Capolavoro iconico della Galleria, il ritratto di Paolina Borghese è stato commissionato dal principe Camillo Borghese a Antonio Canova nel 1804 e fu terminato nel 1808. Camillo Borghese aveva sposato Paolina Bonaparte, la bella e vivace sorella di Napoleone, nel 1803 a Parigi. Paolina aveva 23 anni ed era vedova del generale Leclerc, morto di una malattia tropicale a Santo Domingo dove Napoleone lo aveva spedito insieme alla moglie, ufficialmente per sedare una rivolta indigena, ma in realtà per soffocare lo scandalo provocato a Parigi dalla condotta libertina di Paolina. Dopo le nozze si trasferirono a Roma a Palazzo Borghese, dove Paolina poté riprendere la vita di sfarzo e divertimenti che tanto amava. Sebbene il matrimonio non fosse particolarmente felice, Camillo convocò il Canova, l'artista più illustre del momento per il ritratto della bellissima moglie. Numerosi furono i pettegolezzi che fiorirono circa la nudità della scultura e l'eventualità che la principessa avesse posato svestita per l'artista. Paolina è rappresentata come Venere, vincitrice del giudizio di Paride, come ci indica la mela che tiene nella mano: la più bella fra le dee. Canova ha espresso in quest'opera altissima una summa della propria cultura figurativa e ne ha fatto un'icona del proprio singolare neoclassicismo. La posa della principessa, distesa su un'elegante “agrippina”– rimanda al repertorio classico,; ma anche alla tradizione della pittura veneta del Cinquecento, alle Veneri tizianesche.
