Cons: AF not fast, weight, shape a little 'uncomfortable ... handling it can escape, need to calibrate perfectly the front-back focus if you want to get the maximum. Opinion: Unfortunately the lens in question is not mine, I could use it only for 24 hours for a concert, on loan, but I appreciated the charming qualities that have made it a legend. Amazing portrait lens, I found it more comfortable with the 7D than the 5Dmk2, especially for AF. I had to adjust the front-back focus on both bodies, or showed a clarity not great and a fair amount of chromatic aberration. Once calibrated has changed the face! Blurred beautiful, excellent sharpness (but the 70-200 2.8 is 2 at the same opening is a bit 'better), heavy weight and shape of the barrel a little' uncomfortable and elusive, if you add that handling such a lens is already his hands shake ..... I have not heard the problem of vignetting, very well right from the camera body. The AF power in manual mode, prevents some operations, such as manual focus mode when viewing in live-view. sent on October 09, 2011 |
![]() | Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG HSM Pros: Angle of view (ovvio!), sharpness, absence of distortion, gelatin filters internal economic (though not very practical to use), AF honest. Cons: Low light, vignetting at focal lengths below, resistance to flare is not very high when compared to canon 10-22, Sigma colors (a bit 'yellow), mass and size are not indifferent, front lens a bit' exposed despite the built-in hood. Opinion: I've had it a few weeks and replaced the canon 10-22 because I needed a wide angle lens can be used both on FF than on APS-C. The composition, for those not used, it is not always easy to shorter focal lengths. The copy I have definitely surprised me as to the absence of chromatic aberration and sharpness, always good to the corners already wide open. Too bad that to completely eliminate vignetting (high to 12mm) should be closed to at least F8. If you want a wide angle pushed anyway, I can not recommend it! sent on October 04, 2011 |
![]() | Canon EF 35mm f/2.0 Pros: Small, lightweight, good-looking, especially in the center crystal clear colors "canon". Cons: Af noisy, sharpness at the edges of the FF. Opinion: A little gem, shame about the AF motor that does not value it properly, with a buzz disturbing to say the least, but the image quality is assured. I use it with satisfaction on 7D and 5Dmk2. In cases of brightness is a critical safety. Worth every penny of what it costs (especially if it is used on the 200 euro)! sent on October 04, 2011 |
![]() | Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Pros: Focal range, weight, exceptional clarity at the center, especially the short and medium focal, lightness, USM autofocus, Color "Canon", brightness, good resistance to flare. Cons: Coloring at the corners, under heavy backlighting, vignetting at 24mm. Focal range is not very interesting on APS-C. Opinion: Use this light as a handyman on a 5d mark2, outlet being used, and I am quite satisfied, it is very practical and light combines good focal range to a discrete brightness (much like a constant F4). Fast autofocus, inaudible and precisissimo.rnMi am comfortable there, although sometimes a few millimeters more on the side "tele" could use. rnConfrontato with a canon 35 F2, at equal aperture the sharpness at the center is entirely comparable! There is a slight drop in performance at extreme angles, so that most of FF, where, however, is in any case very valid domostra already stopping down to F5.6, I think might be handy on the APS-H, where he became a interesting 31-110. sent on October 04, 2011 |
