A Calascio lo conoscono come Mimì. E' uno degli ultimi pastori di queste terre. Parla poco, e quel poco è in un dialetto a me quasi incomprensibile. Prossimo agli ottanta, ogni giorno porta le sue pecore sui pascoli che sovrastano questo piccolo Paese ai piedi del Gran Sasso. Dicono che conosca le sue bestie una ad una e le sappia riconoscere con inspiegabile esattezza. Una mattina di luglio lo raggiungo nella stalla mentre si accinge alla mungitura. Per entrare cammino tra i suoi magnifici cani da pastore, il cui sguardo non cessa di sorvegliarmi. Una femmina anziana, madre di alcuni dei maschi che oggi guidano il branco, è stesa in un angolo.
