Era giugno, non pioveva da settimane e l'ambiente era molto secco, per fortuna di notte c'era un po' di umidità che dava sollievo alle piante e agli animali. Come al solito ero in esplorazione nel mio terreno quando vidi questo bellissimo ragno, ben mimetizzato tra le foglie di limone. Fu molto collaborativo e mi consentì di scattargli alcune foto. L'Olios argelasius, chiamato anche ragno cacciatore, è una specie appartenente alla famiglia Sparassidae. Questi ragni hanno 8 lunghe zampe che gli consentono di muoversi e arrampicarsi molto velocemente; le prime 4 si estendono in avanti e sono più lunghe delle altre. Sulle zampe sono posizionati i tricobotri, dei particolari peli sensori di colore nero o marrone che gli consentono di percepire ogni movimento nel terreno, in questo modo possono sentire molto bene le prede e avvertire eventuali pericoli. Anche gli occhi sono 8, posizionati frontalmente in due file da 4. Tutto il corpo è ricoperto da una corta peluria, la testa e il torace sono arancioni e l'addome è giallo scuro con delle macchie marroni più o meno evidenti; anche le zampe sono arancioni, con la punta marrone. Hanno abitudini notturne, vivono nel sottobosco e nelle zone umide. Le femmine costruiscono la tana scavando piccoli buchi nel terreno tra l'erba e le cortecce degli alberi, dove passano la maggior parte delle ore diurne. Preparare la tana è faticoso, quindi spesso si adattano sfruttando i buchi nei tronchi oppure piccole tane abbandonate da altri animali. I maschi non dovendo proteggere e crescere i piccoli non costruiscono una tana, di notte si spostano continuamente e di giorno si nascondono tra la vegetazione. La femmina, come l'esemplare della foto, si riconosce dalle dimensioni maggiori e dall'addome più grande e arrotondato. Viene chiamato ragno cacciatore perché non costruisce la ragnatela, ma tende agguati alle sue prede; mangiano tante specie di insetti, anche quelli di grandi dimensioni come gli ortotteri. Appena arriva la notte escono dalle tane e si nascondono nel terreno, tra l'erba o sui rami degli alberi. Quando, grazie ai tricobotri, sentono la presenza di una preda nelle vicinanze, la inseguono e la catturano con i loro forti cheliceri; la mordono iniettandole del veleno e poi la trattengono in attesa che faccia effetto per poterla mangiare con calma. In primavera e per tutta l'estate avviene la stagione riproduttiva, le femmine emettono i feromoni, che aiutano i maschi a trovarle. Il rituale di corteggiamento è molto particolare: il maschio muove le zampe anteriori e batte sul terreno i pedipalpi. Questo particolare rituale permette alla femmina di riconoscere il maschio come suo simile e non come preda. La femmina depone, dopo circa 20 giorni, più di 100 uova in una sacca ovale da lei costruita, chiamata ovisacco. Il periodo di incubazione varia con le condizioni climatiche, di solito è necessario circa 1 mese. Per circa due settimane porta con sé l'ovisacco tenendolo con i cheliceri, quindi non può cacciare e non si nutre. Poi lo attacca alla vegetazione e crea un nido protetto tessendo intorno ad esso una tela grande alcuni centimetri, resta di guardia tutto il tempo per sorvegliare lo sviluppo allontanandosi raramente solo per cacciare. Quando i piccoli nasceranno, la madre li terrà con sé fino a quando, dopo diverse mute, non saranno abbastanza cresciuti. Se non incontrano pericoli, possono vivere fino a due anni. Il ragno cacciatore è molto timido e se disturbato cerca sempre di scappare, tuttavia se la fuga non è possibile può anche mordere con i suoi forti cheliceri. Le femmine per difendere le uova e i piccoli possono essere particolarmente aggressive. Il suo morso non causa danni all'uomo, al massimo un po' di dolore ai più delicati; piuttosto invece di prendersela con gli animali, si deve imparare a vivere la natura come ospiti e a preservare l'ecosistema.

During night explorations I like to walk slowly for miles freehand to photograph these small animals.
Only rarely do I stop and prepare all the equipment with tripods, which I prefer to do at sunrise or sunset.
Many times I leave all the equipment and slip into narrow and uncomfortable environments, as in this case.
The spider was well hidden in the branches of a lemon plant. To photograph it I slowly went into space and positioned the lens with the flashes between two branches to have it within range. The composition was therefore almost obligatory, I could only choose whether to stay a little further to the right or more to the left. As I often do, I chose to stay more to the right.
Just in these days I found other spiders of this species :-)
