La Lasiocampa quercus è una falena della famiglia Lasiocampidae, compie una sola generazione all'anno e il suo ciclo vitale inizia in autunno, il periodo degli accoppiamenti. I maschi rintracciano le femmine da lunghe distanze riconoscendo i feromoni da esse prodotti. Gli accoppiamenti avvengono al tramonto e durano circa mezz'ora, i maschi possono accoppiarsi più volte fino all'arrivo del buio. Nelle ore successive le femmine iniziano a deporre le uova, a differenza di altre farfalle e falene, non le attaccano alle piante nutrici ma le lasciano cadere nel terreno dove si sparpagliano rotolando grazie alla loro forma sferica. Il periodo di incubazione è di circa 2 settimane, i piccoli bruchi appena nati sono lunghi pochi millimetri, le uova spesso sono lontane dalle piante nutrici e i bruchi devono camminare molto prima di poter mangiare. È una specie polifaga, si nutre di foglie di alberi e arbusti: Edera, Rovo, Ribes, Ligustro, betulla, Salice, Pioppo, pruno e Melo. Crescono molto lentamente e in tutta la loro vita effettuano 4 mute, durante l'inverno restano fermi tra la vegetazione per non consumare troppe energie, nei giorni miti vanno alla ricerca di cibo solo nelle ore più soleggiate. In primavera ritornano in attività, effettuano l'ultima muta e vanno in esplorazione alla ricerca di un luogo sicuro per preparare il bozzolo, simile ad una ghianda e di colore marrone. La metamorfosi dura circa 2 o 3 mesi e le falene nascono all'inizio dell'autunno. Il dimorfismo sessuale è molto evidente, le femmine sono di colore giallo chiaro e i maschi marrone. La spirotromba è poco sviluppata e non riescono a nutrirsi, vivono quindi solo una settimana. Questa specie è molto rara dalle mie parti, la scorsa primavera tra aprile e maggio ho allevato 10 bruchi nutrendoli con foglie di pruno e melo. Tutti hanno completato correttamente la metamorfosi e ora sono in attesa degli sfarfallamenti per fotografare le falene. Questo è il primo bruco che ho trovato, a metà aprile; stava mangiando le foglie tra i rami di un pruno in questa particolare posizione. Per fotografarlo mi sono addentrato tra i rami e sono riuscito a scattare delle macro ambientate. Da qualche giorno ho creato un profilo instagram, anche se in passato ho avuto una brutta esperienza ho deciso di riprovarci.
