Continuano senza sosta le mie esplorazioni notturne, sto osservando tante specie e piano piano le mostrerò anche a voi. Le notti sono molto umide con un costante vento e gli animali hanno ripreso le attività dopo due settimane di pioggia. Questa vespa regina ha trascorso la notte su un ramo di melo, mi sono avvicinato lentamente e sono riuscito a fotografarla da vicino senza spaventarla. La Vespula germanica è un imenottero appartenente alla famiglia delle Vespidae. Il ciclo vitale di questa specie inizia in primavera, quando la regina, dopo aver trascorso il freddo inverno nascosta in buchi nei tronchi o nel terreno, va alla ricerca di un posto adatto per costruire il nido. Di solito lo prepara nel terreno in tane abbandonate da altri animali, oppure nei tronchi degli alberi. É formato da piccole celle, una vicina all'altra, costruite con piccoli pezzi di legno che impastati con la sua saliva formano un materiale modellabile; ho osservato molte volte le vespe raccogliere il legno con le loro mandibole. Il nido è ricoperto da un involucro impermeabile che lo protegge dai pericoli. All'interno di ogni cella la regina depone un uovo, dal quale nascerà una vespa operaia della nuova colonia. La vita della vespa è suddivisa in varie fasi: dall'uovo nasce una larva che si nutre di insetti, quando è cresciuta abbastanza compie la metamorfosi nella sua cella e diventa adulta, pronta a volare e a svolgere il suo compito all'interno del nido. Gli adulti mangiano nettare, melata e frutta; inoltre hanno l'importante compito di catturare e portare nel nido piccoli insetti per nutrire le larve. All'inizio il nido è molto piccolo e la regina, fino alla nascita delle prime operaie, deve ingrandirlo, difenderlo e procurare il cibo per le larve; questi compiti spetteranno alle vespe operaie una volta adulte. Per tutta l'estate le operaie ingrandiscono il nido costruendo nuove celle e consentendo alla regina di deporre più uova, da cui nasceranno altre operaie. A fine estate la regina ormai anziana, prima di morire depone le ultime uova, da cui nasceranno altre regine ed esemplari maschi. Intanto anche le operaie stanno morendo e quelle più giovani sono le uniche rimaste, devono proteggere e nutrire le regine e i maschi per consentirgli di accoppiarsi. Le vespe possono vivere fino a 4 mesi, la regina vive qualche settimana in più per poter deporre tutte le uova. Tanti sono i predatori e i pericoli che possono incontrare quando sono fuori dal nido, possono essere mangiate dagli uccelli e dalle mantidi, possono rimanere bloccate in una ragnatela oppure essere catturate da un ragno nascosto tra i fiori. In autunno i maschi e le regine sono pronti per l'accoppiamento, volano via dal nido e si incontrano con gli esemplari di altre famiglie. Dopo l'accoppiamento il maschio muore e la regina va alla ricerca di un posto sicuro dove trascorrere l'inverno, in attesa della primavera per ricominciare il ciclo. Come tutti gli animali, anche le vespe, insieme alle api, svolgono importantissimi compiti per l'equilibrio dell'ecosistema.
