Narra infatti la leggenda che, nella notte dei tempi, un giovane eremita albergava da queste parti in una misera e fredda capanna. Trascorreva le giornate pregando e lodando il Signore per le gioie che la Natura gli donava. Ovviamente, meno contento era il Diavolo che, a dire il vero con poca fantasia, ideò di presentarsi al pio ragazzo sotto le vesti (si fa per dire, perché probabilmente non ne aveva) di una conturbante fanciulla. Niente da fare, nulla poteva distogliere l'eremita dai suoi puri pensieri. Visto che il cocciuto Diavolo non se ne voleva andare (e la "carne" del giovane stava per cedere), quest'ultimo pensò bene di mostrargli il crocifisso regalatogli dalla madre. A quella vista, l'ammagliante giovinetta riprese le orribili fattezze del Maligno. Costui, schiumante di rabbia e con ampi salti (i "Salti del Diavolo"), sferrando pure unghiate poderose (le "striature verticali"), se ne ritornò da dove era venuto (presumo dall'Inferno). Per un po' rimase sospeso nell'aria un acre odore di zolfo, ma il pericolo era scongiurato
