sony_a7Sony A7

Pros: Comparable weight to a 4/3 and workability of Raw files

Cons: High ISO sealing, battery life, obnoxious logo at power-up

Opinion: I state that I also own a D610 and an A7III, but now this A7 has accompanied me for 6 years on almost all mountain excursions, especially the longer ones and with landscape intent. For my use I only give a score of 9 and not 10 because in high ISO tightness it does not stand comparison with my old and still loved NikD610, and therefore I consider single-shot night photography its Achilles heel. But for daytime landscape photos on long hikes I find it phenomenal. Its lightness is incredible, a real FF with the weight of a 4/3, which returns raw with a surprising workability (obviously remaining really low with the ISO), in terms of shadow recovery and in terms of dynamic range, it doesn't make me miss the other camera bodies in the backpack. To all this if I add the really low purchase price at which I found it since it had just been discontinued.... for me, indispensable. For me the last real drawback, the ridiculous battery life, it is practically a must to have a spare .

sigma_150-600cSigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM C

Pros: Weight, focal range and cost

Cons: All the cons of zooms, the particular sharpness at maximum focal length

Opinion: I state that it was mainly used for fauna in excursions, and that previously I used the Nikon 300 F4 af and with 1.7 teleconverter (replaced because it was too dark with 1.7) and the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 (replaced just out of warranty because it rarely fizzed). The purchase was a bit forced years ago given the replacement of the Nikon and given the more favorable price (about 400E less in the store than the Nikon) In the end it turned out to be a pleasant surprise for me, because in these years of use it has never made me regret the previous Nikon 200/500. Thanks to its lightness (almost 4 ounces less) I found it much more comfortable in handheld use and the minimum focal length of 150mm allowed me some occasional "landscape" shots. At 600mm in some shots it seemed a bit soft, but already going down to 550/500mm I always found it well defined, for what you can expect from a zoom. I can't comment on the AF, as it has always been used with a D610.

nikon_24-120vr_f4Nikon AF-S 24-120mm f/4 G ED VR

Pros: Versatility, weight / bulk, good sharpness

Cons: Vignetting, suffers in backlight (flare), distortion at 24mm

Opinion: I have owned it for about six months, really comfortable and versatile in all situations. X who like me has a purely landscaped approach I can say that f4 compared to a f2.8 of a 24-70 does not make a difference, but those 50mm of focal length in most certainly come back useful (even if at 120mm loses a bit 'in the surrender). In addition, its weight and compactness make it a good companion in the medium / long excursions in the mountains. Coming from fixed lenses like 20mm and 28mm, of course I can say, that is not to be compared with that type of optics, as sharpness, lack of distortion and lack of flare are not comparable. I call it a good lens for hiker / landscape artist, for those looking for a versatile lens to put in the backpack (without having to load the backpack with too many lenses) not too heavy and at the same time give back quality images.

nikon_d610Nikon D610

Pros: ISO seal, shade / light recovery, dynamic range, second slot

Cons: Af with little light, Af point layout, ISO button

Opinion: I have been happy about the D610 for about 2 years, premising that it is used exclusively for landscape, night and rarely naturalistic photos, this machine performs its job very well. RnTowing from the D7100 the first thing that stunned me was the workability of the files, I would define the comparison almost embarrassing, compared to an incredible recovery shadows / lights. In the night photos I found a good resistance to ISO, but I think it is a gamble to exceed I 4000 ISO (subjective opinion cmq believe). The only real weak point that I found is the AF a bit 'undecided with poor lighting conditions. The AF points are perhaps distributed a bit 'too much in the central area and perhaps for those who treat a kind of very dynamic photography can be a limit. Too bad for the ISO button in an awkward position and not attributable to other programmable keys. In conclusion, thanks to the experience with this machine in the landscape field, I would definitely recommend it to those coming from the 3000, 5000 and 7000 series.

samyang_14Samyang 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC Aspherical

Pros: Price, weight, dimensions, sharpness and maf

Cons: Fixed hood, filter assembly

Opinion: I have been very satisfied with this lens for about 2 years, always mounted on D610, used only for landscape and night photography. Nice the sunburst that is obtained, holds well against the light. Returns crisp images and distortion is easily corrected in PP. I think the manual focus is its strong point in night photography, where a wider range of adjustment (compared to auto focus lenses) facilitates the correct focus to infinity. Weight and compactness make this lens a comfortable companion on excursions.
