sigma_105macro_osSigma 105mm f/2.8 Macro DG OS HSM

Pros: Sharpness, brightness, compactness, excellent blur

Cons: If you know what you're buying, I'd say nothing

Opinion: A lens that, as a focal equal, is unrivaled in terms of quality / price ratio. A bit plasticky in construction (typical of the Sigma line) but which still makes a feeling of accuracy, solidity and compactness. The padded case and the supplied lens hoods (for FF and APS) confirm this feeling of product quality. Unquestionably bright and sharp, absolutely remarkable even at full aperture, with excellent and pleasing bokeh. I don't use it in macro and I can't judge in this application, but it's a suggestive focal length that lends itself very well in other fields, such as portraits, reportage and detail photos, where I find surprising results of absolute quality. The basic colors are perhaps a little less vivid and warm than the Canon originals and are, in fact, more neutral and balanced: I do not consider this a defect but a characteristic of the lens. The stabilization still seems to work properly and the AF, although a bit noisy and not lightning fast compared to the originals, hooks the subjects well. Ultimately, if you want to try your hand at this type of focal length, at the price with which you buy it today, both new and used (it has recently been discontinued), I don't think you can find better, especially if you don't want to spend double or triple for the original equivalent. From my modest experience, I sincerely recommend it.

canon_100-400Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM

Pros: Versatile, sharp and reliable, it produces excellent quality photos.

Cons: If you know what you are buying, I would say nothing.

Opinion: I needed a lens to complement the 70-200, for sports photography, mainly outdoor (football in particular). I was undecided between the 400 f/5.6 and this 100-400. In the end, I chose the latter because of the versatility of its focal range (it covers all the focal lengths I need), so I can do without bringing a second body on the court. The white barrel is very solid and compact, even for freehand use. The pump-friction movement, after getting the hang of it, is quick to frame the scene and lock on to the subjects. The old generation stabilizer still does its "dirty" job. With the 5d mk3 the autofocus seems to me to work very well and with absolute speed, it is difficult to "cane" the maf. If it happens, it is due to a mistake of the shooter and certainly not of the lens. For what are my standards, I find the quality of the photos unquestionably high, I would say at the levels of the short-toed shot, perhaps at the longer focal lengths it decays a little, but nothing so striking. I always find beautiful colors and excellent sharpness, especially if you close the apertures a bit. It is a lens with which you have to become extremely familiar and that does not forgive you mistakes, but if you hit everything properly, it gives you exemplary shots. It certainly cannot be compared to version II, clearly superior, even in costs! It is not an easy lens as an approach and with an optical design that is perhaps a bit dated, but still valid and that can give great satisfaction, even in photographic fields that I do not practice (birdlife). Personally, in my own small experience, I sincerely feel like recommending it.

canon_5dCanon 5D

Pros: Robust, reliable and still churns out excellent Raw

Cons: Considering that it is a 20-year-old camera, I would say nothing.

Opinion: Sturdy and heavy, a real tank as befits a professional camera. The 12.7 Mpx FF sensor still churns out beautiful, very "crunchy" photographic files, which return a nice color and a decent dynamic range, provided, however, that you use quality lenses and do not do extreme crops. Being a camera from about 20 years ago, you shouldn't expect too many frills and automatisms: you have to have an almost analog approach. Basically, it should not exceed values of 800 ISO, but it is normal for cameras of that period (even if the grain effect, especially on B/W has its own charm, which almost resembles film). The burst and the autofocus system are obviously not comparable to the later models, but if you have a good hand and a good eye, you can do anything with it, without problems. Personally, today I consider it an excellent travel and reportage camera, almost a "compact" (so to speak) solid and resistant, to put a good glass on it, perhaps a nice bright fixary, and go anywhere, without worries.

canon_20dCanon 20D

Pros: Solid, ergonomic and easy to use. A real school camera

Cons: Nothing, considering that it refers to a technology from 20 years ago

Opinion: My first DSLR, robust and reliable, easy to use; in fact, I still own it and it is working, even if it is unused. A "spartan" reflex, produced 20 years ago and so don't expect automatisms and frills of any kind: the 20D forces you to an almost analog approach in its use. This is why I consider it an excellent "school-camera", for those approaching the world of photography, to start shooting and practice without breaking the bank. In my opinion, after learning how to use it thoroughly, you can compare yourself with any superior model. Of course, the 8.2 Mpx are not many and today they could be tender, but this must lead us to frame well and avoid exasperated crops. Raw files are good and light though. The ISO tightness in principle should not exceed 800, with higher values it appears conspicuous grain; unless you intend to obtain it in a targeted way. Limited autofocus but which must be compared to its time, on the other hand a good burst for the time. Very small LCD rear screen, from which the quality of the shot taken is not evident (but this was also a prerogative of the first 1D series). In short, a historic forerunner of the APS C and semi-PRO digital series, but which even today, with the right optics and the right exposure (and above all with the right eye) churns out beautiful and surprising photos.

canon_5d3Canon 5D Mark III

Pros: Considering that it was produced 12 years ago, I would say everything...

Cons: Considering that it was produced 12 years ago, I would say nothing...

Opinion: I state that I have been using the 5D Mk3 for about 10 years, mainly for sports photos, concerts or reportage and that I own other reflex cameras. Tested on the field, considering her age, she really has few rivals. It is a very modern camera, ergonomic in its management and versatile, very solid as befits a professional body. With the right optics and the right expertise, you can tackle all photographic genres, without envying anything to new generation cameras. It has an exceptional sensor, which produces workable and not very heavy files, with a beautiful color. It allows you to shoot even in critical light conditions, with ISO you can easily go up to 3200 without any particular deterioration. The result is brought home with dignity. Quick autofocus in locking on to the subject and sufficiently fast the burst. Like all PRO and FF cameras, the 5d Mk3 is at its best with professional, bright and quality optics. In short, a camera perhaps "dated" for some, but which in my opinion still has its say in the photographic field. Professional or amateur photographer, it is made for those who love to shoot with the heart and are not prey to marketing.

canon_70-200_f2-8Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM

Pros: Sharpness, colors, solidity. Simply put, a must!

Cons: I would say nothing at all... Maybe don't have it!

Opinion: I think there is no need to add too many words for a perspective that is now the history of the Canon brand and about which everything and more has already been said. I assume the best 70-200 ever and certainly the longest-lived, since it went out of production just a year ago. It is certainly no coincidence that the Japanese company has been producing it for about 30 years, practically at the same time as the evolved and stabilized versions. It has to be tested in the field and only then do you realize the quality, reliability and versatility of the optics. Very sharp, very fast AF and spectacular color rendering, I have used it with great satisfaction in the field of sports and reportage photos and I think it should not be missing in the kit of the Pro or the advanced amateur photographer, especially since it is often found at attractive prices in the second-hand market. I preferred the "smooth" version to the stabilized one (which seems to be slightly superior in terms of sharpness) as it does not have any particular needs and is still an extra electronic component, which over time may need assistance. Anyone who says it's heavy better turn to the ML, considering that this is a nice metal barrel, compact and indestructible. I'm fine with it and it's very balanced even for handheld use, at most with a nice monopod for long sessions. The new evolutions have obviously considerably improved the already high standard, but for what is my photography, it fully satisfies me.
