![]() | Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Pros: Extreme versatility, effective stabilizer, good sharpness at all openings in the center Cons: Chromatic aberrations anytime and anywhere if the contrasts are a bit strong, distortion at 18mm on the edges (recoverable in PP), sharpness drop at the edges Opinion: Used for landscapes and city photography it performs well, especially from 24mm upwards. Too bad that the sharpness tends to get lost at the edges and that it is often coupled with chromatic aberrations, (almost) never very evident but still present and annoying. The images it returns, however, are interesting and give their best, in my experience, between f/8 and f/11. I miss to try the night photography to be able to try to exploit (unfortunately only at 18mm) the f / 3.5 which, all in all, guarantees a certain brightness. sent on July 04, 2023 |
![]() | Canon EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM Pros: flexibility of use, lightness, fluid and precise focus ring Cons: Chromatic aberrations, barely sufficient sharpness Opinion: After some practice with this lens I can say that it is extremely fun to use, and the possibility of going from a focal length of 100mm to 300mm (on FF, otherwise with the conversion factor for Canon APS-C - 1.6x -, we are on an equivalent of 160-480mm) is certainly an advantage, because it is possible to capture any subject at medium-long distance. The intrinsic lightness of the lens (it is almost all made of plastic material) is a merit and a defect at the same time, because it is quite fragile to the touch and the risk is to damage it easily. Risk not too remote since it is a lens certainly designed to be transported and tossed around, certainly not from stalking. What is really a limit, however, shooting handheld, is the poor sharpness of the images, even shooting at times well above the safety ones; which nullifies the sense of such a flexible objective in terms of potential and modularity of use. I reserve the right to try it with a tripod to assess if in fact it is a problem of my dancing hand. Even more serious as a problem but, apparently looking online, typical of this lens, is the very strong chromatic aberration that occurs indiscriminately on all images, at any focal length. All things considered, I would recommend this lens only to those who have no pretensions and are looking for an inexpensive solution to approach the world of telephoto lenses. sent on January 31, 2023 |
![]() | Samyang 500mm f/6.3 MC IF Pros: Magnification, lightness, blur effect Cons: micrometric focus, low light Opinion: I am fond of this lens because it is the first one I started to "play" with, mounted on my father's SLR (which I still use, the EOS 2000D). I love all the features and with a little patience you get used to shooting even in non-optimal light conditions or with uncooperative subjects. The color rendering seems pretty good to me, but in terms of sharpness it is difficult to get a noteworthy shot, probably both because of the intrinsic quality of the lens (certainly not excellent) and because of the high iso + very fast shutter speeds to which you are forced to shoot, especially if you want to avoid shake (or reduce it as much as possible). The best results are certainly obtained by mounting the camera on a tripod but frankly I think you lose the flexibility that such a lens wants to guarantee compared to a traditional telephoto lens. If I had to recommend it? Surely yes, to approach the world of retroreflectors. For those who already know them and want a further piece to add to the kit, I would go on much more noble brands (even if finding well-functioning "vintage" pieces at non-inflated prices is a great challenge ...). Overall, the greatest value of this lens lies in the ability to train those who approach manual focus (because it drives you crazy!), developing the sensitivity necessary for fine adjustments. And then, secondly, but not least, in the possibility it offers to look differently at subjects that perhaps we often take for granted, especially when what is out of focus takes on the nice donut shape! :) sent on January 02, 2023 |
