canon_180_macroCanon EF 180mm f/3.5 L Macro USM

Pros: Robustness, sharpness, contrast, compatibility with Canon Extender.

Cons: Price, considering the year of production.

Opinion: Taken new a few years to replace a SIGMA 180 f 3.5, the transition was due to one of my whim to have "original Canon L series" Optics. Build quality and robustness are the first thing you notice in taking it in your hand. The yield in terms of quality is very good, (it was no less even the Sigma actually according to me, as well as the Tamron, you know that the macros are all very good), has a fantastic blurred and a really exceptional color rendition. The yield in my opinion is good already at full aperture but it gains further closing, since the greater use in macro is done at closed diaphragms. Although not tropicalized, it is almost as if it were, no problem in the mornings at dawn in the middle of the dew or under the drizzle. It is not a feather, but the tonnage and the materials of the body impose it. Another positive note (this is also the reason why the change from Sigma) the compatibility with the original Canon duplicators, with 2x III maintains a very good quality allowing a greater magnification or greater distance from the most Can Dodge. It ' an outdated optics and perhaps a new version with IS would not spoil for some use more generic freehand even if its use is done almost exclusively on tripod. Only negative, in my opinion, the price considering that it is in production D over 20 years!

canon_1d4Canon 1D Mark IV

Pros: sturdiness, tropicalization, battery life, ergonomics.

Cons: Considering the age nobody, looking for the fur in the egg, the shot a bit noisy.

Opinion: Socket used as a body to be associated with the 500 F4 to replace 7d and 1d Mk3, I was hooked. It does not have a newer and more customizable AF module like the most modern Canon SLR cameras, such as 7d Mk2 or 5d Mk3/MkIV (the 1DX I have not tried), but once documented and understood the settings, does not disappoint. The "only" 16 megapixels are more than enough to print good magnifications and also allow a slight crop to fix the shot if necessary. The ISO hold is not bad at all and up to 6400 are well salvable. With 500 F4 is and 2x series III, while slowing down considerably the AF can give unexpected details if the subject occupies a good part of the frame. With 1.4 series III the AF holds quite well even with subjects on the fly. The body well balances with the Supertele, a real tank. Battery life is remarkable: 1200-1500 shots before relocharging. Then we remember the APS-H factor 1.3 x that does not fail for photographic hunting. The ergonomics are great for my hand. The shot is a little noisy, say you feel, especially if you are in the cabin with susceptible species, but acceptable. With the current prices in the used market and sometimes even with "few clicks" for a Series 1, it is a bargain not to get away. Difficult then go back, a series 1 is a series 1 even if discontinued...

canon_500_f4isCanon EF 500mm f/4 L IS USM

Pros: Full-aperture yield, image quality, "portability" for the focal length.

Cons: Uncomfortable the front cap, outside the CPS.

Opinion: I got it used on the occasion by a friend about three years ago, practically new. It was my dream in the drawer. It was love at first sight, exceptional, first associated with a 7d where however the coupled was unbalanced, I then took a used 1d mk4 and became the perfect match. Personally I find it usabilissimo freehand, probably it is the limit as focal length / brightness / freehand use, it is not very light of course, but there sta.rnHa very good quality already at full aperture, fast in focus. The only drawback is the front lens cover, uncomfortable to remove, especially when stored in the backpack, I do not digest it right. Furthermore. is out of the list of CPS ... rnAssociato to 1.4 III still maintains a good quality, I often use it freehand and can manage to hook the bird avifauna quite well on the fly and the stabilizer all in all behaves well, I often run shots with little light and relatively short time baces and many were saved.rnWith the 2x II there was a collapse in quality and af almost unusable. Turned to 2x I noticed a quality improvement and all in all the yield is good if the subject occupies a good part of the frame. For shots on the fly better to forget, the limit is 1.4x.
