sigma_100-400dnSigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS C

Pros: Sharpness, size and weight quite contained despite the focal range, really good materials

Cons: Lack of tripod ring to buy separately, sigma quality control that leaves me slightly perplexed, not tropicalized

Opinion: After almost a year of use I got a concrete idea about this lens that was literally a relationship of love and hate. Let's start from what has negatively marked my experience with this perspective; The first specimen I bought (fortunately through amazon) arrived with the electronics totally non-functioning, it did not communicate electronically with the camera body, fortunately I could make the immediate return. The second model, purchased on a well-known Italian shop, left me very perplexed right away for about a month of use. I noticed a fairly marked tendency to knead and total loss of microcontrast and fine detail. Initially I blamed myself because I had never used optics of this type, and maybe I still had to become familiar, especially in the management of air density, choosing ideal days, but despite doing tests even at home the results were still very bad, moreover, comparing myself with various photographers and even here on the forum my experience of use was totally different from what were the feedback released about this lens. So after several attempts I discovered that I had the rear lens "fogged up", I could not even define what it was, it was a very light patina above the rear lens, moist, almost muddy, visible only through the flash of the phone, which covered the rear lens, fortunately externally. It was not easy to see this problem or clean the lens totally, as the rear lens resolved very inside the back of the lens, but with a little patience and with the help of the classic pallets for cleaning the sensor I finally managed to do justice to this lens that is really very surprising in terms of performance. As for this strange fact, I do not know if it is due to sigma or to the shop that sold it to me, the fact is that anyway the lens arrived to me perfectly packed and with all the seals closed, so I strongly doubt that it is due to those who sold me the lens. Another negative point is the lack of the tripod ring that must be purchased individually and costs about € 150 that owner sigma and € 60 that of third parties but that still offer a very good quality, honestly I do not understand this commercial choice, I consider the tripod ring indispensable on a lens of this type. The lack of tropicalization is clearly the compromise that requires this lens, but still has an excellent build quality, the attack is however tropicalized, but the body of the lens is not tropicalized, but I still used it in situations of very high humidity at dawn and did not give me any kind of problem. Its points in favor are definitely the size and sharpness. At the center is really a blade at practically all focal lengths, loses something from 300 to 400mm but it is really about looking for the hair in the egg, and solves with eyes closed the 43mpx of the a7rIII and almost certainly has no problems even on the older sisters from 61mpx. I find it very sharp at all openings (clearly at TA loses a little bit) but the best of itself seems to give it to f11, returns literally sharp files.

tamron_17-28rxdTamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD

Pros: Weight, dimensions, brightness, sharpness in the center, tropicalization

Cons: Focal range, lack of physical keys, substantial loss at the edges especially if mounted on big mp

Opinion: This is the oldest lens I have in my kit, and it accompanies me in my outings since 2019 now. It is an exceptional lens in relation to what it weighs and its size, make it a very valid choice for those who have to carry on their shoulders kg and kg of photographic equipment. It is absolutely the lens that I recommend to combine with others or lenses (eg 24-70 / 24-105) on 24mp. The speech changes slightly on 42mp to rise, I have always used it on 24mp, but since I switched to rIII I found myself holding a lens quite different from the one I knew, the center continues to remain very good, the sides begin to take enough though. Overall compared to what it costs is certainly an excellent purchase, but if we have opportunities it is better to invest something more for something else, not so much for the IQ but so much for the versatility of the lens that is practically nothing. Unlike a 16-35 we cannot afford to go out with only this lens in the backpack.

sony_a7r_iiiSony A7r III

Pros: File quality, dynamic range, weight, size, tropicalization, battery life.

Cons: Operating System Speed

Opinion: After more than a year of use, I am very worried from the day I will have to change camera body. For me this is really the top in terms of balance in terms of mpx and file size, but above all quality. I bought it because the 24mp sensors were starting to tighten but I did not want the 61mpx of the rIV series and so I did this test, coming from a7iii. To date I would say that it is one of the best sensors ever produced by Sony, the files it churns out are perfect, the weight is not exaggerated as a 61mpx file and memory cards, but above all the storage space thanks. The main reason why I bought it as you can well deduce is precisely the perfect compromise of 43mp, which I hope will become a standard for smooth series. Doing exclusively landscape I can not express myself on the focus that for me is enough and advances as it is. The ISO seal for me is more than satisfactory, I shot at 6400iso without too many problems. The tropicalization is very reliable, I took it to extremes both in the mountains and during the storms, from which I literally came out soaked in salt water, and in one of which they were literally hit by a wave in full and the car did not do half a tantrum. Corrosion resistance is equally satisfactory if carefully cleaned after the most "extreme" sessions. As far as I'm concerned, it's the perfect camera for landscaping, as it has all the squares you look for in landscape photography, rows of excellent quality, dynamic range, but above all reliability both in terms of performance but above all in terms of resistance. The only cons is the operating speed. Often the files are in bufering for several seconds, especially if you go to bursts, even with high-performance memories. But what makes me turn up my nose is the slowness in the ignition, a few seconds elapse, and it could happen that in some unexpected situations you lose the shot. In addition, the message "working in NTSC" if they could also keep it for them since it loses additional seconds at the power on, it would be solved using the PAL but I need to keep the machine in NTSC.

sony_fe14_f1-8gmSony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM

Pros: Incredible sharpness already at TA, build quality, weight, size, autofocus, aperture ring

Cons: Impossibility to mount screw filters (???), Not having it

Opinion: I've been using it for a few weeks and I put it under pressure, used both day and night. Let's start with the cons: The impossibility of mounting screw filters I put it as a big question mark for the simple fact that when it comes to these focal ranges generally on all lenses it is impossible to mount screw filters. Unfortunately, the fixed hood, for obvious reasons given the rounded front element, implies the use of 150mm holders with specific adapters and the cost is substantial. Pros: Incredible sharpness, I was incredulous when I found super sharp files from side to side already from TA, if you really want to "enjoy" just go between f5.6 and f8, at f8 you reach the total peak, at f11 the diffraction begins to be felt but still remains very sharp and even at f16 despite the diffraction still returns sharp files, I shot quietly in situations where I needed the maximum of the PDC without doing focus stack. In terms of materials I don't think there is any need to talk about it, it is a GM lens, it needs no introduction. Weight and size: since I started photographing a little more seriously, 14mm have always been a problem for me, despite being a focal range that I really like, and if a few years ago someone had told me that sooner or later I could have a 14mm f1.8 that weighs 460g and with this size I would have laughed in his face. This is an engineering masterpiece made in Sony. The only competitor is the Sigma 14mm f1.8 which weighs almost 3 times as much and twice as long. Autofocus: I never thought of using 14mm autofocus, but instead I had to change my mind. In essence it is truly an exceptional lens, it manages to have all the qualities that are sought in a single perspective in landscape photography; Sharpness from side to side, versatility, amazing rows already at TA for night shots, light, compact, tropicalized, do I need to add more?

sony_fe24-105_f4ossSony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS

Pros: Sharpness in center, focal range, construction, stars, focus

Cons: chromatic aberations, cost, not the top for flares, weight, slightly loses at the edges

Opinion: It is a beautiful piece of glass, offers versatility and good sharpness all with a very good focal range that makes it a really good choice for landscape photography. Unfortunately the price, beyond the materials and performance in AF that are exceptional, I can not justify it. The biggest problem in my opinion are the chromatic aberrations, they are really many and intrusive, even in PP they become difficult to remove, especially in parts with a lot of difference in dynamic range, at the edges, something that I have never seen so intrusive in any other lens, even on lenses literally bottle bottoms. However, if you do not shoot in situations of strong against light the problem fades a lot. Another problem encountered is the flare tightness, unfortunately it does not hold them very well, and they are very intrusive. For everything else it is a fantastic lens, it has an incredible sharpness, perhaps it loses a little bit at the extremes both on the short side and on the long side, but still nothing disabling and nothing that you notice assuming that you do not go to 200%. At the edges it loses a little, but in the end which optics does not lose something at the edges? Overall it is an excellent all-rounder, and with such a focal excursion I do not think you can expect much better, it is a lens to keep always attached to the camera body, and its work does it well but with some small compromise that can be remedied.

samyang_14Samyang 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC Aspherical

Pros: Price, sharpness already from f4,wide-field astronomy

Cons: Distortion, inability to mount circular screw filters, some models do not come out of the factory just as they should ,fixed plastic lamp in my opinion not too resistant, size for sony E

Opinion: Used for more than one harvest, I've tested it in a variety of situations including, mountain, astronomy, urban night wildscape nights, there's little to say for what it costs offers a truly appreciable snap experience. I immediately want to start from a very large defect that afflicts this lens, or rather some lenses, unfortunately one of the most well-known problems of the samyang 14mm not AF is just the dial of the focus, unfortunately some models come out of the factory with the dislodle, therefore maybe you are on the focus at 3m but at the actual maybe you are at 7m this makes for obvious reasons difficult if not impossible to use hyperfocale. There is a method to fix this problem more tough easy, removing the rubber above the dial and unscrewing a small screw we can bring back at the end of the race the dial, but honestly I do not think that this is a real solution, because anyway from the feeling that I had the focus were not reliable for hyperfocal, and the infinity was well beyond the infinite symbol. You understand that for a totally manual lens, not having a reliable distance scale is not one of the most practical and comfortable things especially since it is a lens that requires hyperfocal, since for its opening you will still take portions of background very close to you. Reluctantly I had to return it and decided to move to a totally different perspective. For everything else for what it offers and for what are performance I do not think in the FF market there is anything better on this focal renge in relation to quality and price. The best of itself gives it on the new summer moon nights, to photograph the milky way, it is really formidable, it seems made for this very reason, manages to perfectly pull out the shades of the core, beautiful vivid and appreciable,it is very sharp, and if you are equipped with astro tracker just close to f4 and enjoy, at this opening the COMA and the astigmatism are greatly reduced and you buy a good sharpness even at the edges. I mentioned the distortion in the cons of the lens, but honestly I think that if you do not want the distortion you do not take a 14mm regardless, I personally appreciate the wide-angle distortion, and I hate to have to fix it perfectly on PS because at the end of correction goes from if that we will have a very croppathed file and if I photograph at 14mm it is precisely because the angle of the field is what I like and what I wanted, if I wanted a less pushed corner of the field I would take a 20 or a 24mm. The lampshade for obvious reasons is fixed, but honestly I do not understand why put a fixed plastic lampshade of quite dubious quality, you have to be very careful not to break it otherwise you lose the ability to plug the lens depending on how it breaks, you lose the protection it offers to the spherical lens in front and of course you take the worst side reflections. Small precisely for the sony version are the dimensions, practically we have the size of the lens canon/nikon version with the addition of an adapter embedded in the lens, which makes it several centimeters longer and even a little more weighted.
