leica_m10rLeica M10-R

Pros: 100% Leica

Cons: For my needs none

Opinion: After about 40 years of amateur photography, I feel like having my say about the Leica M10 R. I came to Leica M after several changes, my first camera was a Yashica Electro 35 GT, after a few years I moved to the Olympus OM1 with 35 50 and 135 and later to the Leica M4, M6, Canon G9, G10 and Leica M8 with various Leica lenses, the last of which were Elmarit M 24 2.8 Asph, Summicron M 35 2 Asph, Summicron 50 2 and Elmarit 90 2.8. I have never liked the M8 for its well-known characteristics that for me are defects that is, only 10.3 mpx, digital noise already from 400 iso, Aps H sensor and a shot with embarrassing noise. Having to make a trip where the Leica would have been tight for me, I bought a Fuji XE1 changed shortly after with the XE2s and later with the XE3, which I still have, with several Fuji lenses of which I kept three, the 14 2.8 Asph, the classic 18-55 2.8-4 and the 55-200 3.5-4.8. Thanks to the past pandemic that forced us at home for long days and reading reviews to pass the time I convinced myself to sell the M8 and the Elmarit 24 that I did not use to buy, obviously not at par, the Q2. The Q2 with its 28 was exceptional, quite compact, being able to go out with a single camera without the lenses was a great convenience and the files were perfect. Accustomed to using real 35, 50 and 90 I realized that I didn't like cropping in the machine so I decided to make yet another change and leap in quality, I sold the Q2, the Summicron 35 asph and the Summicron 50 for, always not on par, the M10R with Super Elmar 21 3.4 Asph, Apo Summicron 50 2 asph later integrated with a Voigtlander Ultron 28 II and a Nokton 35 1.5, I still have the legendary ninety Elmarit. What can I say about the M10R that has not already been said by those who preceded me, a valuable object built with maniacal materials and care, not very light but small in size and minimalist as I like it, there is everything you need and nothing more, fixed lenses with manual focus which, in addition to being notoriously valuable, they are also small in size precisely because they do not have autofocus. The M10R differs from the M10 mainly for two features, it has an imperceptible shutter, beaten only, personal opinion, from that of the M6 and the 41 mpx sensor which are many but, in my opinion, it has more advantages than disadvantages, if it is true that files over 40 mpx are heavy, it is equally true that for those who love the crop they give greater cropping margins and you can make larger prints, It is also true that in JPEG there is the possibility to choose between three resolutions, 40, 20 and 6 Mpx. In short, what can I say, camera and optics are perfect for the use I usually make of them, and it is not insignificant, weight and dimensions are reduced. It could be my definitive trousseau, even if with my past there is always a: never say never.

leica_21_f3-4super-elmarLeica Super-Elmar-M 21mm f/3.4 ASPH

Pros: Sharpness, no distortion, colors and contrast, size

Cons: Nobody

Opinion: I should repeat myself by listing the same reviews as those who preceded me, I just say that the only flaw that could be found is that it is not very bright but the flaw is limited by the level of high iso performance of the current sensors. I have 4 other lenses, two Leicas and two Voigtlanders, the Super Elmar is not the one I use the most but for me it is the best.

voigtlander_vm28_ultron_iiVoigtlander VM 28 mm f/2.0 Ultron II

Pros: Optical quality, size, weight. aesthetics

Cons: Lens hood to be purchased separately and expensive if original

Opinion: Sharpness from maximum aperture, no distortion and if there is it is imperceptible, minimal vignetting, all in minimal size and weight, practically the same features that I described in my review of the Voigtlander VM Nokton 35 1.5 Asph. In addition to the Voigtlander I have three original Leica lenses, the Super-Elmar M 21 3.4 Asph, the Apo Summicron M 50 2 Asph and the Elmarit M 90 2.8, so I would like to say that they are both a great alternative.

voigtlander_nokton35_f1-5vmVoigtlander VM 35mm f/1.5 Nokton

Pros: Sharpness already from f 1.5, imperceptible distortion and vignetting weight and size.

Cons: Lens hood not included, front cap

Opinion: I trusted the reviews and bought the I version because, being made of aluminum, it is lighter and is matte black like the camera body. Sharpness already from F 1.5, colors, contrast, absence of distortion (the optical scheme is equipped with two lenses with 4 aspherical surfaces) and very little vignetting have favorably impressed me especially for the fact that the lens weighs only 190 g and the dimensions, 53x36 mm, I think are the smallest on the market for a lens with this aperture and quality. The lens hood, which must be purchased separately, in my opinion is a must, both as is well known to avoid light reflections but also to protect the front lens which, given its size, is very exposed and also, again in my opinion, for aesthetic reasons. I did some research and found a very good Tahusa product, even if not exactly cheap, which includes the square metal lens hood similar to that of the Leica Q obviously smaller with its cap and a ring always in black painted metal that serves to cover the unsightly chrome edge when you do not mount the lens hood.
