La Deilephila elpenor è un lepidottero della famiglia Sphingidae. Il suo ciclo vitale inizia in primavera, quando la temperatura è favorevole, le falene sfarfallano dopo aver trascorso tutto l'inverno nella crisalide. Il giorno dopo l'accoppiamento, la femmina depone le uova una ad una sotto le foglie delle piante nutrici, di solito varie specie di vite. Sono ricoperte da una sostanza appiccicosa e rimangono attaccate alle foglie, inizialmente sono verdi ma durante lo sviluppo diventano gialle. Dopo circa 15 giorni avviene la schiusa e i piccoli bruchi, che misurano pochi millimetri, iniziano subito a nutrirsi. Appena nati sono tutti verdi ma dopo la seconda muta la colorazione può cambiare e diventare marrone, gli esemplari marroni mangiano solo di notte nascondendosi nel buio mentre quelli verdi si mimetizzano tra la vegetazione e si nutrono anche di giorno. Durante la crescita anche il loro aspetto cambia: il primo e il secondo segmento addominale, che si trovano dietro la testa, aumentano le dimensioni e compaiono le quattro macchie scure a forma di occhi che caratterizzano questa specie. Il loro comportamento difensivo è molto particolare. Come altre specie della famiglia Sphingidae, fin dalla nascita hanno nella parte posteriore del corpo un corno di colore nero per simulare una seconda testa con lo scopo confondere i predatori. Inoltre quando sono infastiditi, ritraggono la testa nell'addome e gonfiano i falsi occhi, diventando simili ad un piccolo serpente. Diventano adulti in un mese arrivando anche ad 8 cm di lunghezza, poi abbandonano le piante nutrici e camminano nel terreno alla ricerca di un luogo adatto dove compiere la metamorfosi. Scavano un cunicolo nel terreno fino a 15 cm di profondità e costruiscono una celletta in cui, dopo 2 giorni, si trasformano in crisalide. La crisalide è marrone chiaro con delle striature scure, misura circa 40mm. Questa specie compie due generazioni all'anno, la prima compie la metamorfosi in circa 2 settimane e la seconda trascorrerà l'inverno nella crisalide fino alla primavera successiva. La farfalla ha abitudini notturne e può essere chiamata falena, la incontro raramente durante le mie esplorazioni mentre vola per nutrirsi di nettare. Non si posa sui fiori, ma raccoglie il nettare in volo con la sua lunga spirotromba. Questa attività è molto stancante per lei, che deve sempre battere le ali per rimanere ferma vicino al fiore per il tempo necessario. Gli occhi sono molto sviluppati e le consentono un'ottima visione notturna, il corpo è ricoperto da corti peli rosa con macchie e striature gialle o marrone chiaro; le femmine sono più grandi dei maschi e hanno l'addome più arrotondato. Qualche giorno fa ho visto questa specie volare molto velocemente tra i fiori notturni Quando mi sono avvicinato con la luce led si è posata su un rametto, sono riuscito a farla salire sulla mia mano e a fotografarla su questo tronco d'ulivo. Negli ultimi giorni sto avendo molte difficoltà a fotografare, gli animali sono molto agitati a causa del caldo e c'è sempre un vento più o meno forte che mi crea molti problemi. Quando non sono collaborativi preferisco lasciarli in pace e allontanarmi, anche se tutte le ore passate ad esplorare non hanno portato a nessun risultato, dopotutto non sono un collezionista di immagini. Magari qualcun altro li ucciderebbe, o li metterebbe in freezer come mi è capitato di leggere in passato proprio su questo forum... Fotografare e preservare la natura richiede molta fatica, inoltre per esplorare ogni notte con due zaini e 5 fauna box serve una certa determinazione. Il tempo per guadare e pubblicare le foto è molto poco, dovrò aspettare l'inverno per poterlo fare con calma e rivivere questi indimenticabili momenti.
