Melaleuca Cuticularis , albero della famiglia del mirto, Myrtaceae , originario dell'Australia sud occidentale . I giardini botanici Hanbury sorgono sul promontorio della Mortola nel comune di Ventimiglia in provincia di Imperia a pochi chilometri dal confine francese . Il parco della villa rappresenta uno dei giardini di acclimatazione più famosi d' Europa e del bacino del Mediterraneo . I giardini furono realizzati a partire dal 1867 grazie alla passione del viaggiatore inglese sir Thomas Hanbury che , dopo aver fatto fortuna come esportatore di tè a Shanghai , decise di stabilirsi sulla costa ligure ed acquistò dapprima il palazzo dei marchesi Orengo di Ventimiglia e successivamente i terreni circostanti su cui volle realizzare un giardino con specie botaniche raccolte in ogni parte del mondo . Alla sua morte avvenuta nel 1907 il figlio Cecil e la nuora Lady Dorothy portarono avanti l'opera di sir Thomas . Nel 1960 lo stato italiano acquistò dagli eredi il complesso la cui gestione nel 1987 venne affidata all'Università degli Studi di Genova . I giardini , oltre a conservare una notevole collezione botanica , sono ingentiliti da fontane , statue ed altri elementi architettonici . Una delle fontane più famose è la fontana del Drago che prende il nome dalla presenza al suo centro di un bronzo giapponese che Sir Tomas Hanbury acquistò da un antiquario a Kyoto nel 1893 ; la fontana è antistante una nicchia che ospita una statua di schiava di scuola canoviana . Fra gli elementi architettonici più importanti c'è il Mausoleo Moresco in cui sono tumulate le ceneri di Sir Thomas Hanbury e della moglie e il Tempietto Quattro Stagioni in cui sono tumulate le ceneri di Lady Dorothy . #Giardini
