Piazza San Fedele. Monumento ad Alessandro Manzoni, opera dello scultore Francesco Barzaghi (1839-1892), inaugurato il 22 maggio 1883, esattamente un decennio dopo la morte del grande scrittore. «Don Lisander» era come il Manzoni preferiva essere nominato, e pare che si irritasse quando lo chiamavano «Conte Manzoni» o peggio «Signor Conte», con tanto di titolo nobiliare. Io ho un debole per questa statua, che non trovo per niente retorica e agiografica. «Don Lisander» è qui ritratto con un'aria disincantata e malinconica, con un abbigliamento “da tutti i giorni”, che oggi definiremmo “informale”. Francesco Barzaghi era un artista molto rinomato all'epoca, nonché professore alla cattedra di scultura dell'Accademia di Brera; quindi probabilmente introdotto al “milieu” intellettuale milanese, e non escludo che avesse conosciuto personalmente il Manzoni. A sinistra si intravede la facciata di Palazzo Marino, a destra quella della chiesa di San Fedele, che Manzoni frequentava regolarmente, posta a circa cento metri dal suo palazzo in Via Morone. Fu sui gradini di questa chiesa che il 6 gennaio del 1873 scivolò, forse per via del ghiaccio, battendo la testa. Aveva 88 anni e ne derivò una meningite che lo condusse alla morte il maggio seguente. Riguardo alla collocazione del monumento, c'era anche la proposta alternativa di porlo davanti al suo palazzo, ma alla fine venne collocato in questa piazza.
